I own an independent bookstore and receive lots of books that are simply at the end of their lives. Old investment books from before the financial crash, books with cracked binding, or missing pages start to pile up in the corner. So, I decided to be creative and upcycle these books into something fun.

I built a frame out of 2×4’s and plywood to provide a stable base. I added rows of books and used a pneumatic framing nailer to secure the books to the frame and one another. I had to cut books with a miter saw to fill in odd gaps. This was a team effort, and it took over 4 weeks to complete!

The upper ‘rainbow’ section are paperback books arranged and cut into blocks. The colors are from the publishers, and I did not paint them.

I added some books by my favorite authors including Neil Gaiman (well, the store is named after the Sandman Comics), Pierce Brown’s Red Rising series, Andrew Smith’s Ignition (local author), and Kristine Kathryn Rusch.

My name is Violeta and I am an editor here at Bored Panda. I love reading memes for a living. It’s obviously much more than that, but I appreciate the variety of topics, information, and pics I get to see every day and share with the world! Those funny memes really make my day too. Being born in the ’90s in post-Soviet Lithuania speaks more about me than I’d like to admit. I’m still learning about the world and myself, but I do love my friends, traveling, art, and my cat. My favorite fact to share about myself is that I used to hide meatballs in my friend’s pockets at lunch so I could go play outside. I wish all those meatballs could find their way back to me someday.

Aside from these beautiful arches, this is a FANTASTIC independent book store. Folks come from all over SW Florida to patronize this store. It is worth a trip. We are lucky enough to live about 25 mins away and go once a month. See you there!

It looks good and all but ... I don't know how I feel about books being vandalized.

This is beautiful! if I had the chance, I would have loved to have gotten married under this arch. It's a true work of art. The man behind it must have been an engineer, or a mathematics wiz, great at construction, who knows the angels and loads of arches. This is amazing!

It's this or recycling for (toilet) paper. I've gotten rid of loads of unusable old textbooks, worn-out and yellowed old paperbacks, and lots of cookbooks and novels that weren't that good so unsellable & I don't want any friends to waste time on them, ... . Consider it a retirement home for books; after their productive/readable life is over, can they stay here or should they be executed? Your call.

Local shop here puts old or unsold ones in boxes out front marked FREE. Doesn't cut them up.

In two places here. It’s Almost horrific, a sort of book snuff place where books go to die on one hand and a magnificent tribute to the printed word on the other,

I volunteer at a local library, sorting donated books for monthly sales. I love books and I have a lot of them but they're just stacked, printed sheets of paper glued together, no different from a pile of newspapers. Treasure the books you love but recycle the rest.
