Forget Coffins – Organic Burial Pods Will Turn Your Loved Ones Into Trees
The idea of coming full circle and returning whence we came from is one that appeals to many of us, regardless of our faith (or lack thereof), and this is an idea captured perfectly by this beautiful new burial method developed in Italy. The Capsula Mundi project by designers Anna Citelli and Raoul Bretzel has developed an organic, biodegradable burial capsule that will turn the deceased’s body into nutrients for a tree that will grow out of their remains.
After being encapsulated in the fetal position, the deceased is buried and either a tree or tree seed is planted above their capsule. The project’s site already has a number of trees to choose from.
The project is currently only a concept because Italian law forbids such burials. If it were allowed to proceed, however, the project’s aim would be to create entire memorial parks full of trees instead of tombstones. And instead of destroying and burying wood for wooden coffins, we would, at the end of our lives, provide sustenance for new trees instead. And indeed, the idea that our loved ones and descendants could visit our tree, care for it and rest in its shade is truly a comforting one.

An Italian company came up with an eco-friendly alternative to coffins
Instead of visiting cemeteries, mourners will be able to visit sacred forests
Each client will be able to choose their favorite tree
The people buried inside the pods will become nutrients for their chosen trees

Share on FacebookI love the idea, it somehow gives you the feeling that your loved one is still there :) way better than being stuck under the ground!
I love it simply because instead of cold hard stone symbolizing the memory of a loved one, you have a beautiful living thing!!!
Load More Replies...As an animist and someone who loves the idea of returning to the Earth instead of becoming embalmed toxic waste, I AM ON BOARD.
Obviously it will look like your loved one. Sheesh!
Load More Replies...Eco burials in ground friendly products (untreated wood/shrouds - no embalming fluids etc) are gaining popularity here, this would fit in!
at last an option that makes sense.I really hate those standard coffins
right! the standard coffins, and all the chemicals in processing the body! or the energy needed for the intense heat to cremate
Load More Replies...I think it is a lovey idea, I have secondary stage 4 incurable breast cancer, which will eventually take me. I love the idea that my body will nurture something tangible that can be seen and touched. I would love to be a Weeping Willow Tree, they are my favourite, they have a mystical fairy like quality. I have fond memories of sitting under one at first school during the summer, for storytime. I am 100% on board.
Would this work if you are being cremated ? I like this ideal instead of an ern
It's a really good Idea, to think that my body should give shade to comming generations...
How beautiful. My mind could rest knowing I am returning to the earth without harming it.
I would be scared that someone will come through and mow all the trees down to build a mall or something on top of it.
WOW, amazing idea! I wouldn't mind turning into a tree one day :3
Is there some sort of petition for this it's an awesome idea considering the situation
My ideal has always been to be just wrapped in some unbleached gauze and laid in the ground with a cedar tree and blueberry bush planted
I'm in! Does anyone know the average human carbon footprint for life v the carbon intake of a tree? See where I'm going with this :)
If this happens then the trees that grow should be protected from being chopped down!!!
This is nothing short of sheer genius meets practicum eventuality. Nothing is more relevant to a sensible passing on a planet with 7+Billion
I think this is a good idea. Save trees and plant more instead. Brilliant!
I have already told all my family to cremate me and dig a deep hole put my ashes into hole and plant a tree on me and i will be part of tree
Wouldn't your bones intertwine with the root system. I could even imagine a skull or femur surfacing after decades of root growth!
I think it's the right way and best way to bury a human body once it expires.
This is great. Only downside is if your loved ones tree dies, then what? It would be traumatic for some.
It's a beautiful, poetic idea but imagine the amount of space our cemeteries would take?! Unless everyone gets to grow a bonzai ;-)
Yes! If the concept will be accepted by those who are in charge, I Believe most everyone would embrace this way of returning to nature!
Love it! I have heard about another company that does it with cremated remains.
This is one of the best concepts ever designed!!! Going back to nature organically…. It just makes so much more sense and feels right. This is what I would absolutely prefer!
I have looked into this however it is your ashes that is placed in a tree, I do not want to be cremated I want a natural burial so that my body can be returned to nature. I wish there was a non-cremation option.
I really love this! Being Indigenous really incapsulates giving back to Mother Earth & our ancestral burial practices…. WOW how awesome would this be if the whole earth made this the norm for burials & making Forrest instead of destroying them. Just beautiful I'm in our ore
I love this idea, being Indigenous really incapsulates my ancestral way of putting back to the earth & our old burial practices… WOW if the whole earth made this the norm in burial practices & forest are being built again instead of being destroyed… I think it's awesome
moi je veux être un saule pleureur comme arbre ça deviens grand et gros et c'est un des plus beau arbres
It is a lovely idea, but I can't help but think of the space required if each body/person had its own tree. Many tree species require quite a spread to grow healthfully (wouldn't want the tree to die!). I like the idea of memorial forests, forests of native trees and shrubs in which remains are buried. You would likely give nourishment to a tree or two, but just as likely to an understory shrub or wild flowers.
