Black Water
Short horror prompt
The one time we decided to go off trail
This just seemed like a normal day of hiking. It was just my father and I. After about 2 miles in the New Hampshire wilderness we wanted to see something off the beaten path. Something few people have ever seen. There have been stories of a river that flows though the valley that on a certain time of day it runs as black as coal as well as being warm to the touch.
The trail is far behind us now. We found the river. We saw its secrets. And it’s secrets saw us. The strangest thing though is that when I close my eyes all I can see, all I can hear, all I can smell is that black water. And standing there is a woman. Pale in the face. She had flowers growing from dead branches upon her head. Eyes white like hard boiled eggs. She watches me. Standing in that river with her mouth opening and closing ever so little. And the only sound I can make out is the water rushing from her mouth.
I hope to be able to close my eyes again sometime soon.
