This Online Group Is “Showcasing The Idea That We Live In A Dystopia That Is Boring” One Post At A Time (50 Posts)
One may think a dystopia is just a trope of science fiction writing. Outlandish possibilities of human or not-so-human realities, where all that we fear becomes an inescapable fact of daily life. Again, it’s just fiction, right? Well, sometimes the present is a lot more disturbing than meets the eye.
The “Boring Dystopia” subreddit has been sharing posts that show just how broken the matrix is, or, mayhaps, the fact that one of those is just a matter of imagination, as a completely controlled environment would not allow for this much chaos. How did we end up here? Your guess is as good as mine. How do we get out is the question we need to start asking.
As you scroll through this list, make sure to upvote the worst of the worst that reality has to offer, and leave some comments below, and if you’re craving some more bitterness to further ruin your day, here is another article for you. Now let’s get into it.

If we are to consider all of the things in life that are looming over us—global warming, the housing crisis, rising inflation, wars, famine, natural disasters, overpopulation, etc.—we’ll very quickly get overwhelmed by the increasingly blank picture that the future paints for us. So we run. We look the other way.
But maybe our avoidance of the burning issues at hand is what’s caused it to get this bad in the first place. So today, let’s touch on just the tip of the iceberg of the dystopian present day we are living in. It may not seem that bad! But the more you read the posts shared by the subreddit r/boringdystopia, the more you may realize how bad we’ve let things get. And yet, it’s not even that interesting, all things considered.
This Is So Painful
In my language SAD is short for USA...the irony!
Load More Replies...And as someone from this state it fudging infuriates me. A child at that age risks never properly developing from carrying a fetus. Furthermore we are a state with poor health infrastructure with several hospitals that have closed. We have a government that refuses to expand Medicaid access. Even though RSA(retirement systems of Alabama ( pension plan for public sector employees) endorses it and furthermore it's no one's right to tell people who are capable of getting pregnant what to do with our bodies. Also a twelve year old can't consent to sex so that child will be imprisoned more harshly than a fudging RaPist. As Tupac once said since a man can't make one he has no right to tell a woman when and where to create one. Also these Terms we have in charge here will cry about child groomers and then let this caca get a pass. Sorry for the rant just really fudging angry. Also trying not to swear and get censored
Yup one of the many reasons I left alabama when I turned 18. As beautiful as the state is and I do really love my home state, the political problems makes it impossible for me to ever want to move back
Load More Replies...More and more red states are hopping on the bandwagon. On top of that some are drafting laws allowing adoption centers to deny adoptions based on sexual orientation and RELIGION.
Load More Replies...Yeah, I live in the state that forced a 10 year old to go to another state for an abortion after she was raped. Yes Jim Jordan, it actually happened- just like the molesting OSU wrestling coach you ignored
Curious…what happened to the man who raped her? Or her mother who stayed with the man? The whole entire thing is disgusting.
Load More Replies...Wait a minute, one of the countries mentioned in that comment is nothing like the other! One is a place where woman's rights are being eroded away year by year (mainly by men) a place where homophobia is rampant and idiots 'patrol' the streets armed to the teeth. The other place is Iran.
So sad and disgusting, but so real. AND there are women voting for this as well!! Like chickens voting for Colonel Sanders! I don't get it.
That‘s what happens when they make abortions illegal.
Load More Replies...They lied about roe wade not being in danger, all Christian fascists
Load More Replies...This is so infuriating I feel uncomfortable upvoting it, but I have to. Some people in the US nowadays really can't wait to be living in the Republic of Gilead.
Or Texas, your baby will not survive birth, and might kill you in the process but we can’t do anything about it because MIGHT kill isn’t addressed in the new Texas abortion laws.
And now in Florida, if teachers are found having banned books in their classrooms, they can be charged with felony. They are told to cover their books or just remove them in case a parent complains. They even banned Malala’s book! The GOP is the new Nazi Party.
When I was in school I got in trouble for *checks notes* standing, holding a pencil, literally just existing
Load More Replies...The similarities between Iranian extremism and the American far right is astounding. And frankly terrifying.
Far right = mainstream republicans. I wonder what honest Abe would think of what his party has become.
Load More Replies...Lets see the bad country: Loads of crazed religious, and various sects of the main religions as well. Mass coverage of crazed religious leaders shown on TV even. Objectifying women. Handcuffed during traffic stops. Beaten by police. Migrants deported, treated badly. Disapproval of "other" genders, relationships etc. Abortions frowned on or banned. Women murdered, beaten by partners frequently. No medical treatment unless you can pay. Extreme wealth discrepancies: the very rich, the very ;poor. Little knowledge of other countries living conditions, customs or even geography. No female rulers Justice difference between rich and poor. High rates of imprisonment. Long sentences. Death penalties. Extreme ideas of feminine beauty. Everyday violence and shootings common. Now which countries is that?
