Damaged vending machines. "No change" messages on broken ATMs. Pepsi ads sponsoring diabetes research. These images may have little in common, but transmit a widely shared yet subtle sensation — they’re the unsettling reminders of a dark and strange twist in the reality we find ourselves in today. And unfortunately folks, it’s also a pretty bleak one.

Let me present to you the 'Boring Dystopia' subreddit, an online community dedicated to "chronicling how Advanced Capitalist Society is not only dystopic, but also incredibly boring." In case you've never heard of this term, it was coined by the late British academic and cultural theorist Mark Fisher. It refers to the feeling of unease in the form of mildly coercive signs that flourish in a late-stage capitalist society.

We at Bored Panda scoured the online group and handpicked some of the most vivid examples that illustrate there's something not quite right with this world. Continue scrolling and be sure to share your thoughts with us in the comment section below. And after you’re done reading this piece, take a look at our earlier compilations full of dystopian madness right here, here, and here.

It's so well-written as well, sounds like a passage from a dystopian novel, but the dystopia is our reality.

As someone from the UK I can’t imagine how awful this must be, and it scares me because some people here want to privatise our NHS. And that would be a really really bad idea.

I really don't understand how healthcare is linked to so many different aspects of life in the US, be it work or housing or marital status. What they call benefits in the US are called "rights" in every other developed country ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Many elderly people have commitment ceremonies too because they would lose all kinds of benefits. We expected spouses of WW2 vets to never remarry after their spouse's death, or they would forfeit tons of benefits.

Our healthcare is so overpriced. Even having insurance, for things like x-rays Im charged more in my 20% than what the insurance companies pays with their "negotiated" rates. Your charge is based on full amount, not the negotiated insurance rate. And why they heck could i be denied physical therapy for a broken arm?

My son's ADD medication is $300/mo. Thank goodness we have prescription insurance that brings it down to $40. If he didn't have that he'd be failing grade after grade. Every time I get it I think of the poor people who have kids with this condition who can't even afford $40 let alone $300. Their kids can't even make it through the most basic school, no matter how hard they work, due to our medical system. Probably doomed to a life of poverty too.

I'm amazed people allow it, I would expect people to protest the hell out of this system. Insulin, inhalers, heart medications should all be free of charge or very heavily subsidised. In my family nobody pays for those things. They are cheaper than treating the consequences of no medication for the government. Prevention is cheaper than treatment.

Our country is horrific when it comes to healthcare. So many people are dying before their time because the US just cares about money. My health is rapidly failing because I can't afford health insurance much less any care. My time is coming up soon but if I had lived in another country I could have taken care of things and been healthier than I am now.

You know what stains my knickers? Our 1st responders from 911 have many breathing problems from the dust and soot they were working in. Some of them have to go to Cuba to get their inhalers because the ones they really need are not covered by any insurance plan. Personally, I went to a doctor to look at my shoulders, as I was in constant pain. They informed me I needed operations on both, but I had not contributed enough the year before, so sorry. It took another three years to get everything lined up with state and feds. When they did my operations, they literally had to cut what was left of my tendons off of my bones, drill holes in the bones and tie the tendons in the holes. 5months later I could start therapy. Total of over 2 years. I worked for every day of my life, over 50 years, and had to wait over 5 years before they would even start my operations. It just isn't right. And they pay 250$ to bury you. The real cost is 2k.its just wrong

Twice now I've gone to Germany (from the US) and bought a couple of years' worth of inhalers for my son, who has asthma. Because I got the cheapest plane tickets that I could find and was able to stay with a friend while I was there, the cost savings for the inhalers more than covered the cost of the trip. I bought 10 each of Albuterol and Flovent. In the US each inhaler was about $225 (my last trip was a couple of years ago; the price has probably increased substantially since then). In Germany I paid about $13 each.

