Working at a hotel keeps you on your toes. You’ve got a million things to juggle, all while making sure guests are happy. But when your coworkers are the ones causing chaos, it makes a tough job even harder.

That’s exactly what happened in this Reddit story, where a boomer employee spent 15 years making her colleagues’ lives miserable with constant bullying and unreasonable demands. Thankfully, a new worker joined the team and decided to put an end to her nonsense.

Having a job in hospitality, or any role involving lots of people interaction, is notoriously tough. To get a better sense of what it’s really like, Bored Panda spoke with the original poster (OP) of the Reddit story, who has years of experience in the industry.

According to OP, conflicts between hotel employees are usually manageable and not as extreme as what happened with ‘Bessie the Boomer.’ “It’s just basic interpersonal conflict, personalities that don’t blend. The most professional staff can keep those issues aside and be personable,” they explain.

The real challenges often come from dealing with guests. “They can be incredibly entitled, no matter who they are or what they do,” says OP. “Older guests, like ‘boomers,’ may have outdated expectations based on outmoded commercial models. For example, they might become genuinely outraged if a hotel is cash-free.”

Unfortunately, this kind of behavior is becoming increasingly common. A 2022 Harvard Business Review survey revealed that 76% of frontline service workers face rude behavior every month, and 78% believe it’s more prevalent than it was five years ago.

The survey revealed some startling examples of customer rudeness. One retail worker reported that a customer responded to a simple “Good morning” with, “I do not need you for anything. Leave me alone. If I need you, I will call you. You are here to serve, not to talk with me.” In another case, a restaurant visitor described how their sister disrespected a waitress: “She berated a waitress to the point of making her cry. Why? Because the waitress didn’t bring her salad just the way she ordered it.”

Despite this, OP still enjoys their job, especially because it lets them observe people in their most authentic moments. “After 1 am, a strange honesty takes over,” they note. “Between alcohol, substances, stress, and lack of sleep, bluntness becomes the norm. You get to learn about people and who they are from the oddest angles.”

No doubt, this line of work isn’t for everyone. But it certainly makes for some fascinating stories.

People in the comments were happy that ‘Bessie the Boomer’ finally got what she deserved

I think it’s time people stopped this “Boomer” horsesh**t. If you made comments like this based on someone’s gender or race it would be completely unacceptable. This is a story about an unpleasant workplace bully. There are plenty of those around and there always will be. It’s nothing to do with being a “boomer”. I am getting really fed up with this ageist attitude. Millennials and gen x and gen z… just wait til it’s your turn. You won’t like it either.

Especially since at least half the time they’re referring to GenXers as boomers. It’s not only ageist, but erroneous. I saw a late-40s/early-50s women flexing her wanna-be entitlement today at elementary age kids riding their bikes on the sidewalk for a few feet until they could safely get into the bike lane. They and several of the parents kept slinging the “OK Boomer” line at her. I couldn’t help but think, “no, she’s not a boomer you morons. Just an asshat.”

Can we please try to stop using these generation labels? I can't keep track of them and I'm for sure not going to ask people what year they were born. Anyone can be an a*****e.

Please realize that MOST baby boomers are no better and no worse than anyone else. She was just a toxic, lazy, mean person in no. Being a boomer really has no bearing on this. I'm first year GenX (1965), and my parents are boomers (mom 1945, dad 1948). Neither of them ever behaved like that. I realize saying "boomer" conveys a certain picture of how someone acts, but it really paints a bad image for those who have never, and would never, behave in such a way. I hate the thought that someone sees my parents and automatically assumes derogatory things about them. Just say a person is an a*****e and leave it at that.

I'm from the same year as you, and I agree totally! My parents would not have behaved like this in the workplace but I have seen people from Gen X, and younger, being bullies. I also resent that if someone our age does something someone doesn't agree with, we're also labelled a boomer but if they agree with it, we're Gen X. Ridiculous labelling!

    a) "He stays or I go" doesn't actually make sense - surely it should be "He goes or I go"? b) Most "boomers" are retired now (including me, and I'm only just one) c) What's with the OP's username? "PM_ur_SWIMSUIT" - what's going on there? Sounds somewhat dodgy!

If this story was about Missy the Millennial or Gerry the Gen X'er, people would be screaming about how ageist and judgmental it is. It always amazes me how younger people today pride themselves on NOT being judgmental when actually they definitely are. Are you all really dumb enough not to know that bullies come in all age groups? Many of you complain of having been bullied by other kids in school. They weren't boomers! Stop this baloney, you're not covering yourself with glory.
