“Here Is A Toy So He Won’t Forget Me”: Boy Leaves His Helpless Puppy At A Shelter So His Dad Can’t Beat It

Sadly, the world is not always fun and bright. Sometimes hard decisions have to be made, even if they break your heart. A few days ago, this 12-year-old boy had to make one just like that.

On February 13th, a shelter called Xollin found an adorable puppy at their doorstep with a letter from a boy. The shelter said on their Facebook page: “Someone left this dog at the door of the shelter, inside a box, with a plush toy and a note. The note was written by a kid and he explained his dad was always beating the dog and was planning to sell him. So, in such a state of despair, he left the dog here to save him.”

After they shared this story, people from all over the world wanted to help, donate, and adopt the puppy.

The shelter’s first priority was to check the health of the puppy.

“We need to take the dog to the vet so he can check his tail, which apparently is fractured. We also need to remove parasites and get him a check-up. This means more expenses and work for us, but luckily the dog will be safe.”

They found out the 12-year-old boy named Andrés was from México state. Not much more information is known about him.

The letter says: “My name is Andrés and I’m 12 years old. My mom and I decided to leave him to you. All of this is behind my dad’s back, because he was thinking of selling him. But he is always beating and kicking the dog. Once he kicked him so hard that his little tail got injured. I hope you can help him and take care of him. Here is a plush toy so he won’t forget me.”

The shelter named the dog Rene. They are looking for the right family for the puppy—they have many choices because they got over 300 messages with people wanting to adopt this beautiful pup.

The shelter also mentioned that they wish more people would adopt animals, not only when they go viral. There are millions of abused animals in the world and they all need love and a happy family.

“If you all opened your heart and your home to all and not only to this dog, all our animals in the shelter would have been already adopted twice. Thanks to the few people who came to the shelter offering their help to protect other animals suffering abuse or being abandoned in our district and surroundings.”

What do you think about this story? Did the boy and his mother do the right thing? Let us know in the comments.

Please consider adopting an animal or donating some money to a shelter. Every penny counts!

Great that the dog is now safe, however the shelter, before making this go viral (or even sharing it publicly at all) should have really thought about the safety of the mom and boy. If the father sees this, and recognises the dog and the realises then story is about him and his own family it will have terrible consequences. The shelter really should have thought a bit more about the circumstances and not so much about online attention.

Well, let's hope the dad doesn't own a phone or a PC and is illiterate and blind. This tragedy going viral will cost that boy and his mother a beating in the best case and death in the worst case....

IIRC, the laws in Mexico lag behind even our poor excuse for abuse laws, both for people and for animals. Like in the States, it's slowly changing, but the emphasis seems to be on 'slowly'. (It's been a long time since I was there...)

I'm not sure that's a pitt. If it's still a puppy..it looks like a Cane Corso. That's a very valuable dog ($1800-$3000.) They get to be the size of a Bull Mastiff, and they are loving snooze buddies. Someone is going to get a great dog, but I suggest sending him to a home that's far away from the original area because, as rare as those dogs are, the father may spot someone with the dog and do whatever it takes to get the dog back. Better to have it far away from the original owner as possible.

I think they should have dumped the dad instead, I wouldn't be surprised if the dad beats on the mom and boy as well. I hope that puppy gets the home he deserves and one day that boy can get a new puppy to love.

That is a really wonderful and brave thing to do because even at 12 years old the boy understood his fathers brutality and could not allow it. I just hope son and mother are safe after this. The father is one of those who will take it out on a human when he cannot hurt an animal, one very sick man. I hope he is charged before he does any more damage. Such a beautiful pup will surely find a loving home.

For goodness sake. Now, because websites like this one wanted clicks, a boy and his mother could be in serious danger. I cannot understand, that, when receiving the dog due to dangerous circumstances, why anyone would think it was okay to show the letter accompanying it. The dog is safe, but now mother and son are worse off...why on earth would you think it's okay to give the boys name and age?? Heartwarming? NO, infuriating!! Blood is on your hands, every single site that runs this story. Foolish, foolish people.