I married my husband in 2011. I didn't lose Medicare, but I lost Medicaid. In 2007, I went bankrupt due to the cost of my medications that I take for seizures. $900 and I got just under that for a monthly income at the time. Marrying my husband let me be on his good insurance that covers my medications and still lets me use Medicare as a secondary insurance for doctors and hospitals. Marriage was worth it for me.

It's artificial and constitutes price gouging. One of my meds costs $3000/month at the local pharmacy (for the brand name). The generic is $1200/month. Those prices are WITH insurance. And I get a 3-month supply via mail order pharmacy for $3.34/month, which proves that the prices do not need to be high for companies to make a profit.

I get a ton of medication, so I have a special approval. So I pay around 40usd per month for all of the prescribed medication I need (regardless of how much I need). I get medication for at least 3000 USD per year. Btw. what I pay each month, I get back.

One of my husband's prescriptions, a once a month auto-injectable, is around $20,000 per year. He's on Medicaid through the state so the government covers it. But if he makes 'too much', which is below the poverty level, they take it all away. We ate living in a collapsing society.

Forgot to add if a person gets legally married and resides in the same household, the two parties income would be used against them by the COMBINED reported income as a household. There are strict requirements for amount one can earn to actually receive public insurance. So that's why the post said they cannot legally marry. It'll affect the guidelines and their public insurance would be automatically terminated.

I think without healthcare (or is it even WITH healthcare this expensive?) it'd be cheaper for US people to once a month by a flight to come here to Europe, buy the insulin here and than take a flight back to US. And you still have money left.

When my daughter was born she has major medical problems. We couldn't get an insurance company to cover her due to "pre-existing conditions". We applied for Medicaid for her only too be denied because we made $28 a month too much. We were told neither of us could quit our jobs but if we weren't married only my income would count. In order to keep our daughter healthy we got legally divorced. In a country where we espouse "family values", this should be shocking, but it's not.

I’m 51, and had to apply for disability and Medicaid after having lumbar fusion, and extremely dangerous complications. Fusion was anterior and posterior. I had approx. 30 emergency abdominal surgeries. At times my family was told say goodbye she will never wake up. I married in 2019. I had been declared Disabled by a federal judge. I was given less than $1000 a month cash. I was also given Medicare and Medicaid, and thankfully my monthly Medicare premium was paid by Medicaid. Shortly after we got married & by shortly after I mean 2 months after getting married. I received a letter stating that since I married I would lose by Medicaid. This also meant I’d lose dental and vision insurance. My next Letter informed me since I was no longer eligible for Medicaid they would no longer pay my monthly premium.. Needless to say I can no longer afford it. But all of our politicians have excellent health care even after they retire. I don't know about you but I seriously think there's something wrong with that system. As far as I'm concerned they are the reason that things are the way they are. This is the reason that many older folks forego marriage. They may be on a fixed income and/or can't afford to lose the benefits that they already have. People would revolt if their taxes were to increase in order to provide health care and medicine for those in need. It's despicable and shameful.

I am terrified he will have no health care when his June 24th birthday comes up next month. He has hypertension, Pre- diabetes, and is overweight. I have been addressing this since he was small but it's really hard to get him to stop using food for comfort. Working negates Medicare eligibility, I have to prove his disability to have our insurance continued. When he gets hired for part-time work they let him go before health insurance kicks in. Right now I am trying to attack the problems simultaneously. He's on an interview right now at a major hospital for kitchen staff. I am praying as hard as I can that this turns into a permanent job

I moved away from Texas to help my partner be able to relieve pain from a brain tumor. We had been together for over 18 years when he died. I don't get social security from him in the state that we moved too, even though Texas is a common law state. Our daughter only received social security the last year of High School. This was all done, because if we were married, we couldn't afford the extra 5,000 to add him too my health insurance.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm a single mom, who is also an epileptic. I rely on Medicare and Medicaid for my meds. If I were to marry again, he cannot have a very large income because I'd (we'd) be responsible for the costs of my meds, thousands of dollars each month. We'd have to have *a lot* of money to afford them. People sometimes assume I want to marry for the money. God no. I do not want money. I want love, but I also want my meds. Your money could actually destroy my ability to function in this world. I need you to be "poor" too. It's effed up.