I wish someone would do more of these like that and make a thread "actually that was America". Have seen a few in the wild and wished they were consolidated. I'm not saavy enough to figure out how to do it . But damn when you do hear it it puts evertinto perspective and shuts the right down.
Load More Replies...Actually I am betting that even in the Middle Ages things were not this draconian. Defining an early pregnancy as a "baby" appears to be a recent development. I haven't traced it all the way back to the Middle Ages, but when the US was founded abortion was legal. It wasn't considered murder until the pregnancy was far along. The cut off point was something known as "quickening", the point at which a mother could feel the baby move. The original laws outlawing abortion in the US had nothing at all to do with the fetus, and was not considered a moral issue. Rather it was a safety issue because the herbs used at the time were killing women. It only became a moral issue later, and when it was used to smear early feminists. Ironically at thst time, feminists were working on other issues, not advocating for abortion.
Load More Replies...Pretty damn much Christian fascist States full of hypocrites we need more unwanted babies born into poverty and abuse and neglect that's the Christian way
Unfortunately, it is. The majority of the people don't want this kind of extremism, but the politicians do and we only get to vote for who gets the power, not what they do with it. This makes me relieved to live in California where I don't have to worry much about it, especially as a woman.
Load More Replies......but why would you enforce that just so Catholic and republicans can have their ways
Alabama isn't a catholic state. I knew 2 families that were catholic growing up. It's just a bunch of southern Baptist and methodist who think they know best for women (and girls) and have brainwashed most of them in thinking that abortion is worse than carrying a pregnancy caused by a dad raping his daughter....
Load More Replies...Same stupid ssa reason. God's will. Those are some bicth ssa gods.
Ah, the very civilized USA who continue undauntedly to want to export their lifestyle to the world...
Which lifestyle? At this point we are so split that whatever lifestyle is exported depends on which party is in power. But yes, we need to focus on getting our own country in order and not on preaching to the world.
Load More Replies...I have very little tolerance for organized religion, but what people need to accept as fact is that there are fanatics in all religions, and that's what makes them intolerable.
Generally, I think that it's abortion as a means of birth control, that is what is objected too. Cases such as this 12 year old are brought up time, and time again. Just what is the real percentage of abortions for this reason, or something similar? The REAL numbers, not the ones that politicians want us to believe? If you've ever, ever, held an infant that was born too soon too live, you just might understand the other side of this issue. Those are real people, not just a glob of cells.
This has been debunked. The person who has a abortion isnt liable. The doctor is though. It is sadly more then enough true things to say about Alabamas abortion laws, no need to spread hoaxes. https://apnews.com/article/fact-check-alabama-abortion-law-prison-254325183469
Ok - story changes to “12 year old girl raped and impregnated by father denied abortion due to physician fears of prosecution” The girl is still being punished for the horrific act forced upon her.
Load More Replies...No one is defending Iran in this post. But if you think that there are not Americans who would like to do that, then you haven't been paying attention to the far right.
Load More Replies...In theory. In many states the laws are so unclear that doctors are basically waiting until women are on their deathbeds before doing anything, for fear of prosecution. Women are dying because of this.
Load More Replies...It's absolutely true and even if the courts and law enforcement won't enforce it, medical professionals are hesitant to perform abortions out of fear that it will be. So the problem still exists. Women and girls who are forced to remain pregnant when they can't or don't want to be.
Load More Replies...Nobody uses abortion as birth control. That's just not something that happens. Ever. If someone has had numerous abortions, they are almost certainly being abused. Also, it's literally NOBODY'S job to gatekeep what qualifies as a "real need" to seek an abortion for someone else. That's the bedrock of this entire issue - that it never should have been brought into the political and public domain, nevermind legislated, to begin with.
Load More Replies...Do you have an actual rebuttal to offer? Or just ad hominem insults? Because your statement is factually incorrect so the only person spouting bullshît is you.
Load More Replies...There is no baby involved in an abortion nor is there any murder committed. Kindly stop with the overwrought, pearl-clutching melodrama when discussing a medical procedure if you want to sit at the grown up table.
Load More Replies...They're Not Wrong
In many cases in life, dealing with problems head-on is the only way to get things to change, be it for the better or worse. After all, change is inevitable regardless of how much we want things to stay stable and undisturbed. However, there is only so much that each of us has control over, especially when it comes to problems that are far-reaching and globally concerning.
To protect ourselves from the unrelenting pressure and the constant gnawing feeling of doom, we escape. We look the other way. There are two things that coexist in the matter of escaping reality, and Michael Patanella identifies them as avoidance and dissociation. Both offer temporary relief when taken in moderation, but of course, this can get out of hand easily.

