Scientists Create Contact Lenses That Allow Wearer To Zoom By Blinking Twice
Scientists at the University of California, San Diego, are testing out an incredible new piece of modern technology – contact lenses that would allow users to zoom in by simply blinking. In a recently published scientific research paper titled “A Biomimetic Soft Lens Controlled by Electrooculographic Signal”, the scientists explained how these new contact lenses differ from some previously developed ones who were either controlled manually or used pre-written programs for close up views.
Scientists at the University of California are working on a new type of contact lens
These new contact lenses would allow users to zoom in just by blinking
They use electrooculographic signals generated by eye movements to control the movement and focal length of the lens, making them unique of its kind.
The lens is controlled by eye movements and double blinking
The lens is controlled via electrodes that mimic the muscles of the eye, thus not interfering with normal eyesight.
Here is the contact lens in action
Currently, the contact lenses are still in the prototype phase
Even though the prototype contact lens looks like a messy bunch of microchips and wires, it’s just a question of time before they become small enough to fit under your eyelids easily.
There’s still a long way to go before these lenses become widely available but it’s amazing to see what modern technology can do
Scientists say this Blade Runner-esque lens has the potential to one day be used in visual prostheses, adjustable glasses, and remotely operated eye vision robotics.

Share on FacebookAnother leap in modern technology and yet three months from now we'll just see an influx of men radically blinking down the street as women pass.
Yes. Men. Because women don't eye people, the saints.
Load More Replies...what if someone is driving and gets something in their eye that makes them double blink for a second on impulse...they would then crash bc they can't see properly.
Only wear driving contacts that don't zoom. Though to be honest they can't even stop proteins building up on the lenses - a far bigger problem.
Load More Replies...I wear glasses, and have had contacts several times in my life. My first thought is what a hellacious headache these lenses would give me. One ill-timed double blink—-which can easily happen if something gets in your eye—-and I can’t see what I need to. The simpler solution is to have LASIK.
Going to be a problem if they get a loose eyelash. :D