I agree that allowing the Child's note, your snapshots, & the boy's name have put his mom as well as himself at grave risk in the event that his abusive dad (or anyone even vaguely acquainted or friendly with the child's dad) may bring this sad story to the father's attention. The possible consequences could seriously jeopardize that family's relationships nagatively. Your success in finding the lovely dog a permanent home could certainly have still been successful without putting the caring youngster & his mom in such danger. Please consider, far more cafefully, how much easier your shelter could have still made this story public, found the dog a loving home, & still have gained your shelter marvelous attention WITHOUT publishing all the unnecessary details that can possibly now have put this family at horrific risk! You have definitely made a very poor choice in this situation. Your time & efforts to be helpful would have been better spent if you ID'd the abuser instead!

Leaving a dangerous man, and keeping your children safe in the process, is not easy. It took me 17 years. People say, "why doesn't she just leave?" like leaving is a thing you can just DO. At no point are a woman and her kids in MORE danger than when they are trying to LEAVE an abusive relationship.

As a pet lover I love this story, but as an emotional support teacher this irritates beyond measure. As animal cruelty is one of the first steps to abusive sociopath behavior, I would predict that the identifying information in this article has most likely put the child and his mother in danger. Shelter awareness could have been made without sharing the pic of the actual dog and naming the kid. Sometimes going viral isn't the best solution.

Thank god this lil man had enough sense to see what was unfolding before him, his dad being the piece of c**p beating a innocent animal. Kid had enough wherewithal to see and know it's bad to do and not right. The stuffed toy so his beloved pup wouldn't forget him still has me crying. Good look lil man! Good lil dude! There's a special place for you in my heart! I always adopt, my two cats were adopted as well as my beautiful hound pup. Everyday they show me how thankful they are to be with me by gracing me with their presence and showering me with pure love. Always adopt you wont be sorry! My pup was left in the middle of a corn field after being pushed out of a moving car. She was scared to go to the park the first 4 months I had her because it involved a car ride. With time, patience and a lot of love she's grown into a beautiful, loving ,extremely friendly and trusting friend. Animals have what humans refuse to have.....forgiveness.

I'm so happy that the poor little adorable puppy no longer has to suffer the abuse of the boys father and they both did what they knew deep in their hearts was right by getting the puppy out of that horrible situation but I bet they never dreamed there would be a huge viral public post like this with the kids name and everything. I just pray to God that the father or none of his friends or family members sees this and tells him about it because apparently we all know he has an angry side...please think things through before just acting out for the public attention and publicity before putting a 12 year old boys and his mothers lives in danger. They even had to sneak and bring the puppy there behind his back.... Thank you for being kind and taking the puppy in and instantly taking care of any health issues and needs you felt the puppy needed and getting him ready for a great home for someone to love him like he needs. I have rescued 4 of my babies "pitbulls" from harmful situations, its so sad how people can be

Both of my pups were abused in some way, nothing as bad as my poor girl tootsi, I adopted her and love her even with the work on not being afraid and the time to teach her not to potty in the house, she had scars all over her chest and ears from bites, her tail is forever cocked at a weird angle from being broken but her spirts have lifted so much 🥰

As heartbreaking decision as this was, they definitely did the right thing out of love & desperation. Who knows by the sound of things the father would've probably sold this poor pup into a dog fighting ring which would've been horendous. I commend this boy & his mother for their selflessness. I hope & pray that they are safe & that the farther doesn't turn abusive towards them or if he has that this is the last straw & that they leave & find somewhere safe away from him. Amen.

This child along with his mother did a brave and selfless thing. They may well have paid dearly for it. Abusers rarely limit themselves to animals. My hope is that this puppy finds a loving home where his needs are met. The little boy who gave him up is not that fortunate.

Can't stand grown men who need to assert their dominance on a defenseless animal. And it shows this man has no care for anyone or anything else but himself. He cares not how his actions affect the dog, his wife, and sadly his own son as well. His 12 year old son is already more of a man than he is. Recognizing giving the dog up, no matter how much it breaks his heart, is the only thing that can ensure its safety and to have a chance at the lfe he deserves. Usually kids watch the parents to learn. Seems like dad needs to watch his son more and be educated.