SO TRUE!! We no longer have free lunches at our school, and it’s not cheap! (Although the lunches at our school are good)

The coping mechanisms that come with escapism can be destructive and unhealthy, even in the short term. Cheap alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, overeating, endless mind-numbing activities, and easily available credit cards that lead to holidays, mindless purchases, and debt are just a few of the ways people choose to avoid the problems they face.
As stated by Amanda Dacquel, when we avoid, we live on a repeat loop, until we hit a wall at full speed, with a poster on it that says “the real world.” Responsibilities will catch up to us in one way or another, so it’s best to use the tool of escapism in small increments to help restore our batteries rather than numbing us away from existing in the chaos that is life.
Must We Apply Whatever We've Learned?
What's The Cause?
Exactly
For those of us who are a bit too comfortable with escapism, there are ways of getting out of the continuous cycle of mindless pleasure and avoidance of responsibility. According to Patrick Allan, enforcing the “real life-right now” rule may be a good place to start. The more fun you make real life seem, the less you may feel the need to escape it.
Meeting up with your friends instead of blowing them off to play a video game, for example, is essentially substituting one positive experience for another. Just make sure the real-life thing is something you at least think you will enjoy, otherwise it could send you crawling back to escapism. Furthermore, realizing what you’re trying to escape from and why is key to grounding yourself.
Stealing Might Be The Word For It
A Big Sham
A rent payment is not a credit transaction. Try to understand the difference. The real kicker is that you might think paying off a debt would improve a persons credit worthiness ie. I borrowed money and then paid it back before I said I would. Nope, closing a credit line by paying it off lowers your credit rating. Now that is bass ackwards.
The Root Of Our Dysfunction
Let's all thank the Supreme Court and Citizens United. I'll believe "corporations are people, too" [Mitt Romney] when a corporation gets sentenced to death in Texas.
But now we enter the phase where we’ve stopped running away from the problems and come to realize what a mess life is. Can we really prevent the current-day dystopia from spreading further, ruining lives and potentially making us go extinct? According to Duncan Jefferies, the one way to stop sleepwalking towards it all is through an informed citizenry. A what?
He continues to argue that teaching critical thinking in schools and having researchers work across different disciplines so that they’re better prepared to tackle the ethical questions that will shape the 21st century, are ways to achieve this. We need more dialogue between the people working on new technologies and the policymakers who create the laws around them, as well as greater openness about the risks.
Essentially, stay informed and trust the lawmakers to do the right thing. Grand. Guess it’s time to unionize and protest against the system. Just a thought.
America Is A Joke At This Point
Someone posted a photo of their itemised maternity bill from a US hospital on another forum a while back-it included a $50 charge for "skin to skin care." Skin to skin is literally putting the naked baby onto the mother or father's bare chest. It's meant to help with temperature regulation, and is alleged to help soothe the baby immediately after birth, but its not a medical procedure. Mum picks up the baby, puts it on her chest, and the hospital charges $50 for a midwife to watch? It's utterly ludicrous. The American healthcare system is beyond a joke.
Is It Too Challenging?
Pro-Life? Nah, I Think The Right Term Is Pro-Birth
As a dystopic future looms over us and lawmakers become complacent, forgetting to look at the bigger picture, we must remain vigilant and remember that the shape of the world is in our hands. What we do matters and, truthfully, the sheer number of us doing a little every day can lead to something very substantial in a little bit of time. If there is a livable planet in the next 50 years or so that is…

I may be wrong here, but women choose to be nuns. If you don't want to wear a nun's habit, don't become a nun. It's the woman's decision, based not only on her faith but on her life choice (as in "work uniform"). Simple. There are countries where a woman merely going outside without hijab is punished and occasionally killed. I don't see the two as being comparable. Unless the bigotry is against women, rather than religion. Plenty of places where that's the case.

As European with friends in the US it makes me sad and angry, too. And while we're still better off in Europe in terms of healthcare/support of people with low income etc, income and wealth inequality and all the problems associated with it is growing here as well. Sadly, we (or at least the politicians) are quite arrogant when it comes to the situation in the US instead of trying to implement measures that prevent further inequality so we don't go down that road. Which, I suppose, at least partly shows that many decisions here are also driven by corporate lobbyism - just a bit more covert.