You do not have a fair health system in the States. Your health system only runs on screwing as much pain and suffering out of the American people as possible. A real healthcare system is one that doesn't charge you an arm and a kidney to pay for something that those with a country wide system should cover usually paid through our taxes.

I have several chronic illnesses and need 2 different inhalers but can only afford one because the second one which is actually the one I need the most cost over $300 and I don't have insurance anymore.. So yeah, I literally need my inhalers to be be able to breath but can't afford it... Thank America after working for 41 years and paying taxes into the system and as soon as I can't work anymore I get left out.. But by all means let the big corporations go and make billions without paying a single dime in taxes...

I was signing up for state Medicaid and met a woman in line with her two kids. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She and her partner had gotten married. She was so happy and thankful that her partner had got a part-time job. I did the quick math in my head. With her being married and the new job, she was going to be over the maximum amount and would not qualify. I didn't say anything. I hope she's okay.

But you guys are the ones supporting democrats that feed this disgusting system. Look at covid for example. The government funded Moderna, phizer, Johnson and Johnson etc. to create vaccines for Covid. They funded big pharma using OUR tax dollars to create a vaccine that big pharma made BANK on, do we see any of those earnings? All the while they print trillions of dollars so that our money is worth less and then tell us that inflation is a good thing. Covid made the rich richer and the poor poorer. And you wonder why some people think it was all a ruse to help the government obtain more control.

To learn more about boring dystopia, we reached out to Macon Holt, Ph.D., a researcher at Copenhagen Business School and author of Pop Music and Hip Ennui: A Sonic Fiction of Capitalist Realism. He told Bored Panda this phrase is related to Mark Fisher’s critical term capitalist realism, "which he used to describe the pervasive belief that capitalism is the only viable form of the political, social and cultural organization following the end of the cold war."

It may be difficult to wrap your head around the term "boring dystopia" but once you get the hang of it, chances are, you’ll start seeing it everywhere. "[It] is more about the aesthetic experience of living in capitalist realism at a point in time when the system appears ever more unsustainable (ecologically, [politically], and in terms of increasing inequality and decreasing standards of living) but in which no other way to organize society has emerged," Holt explained.

It's sickening how screwed up the economy is. All we can do is hope it gets better in time, but unfortunately, that seems like wishful thinking. I'm so used to living in apartments (and now a trailer in a trailer park because rents for apartments are ridiculously high) that I have no idea what it's like to live in a house. Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough. But only maybe.

Although most of us grew up imagining a dystopian future full of terrifying end-times scenes, brutal police states, and decadent rulers, it is more likely to consist of mundane and unappealing scenarios. Holt mentioned exciting movies like Blade Runner or The Matrix from the '80s and '90s that offered depictions of going out with a bang, "But as the years in which those images came around, none of the dreams or nightmares came true," he said.

Typically, the most evident samples of boring dystopia are senseless ads and ordinary images of broken machinery. When asked about other examples of this experience, Holt mentioned we can find it in bureaucracy, "like the terms of a rental contract that forbid tenants to use cooking oil on the stove, so a landlord can keep the deposit if a single drop is found on the extractor fan hood."

"NFTs are perhaps a good example of boring dystopia,” he continued. "If a sci-fi writer were to dream up a situation in which people paid the money they had earned doing actual work for a certificate of verification that they own a .jpeg of a bored ape, their editor would probably say the world the story depicted would be too depressing to publish."

He also noted that outlets such as Bored Panda draw attention to the conditions of contemporary boring dystopia in its name and try to break up the monotony of the everyday. "In boring dystopia, people are often anxious about work, housing and the future of the planet, and there's very little to alleviate this. As Mark Fisher put it 'No one is bored, everything is boring.'"