What a genrous thing to do for such a small animal to be so helpless and for you as a little boy to go the extra mile to help an innocent animal with no intention to bother but to live on planet earth as god has placed any animal here.

To those who are criticizing the shelter for posting this story: you do realize that this did NOT happen in the US? It involves a poor child in a poor town/village in Mexico. Having worked with many such children and their families, I sincerely doubt they have ready access to the Internet. Further, I would be greatly surprised to learn they own a computer. Try to remember that what is "normal" in a progressive nation may not be "normal" elsewhere and what we take for granted (Easy access to computers and the internet) may not be true everywhere. Mexico is not a backward nation, but just like everywhere -- including the US -- there are serious pockets of poverty. I suspect this child lives in such a pocket.

Wow, you really think poor people in developing countries don't have access to the internet? Whatsapp's bread and butter is in developing countries. There are places that don't have running water, but they have smartphones. Flint, Michigan for instance...

Such a selfless act by the 12-year-old and his mother. He is definitely being raised right and I would request through Bored Panda to see if they let the Shelter or the family who adopted the pup know if they arrange a meeting time to time to let the boy and the dog meet. "Here is the plush toy so that he doesn't forget me" is not an easy thing to do for a 12-year-old.

I am really concerned for the safety of this boy and his mother. 1.) What they both did for this puppy was a brave act of love and kindness 2.) I'm glad the puppy has a lot of support now and a bright future 3.) Despite #2, the shelter put the boy and his mom at risk here. The father is likely not just violent towards the puppy. Possibly best to rethink posts like this in the future as it can have mixed consequences. Best wishes to the three of them!! 3.)

People like that shouldn't have children, I have an abusive father and growing up in that environment affects you all your life. I hope someone seeing this story recognizes the family by the few details here and reports to the police so they can do a welfare check and bring CPS into play also. As to the comment about dad reading bored panda, he won't but that doesn't mean squat, when something goes viral it gets shared all kinds of places. Others may be talking about it where dad overheard and joins convo to get more info. Or some dummy, not thinking before speaking, may say hey (insert dad's name) don't you have a boy named Andres and a dog like this? I hope that doesn't happen but I fear for this boy and his mom.

I'm in tears being a DV survivor myself & my ex husband killing my cats during our divorce I couldn't rescue from him in time makes me all the more sad😥😥😥😥😥😥. I have always adopted the forlorn & lost & underdog kitties & always feed animsls & I know they did the RIGHT THING. BUT it makes me Realize also that they're being abused as well. Because a person especially a man that would abuse an animal he has no respect for life and he will abuse any one. I'd pray and hope that his mother and him get far away from this man I pray to God that they do and maybe 1 day they'll be able to be reunited with their dog some place safe. Let's all pray that everyone mother child and the beautiful dog that poor thing didn't deserve to be harmed, but they saved it and they're risking their lives doing it. They are true heroes because once the father finds out their lives are in danger so I hope after they left the dog maybe they're going some place safe & escaping. 😥💓😥 may God bless them ALL

I am so happy that the puppy will be well taken care of. The young boy is a hero in my eyes, making this huge sacrifice. But animal abuse often leads to abuse of people. I hope so much that mother and child will get away from this abusive situation!

Why do people only flock to shelters with offers to adopt an animal when stories like this come out? Please people, if you have room in your heart and home, adopt a shelter pet, even though it has no sensational story attached to it. Believe me, it's an amazing feeling to save a life.

I think they totally did the right thing. That monster of a dad would have killed the puppy if he’d beaten him more. The puppy is a pit bull, or maybe a cross, they are the BEST dogs but some people misunderstand them. I’m sure the boy will have more dogs when he’s older and the father is out of the picture

Having read the other comments, I am now worrying how the boy and his mother are coping living with such a monster? Logically, anyone capable of hurting a defenceless animal is also capable of hurting a child, and therefore a weaker sex, ie., his wife.

This is a beautiful story and I do think this could possibly put the boy and his mother in danger. I'm hoping the father isn't into social media and never sees the story. But if he does I hope he hangs his head in shame and I hope he's afraid to do anything to the boy and his mother for fear that he will be caught and charged with animal cruelty in addition to any other charges. Animal cruelty is now a felony.

It is most likely that poor boy and his mother suffer the violence from that abusive man because of their action, but they were brave, and before let him sell or beat more that poor puppy, they decided to put him in a safe place.

Right so the boy TOLD you his Dad is violent and wants to sell the dog but the boy and mum secretly gave him away... And you decided to post that all over the internet. Idiots. Boy and mum have probably both been beaten up because of you. You should take this story down or at least the boy’s name and dog’s photo.

People that mistreat animals are the lowest of the low. I have NEVER bought an animal other than the meanest cat I'd ever seen. All of my pups have been rescues or stray's. The one I have now was thrown in a dumpster on the coast and fortunately someone found her and she is my baby now.

That must have been a hard decision for that young boy and his mother to come to. There is no doubt in my mind they reached it with some fear as to what could happen to them when the low life found out what they did. That was a brave stand they took on behalf of that puppy. Sounds like they need to find a way to get themselves out of it as well!

It seems we all are concerned ,the boy and his mother as they could be in danger, the father could also be abusive to mom and her son, I think it is a real possibility, it is a coward, who hurt their family and animals, this man likely has a history of abuse with animals, or people, sadly it is not known who he abuses now, the boy or the mom, something needs to be done, the mom and boy may be living in daily fear, if I lived near them I would find a way, trust me !!!

They definitely did the right thing, and I wish animal abuse would have harder laws. Some people are so cruel to both helpless humans and animals but as long as criminals have more rights then the victims there will be no justice in this world. I just🙏that no one will ever do too them what they do to humans and animals, they just plain sorry.

Very brave and selfless of the boy n his mother and truly do hope that they will not have any more sadness or hurt put on them n I think it's pretty obvious that 12 year old is already w ay more of a kind hearted stand up man then the coward who get his karma. For one thing if hes beating on a puppy he pry spends most his time out trying to act like a tough guy and isn't to interested in looking at animal stories or pry even what's going on with the world. Pry is to messed up on whatever his substances of choice are that his concerns are focused there and would be more concerned that since his punching bag is gone now that he doesnt turn it onto the child or the mom but that little boy pry has more sense n scruples the the dad has ever even had a thought about having. In my opinion I like to think that the boy n the mom have each other's back n if they are going to get that puppy somewhere safe then they will do it for themselves also if need be. In my opinion n experiences in li

Or maybe if the dad does come across this a higher power will step in and hopefully hit him with some serious reality as hard as a ton of bricks and all of a sudden he will realize what a evil low life waste of space he is and sees what a complete douch bag he is and that his son is an amazing little human being that he should be looking up to and learning from n the boy must have got his kind heart n soul n courage from his mom so this dude should be nothing but grateful and realize how lucky he is n instead of being a punk that the world would be a better place without his sad excuse of existence. Maybe he needs to be publicly humiliated and shamed and he pry won't feel to tough n cool anymore n maybe he would think twice about the next time he wants to abuse an animal or his son or wife

Adopt the dog back for boy cause he is the one that truly loves it. To give a dog away to save its life is true love.

God bless young boy and his mother for their selfless act of ensuring the dog was brought to his safe place. As difficult a decision it was, they knew they were doing the right thing and also knew the sadness it would bring them not having the dog by their side. Please pray for this family because that father has issues. I pray that because the dog is no longer a part of the family, the father won't now start beating his son and wife. The boy saved this puppy by giving her up out of love. But who will save the boy and his mother? The father is an abuser who repeatedly injured the puppy. He has or will also abuse the boy and his mother. And the abuse may increase if he finds that they protected the puppy from him. May God protect this brave caring boy and his mother. I feel sorry for the boy who gave up his puppy so his father wont hit, hurt, kick or abuse this beautiful puppy. I am sorry for the boy and I am sure he misses his puppy so much. Is there a way he can visit this puppy with his mum. As for the father he sounds like he is not a nice person, he should be reported for animal abuse and I hope he does not abuse the boy or the mother, I think they need help and go to the police. I am fed up with abuse in this world. There is no respect or compassion. I pray for their safety. Lots of love to boy and mum, be strong. Xx Oo 🙏 🙇 😘😢🐶💝💞

A very hard thing to do, what a noble act for this wonderful boy and his mom, saving this vulnerable sweet boy that he loved so much, at his own heartache, such a selfless act which guaranteed a safe and happy life rather than a life or fear and sadness, my heart goes out too you. I hope that you and your mum are safe, I have no words that would best describe his father I wouldn't waste energy, but hope karma finds him soon.