Boring dystopia tells us that while capitalism is often labeled as the most efficient economic system out there, it is not necessarily geared toward human flourishing. "Depending on who you ask, it can be argued that in some particular corners of the world at a certain point in history when there was a relatively strong welfare state and high tax regime, capitalism was part of what brought a good number of people out of poverty."

However, other people will point to the historical and contemporary violence, the destruction of the environment, and the inequality and exploitation required to make such "market dynamism" possible. According to Holt, capitalism has only ever been efficient at producing more capital. But "capital doesn't care who holds it. How it is made, what it is spent on or invested in and who gets to decide these things have always been political questions. And the answers to these questions have been, largely, deferred to the market for a long time, which has produced a world of increasing inequality, anti-democratic power structures, ecological ruin and boredom," he told us.

For some, pictures pointing out our dull dystopian reality could be a source of entertainment. For others, they may create a daunting sense of a lost future. Speaking of the latter one, Holt said that the material things that make people feel that way (skyrocketing housing prices, student-loan debts, insane medical bills — the list goes on) stem from actions at various levels of society. "It is just what happens when the interests of people with power align," he added. "Boring dystopia is the experience of our faith in the future having been betrayed. There is not a quick fix. Instead, to quote Donna Haraway, we have to "stay with the trouble" if we want to commit to a future we can flourish in."

"One piece of advice that is really easy for coming to terms with and starting to imagine a way out of boring dystopia would be to read Fisher's Capitalist Realism: Is there no Alternative? It is an incredibly accessible piece of critical theory and is only about 86 pages long. It is a great jumping-off point for finding out more. Read it with friends and talk about it after. It is a great way to feel less alone in a world that seems to be ever more isolating," Holt concluded.

I know someone who was in the US Army during the invasion of Iraq, and she said the military contractor they worked with was so absurdly over-funded that if a vehicle broke down they'd dump it in the desert, set it on fire, and buy a new one rather than fix it. They spent the whole operation throwing money around however they pleased and wasting it on other unnecessary crap, because they had "justify" the budget they'd been given.

Why there isn't just a tank in each printer, where you put standardized ink into ... like, you know, pens had that feature since 1700's ... you don't need to buy Ford gasoline, or GM gasoline, or Mercedes Gasoline in order for your car to run correctly, but just any gasoline, because it is a standardized stuff, with set features, that has to meet standards. Like ink has to anyway already ... just don't change out the tank with it all, but just sell in bottles and refill. Reuse bottles, of course, because that way, all material and energy used to make the bottle is done for like 50 times of use ... instead of a silly and stupid one. We need a law to make this mandatory, as capitalism itself doesn't care, and therefore needs boundaries that are not for sale or up to negotiation - they accept it or leave the game.

Love how cops will ask to see your license and then immediately assume you're actually reaching for a gun instead of the exact thing they're asking for, so then they just shoot you dead and now you need a special baggy because the cops are just paranoid and trigger happy.

In my highschool, before corona there was NEVER any soap in the girls bathrooms. As much as we complained they would never fill them up. It took the school a whole ass global pandemic to realise that we needed soap in the toilets. And constantly told us the importance of washing our hands. Well of course we all wanted to wash our hands thoroughly, but because of you that privilege was taken away.

I know a lot of homeless people and for the ones that actually want to get off the street, it is a good thing to give money to homeless charities, but also giving a dude on the street a fiver when you see them isn't a bad thing either, this is more about keeping them out of the area, keeping it looking nice for the people spending money.

"US Official" and "Oil Oligarch"? Really phrasing that to make it seem sinister. It's Ivy Getty and she married a fashion photographer. The entire way this is phrased - "Not even hiding it any more" - is rhetorical bollocks. What was being hidden in the first place? That a rich family from California knows a California Congressperson?