Im worried for the kid and the mom who realized the dad was abusive. Imagine the things they thought before letting go off the pup. They loved the pup enuff to let go off him so atleast he has a good life even if it means the dad abused them more for making this decision. I wish they could be protected. Im pretty sure hes abusive to the mom n kid too. 😔

I'm hoping that the next step is that Mom and Andre are the next ones turning up on the steps of a shelter. You see, people shelters will not accept the companion animals, which is why a lot of abused women stay with their abusers. If they take their long-time pets to a shelter, chances are the animal will be euthanized. If they leave the cat or dog at him, chances are it will be tortured to death 'just to show *her*!' The puppy was young enough that it would probably get a new home even without the backstory.

for those who are worried the shelter publicising this would endanger the boy & his mom should realize 2 things.. just going home without the dog, the dad ALREADY KNOWS what they did. they knew he would - it was the choice THEY made not the shelter's.. one must hope they had a plan to deal with the problem. - second - just because they posted this info doesnt mean they did so the same day as it happened. more likely it could have been up to weeks later. the posting says there were health /injury issues they had to attend to. i highly doubt the shelter would have posted anything before the pup was treated and healed - i think the shelter did the best they could. they got exposure for EVERY animal they had in shelter & reminded people of the plights of far to many animals

So sad and brave to surrender this pup. Kids shouldn't have to make heartbreaking decisions like this but his heart is in the right place to recognize his dog is in danger. Speaking of adopting, I have been looking to rescue a dog, but the rescues I've seen ask literally hundreds and hundreds of dollars which I don't have. I understand all the reasons they do, but $500-$600 is way too much for a lot of people to be able to shell out. Because I'm a senior citizen, I need a small dog, dogs like this one are too much for me to handle and little dogs are pricey. But I always prefer the idea of rescuing. I hope some day this boy will find another furever friend.

So this boy goes to lenghts to give this puppy a life, without showing himself, because he is afraid of the consequences he might get from his father if he finds out. Then someone posts it online, so now - any friend or family member who knows a guy with a cane corso looking dog with a son named Andres - can show the father what happened to their dog. Did anyone think this through?

Great that the dog is now safe, however the shelter, before making this go viral (or even sharing it publicly at all) should have really thought about the safety of the mom and boy. If the father sees this, and recognises the dog and the realises then story is about him and his own family it will have terrible consequences. The shelter really should have thought a bit more about the circumstances and not so much about online attention.

Amen.

He is definitely being raised right and I would request through Bored Panda to see if they let the Shelter or the family who adopted the pup know if they arrange a meeting time to time to let the boy and the dog meet. He absolutely did the right thing, but I’m concerned what may happen to the boy and his mom if the father sees this. The shelter should have kept the story private and off social media. As for the father, if it ever comes to light who he is, he needs to be charged for abuse.

This story could have been shared without identifying the boy. Shame on this shelter! A CHILD trusted you! I have lived with a dangerous man and getting myself and the kids away from him was not easy. You have greatly increased the danger that this family is in.

I th9nk the boy was brave and cared alot about his dog, to put his well being first. Very hard for a boy of 12 to get rid of his buddy. I am very proud of this young man. His dad is not a very nice man, if he hits a dog, he probably hits people too. That is what worries me most. I just hope the boy and his mother are safe.

I am so proud of this boy and his mom. This is a hard decision. This kid has a damned good heart and I hope he’s able to keep his heart this pure. I’m exceedingly pissed at the father. I’m sure that if he’s beating the dog that’s not all he’s beating. I hope that the boy and his mother find protection and safety, and that this puppy finds a good home where he is spoiled rotten and loved the way animals deserve to be loved.

I can't even read this , it's so f*****g sad and I hope the mother tries to get away from that piece of s**t father. If not for herself obviously, but for her son. People like that shouldn't have children, I have an abusive father and growing up in that environment affects you all your life. My father definitely should never had been one, but what's done is done. I had grandparents to run to, and who thankfully didn't put up with any animal abuse.

I agree: I hope the boy’s pos father doesn’t see this. I hope this boy & his mother don’t have to endure similar treatment ☹️ Maybe by some miracle the shelter knows who this boy is, where he lives & has gotten in contact w police or someone who can help them find a safe place. Or maybe the shelter knows the two are no longer in a position to suffer repercussions once the man finds out what they did or he sees that the dog is gone. I hope anyway

I honestly do think the boy and his mom did the right thing by this puppy. They are trying to give him a life that the boy’s father is taking away. No animal deserves to be mistreated. I don’t believe that the father was gonna actually sell the puppy but possible beat it to death and tell the boy that he sold it. The boy and his mom are brave to do what they did. God bless them.

Some people are so cruel to both helpless humans and animals but as long as criminals have more rights then the victims there will be no justice in this world.

What a sad story. Made me cry. I just don't understand how people can be harmful to animals. It really does shine a light on how dark people can be. I feel as though it's similar to hurting a baby. Shame on anyone capable of hurting such innocence.

I think the dad needs to go to a shelter also. He's mean and dangerous to his family. He should be sent to a jail where he will get a free cot, 3 meals a day, free medical and dental care. I believe all jails still provide those things don't they?

It's not that simple in many cases. Whether it be the law of the country they're in, their finances, lack of support...if it was as easy as walking away, domestic violence shelters wouldn't be necessary.

I know we all hate the dad. But on a lighter note and a made up story. I would hope dad finds out. Tells everyone he needs help. Seeks help. They become a happy family and not abusive.

May the dog find a loving new home where he is genuinely appreciated.

Lord have mercy.

The only responsible thing to do is take this post down!! You have put a boy and his mother in danger for publicity and views!! TAKE IT DOWN!

Dude.. they are Mexicans. There's no urgency. Undoubtedly the story aired in Mexico long before it made it to us.

If he is that mean, I don't think that father will read this. He doesn't deserve the dog or the lil boy. I am glad the lil dog is safe.

Too bad they didn't put the dad in a shelter but there's no such thing as an abusive a*****e shelter because nobody wants them, however if such a thing did exist I would be perfectly ok if it wasn't a no kill.

I hope someone finds this monster and gives him a taste of his own medicine. May the boy and his mom find safe haven

Have sent an email to Bored Panda to ask them to consider removing the post as represents a potential danger to Son and Mother.

Hope there is a manhunt for this despicable human being before he gets to the mother and son.

for those who are worried the shelter publicising this would endanger the boy & his mom should realize 2 things.. just going home without the dog, the dad ALREADY KNOWS what they did. they knew he would - it was the choice THEY made not the shelter's.. one must hope they had a plan to deal with the problem.

Absolute bastard scum of the earth excuse for a man, i hope that dad gets cancer. Poor little lad, glad the dog is out of that horrible situation now but i feel the young lad is not safe either. Terrible stuff, makes me feel helpless.

The probability that this dad is doing the same things to his family is very high. So sad

People race to adopt viral animals so they can share in the fame by making them a FB page or instagram and have it go viral. It's gross.

It's a hoax. 12 year old boys do not write that neat. AT ALL. And it really looks like a woman's handwriting. Great job getting donations!

You ignorant, stupid, thoughtless fool, photos don't lie, that poor, defenceless little dog has only fear in his eyes & the little boy & his mother would have been heartbroken to feel they had to resort to taking the dog to a shelter to escape the cruelty it was being subjected to by the evil sadistic father, a poor excuse for a human being

Hey, boredpanda, rather than worrying about your "hits" and advertising income as a result, perhaps you can prioritise the safety of the child who gave up his beloved friend... AND TAKE THIS STORY DOWN? Seriously.... please do the right thing, FOR THE SAFETY OF THE CHILD. Please.