I absolutely love this idea. I had always considered the most green way was to be cremated, thus not turning huge swathes of land into cemeteries. This ticks all the boxes for me. Going back to the earth and doing something to help repair the ozone layer and preserving other forests that would otherwise be cut down to turn into coffins. Brilliant idea - I hope it become attainable before my time comes.
Love it...wondering about the legality in the US although I don't really care...am seriously considering
I wonder if it could work in countries where trees are becoming threatened. Perhaps their government could invest in the project hence receive an income from it, employ people to protect it and benefit from more trees being grown. Am I being naive here? Love the idea, I would certainly go for it.
I love it. I wish I have the time to choose for it. I am 66 years old and I'll do it without any doubts. Excellent idea.
The tree nourishes on the skeleton not the entire body. The organs decompose into gasses and what is left of flesh are eaten by bugs and underground insects. The Skelton is what nourishes the ground and grows into a tree. So instead of an entire body , it is actually better to put cremation ashes into a biodegradable capsule.
Need to know where these are available. I've said about a year ago now that I want this.
When I heard about Italy's pods I hoped it would be approved in the US. Has it been? This is how I want my body to be laid to rest. It is the most beautiful-sensible idea to be actually put into use. I have said for years to my daughters I want my body put in the ground and plant a tree planted over me. This is something I absolutely want!
What about the fact that dead bodies are not easily molded into the fetal position due to rigor mortis?
What about the fact that a dead body cannot easily be placed in the fetal position due to rigor mortis?
There is also a person who created a 'mushroom burial suit: https://www.ted.com/talks/jae_rhim_lee?language=en
awesome_I'm in! Does anyone know the carbon footprint of a human v the carbon intake of a tree? You can see where I'm going with this.. :)
Love it and it makes it personal. I think it gives it some kind of intimacy and a very special way to keep your loved one closed.
A Totally Brilliant Idea, I would want this for.my.burial an a small.plaque on.the tree later!!
what if you accidentally get buried alive? How you gonna escape that??
C'est une bonne idee, on continuerait a vivre sous une autre forme .... on pourrait en plus choisir son arbre pour verdir ce monde.....
It's the greatest idea for disposition of our bodies. Let's make it a law! For the pets too. Love the idea of a Sacred Forest! :o)
i love nature and this idea of putting the body as nutrients to grow a tree is wonderful i would certainly love to be buried like this i th
Great idea - also thought that golf courses would make good burial and memorial sites.
Look up 'natural burials, new zealand' -(previous post cut out web address).
I agree. Search for info on existing cemeteries with a similar approach.
wonderful idea...i'd go for it...! one day...thank you, i always said i'd love to do it...in my own special day to go away!...
What happens if hit by a natural disaster trees get destroyed? Sorry, but the dead had been feeding into the globe for ages. I'm not in.
I've always wanted to be buried that way when my time on earth is over ,I love all trees .
Great idea but would there be a way to use the cremation remains instead of the full body? Still don't like bugs and being buried...
I still don't get why burial is a thing at all? What's wrong with cremation and spreading ashes in your family's special place(s)?
I am still not getting why burial is a thing at all? What's wrong with cremation and spreading ashes in a your family's special place?
Cost effective to creamate, put in pods and put the tree over that??? Smaller pods and smaller holes, but the idea on the whole IS good
I think this is a terriffic idea, excep that these are awefully BIG pods and still have to make BIG holes in the ground, would'nt it b more
Smart but sounds like its possible youll have to mourn 2 times when the tree dies or gets sick or whatever. So im out
Since I love my tree's this would be for me, doesn't Germany have a memorial forest?
Omg...please kids...I never want to be in a burial pod or fertilizer for my favorite tree...Thanks
I think it is so neat an how would it feel to sit at a tree that was were your loved one was barred an feel like they were with you.
I like the idea but if i was visiting someone id still like a head stone so i could tell where they are.
I want this for myself when I finally pop it. So meaningful and valuable
Great idea! I want this! Great for the earth and much nicer than a gravestone. We planted trees in memory of our loved ones. This is better.
I wonted to be cremated , so I would not take up valuable space and have a sad place for loved ones to visit. Now I would think about this.
Excellent idea. It more relaxing & enjoyable to be in a forest then among tombstones. Smart & inventive designers..
I love the idea, but what happens to the bones? Will there just be a bunch of skeletons left over? That part freaks me out.
It's great. It would take years to put a plaque on said tree, so how to discern you from the rest? I love it though.
It sounds like a fine idea! Until you get some "nut" next to you!
sounds like a fine idea! Until your tree pod is planted next to some "nut". :)
Kind of like te biodegradable urn idea but without the cremation part. We can give back to the planet, it's a thank you mothernature <3
This could give new resonance to the phrase " the apple did not fall far from the tree "...
I think the idea is great but I'd gave to see a ceremony...the pod is ugly so if it could be present in some elegant way I think it would.
This is a beautiful way to recycle mankind. we should employ this new method on Isis so can be beautify the landscape as we eradicate them.
By far the most creepy thing I've seen so far always messing with the dead when I die I just want to sleep forever stupid ppl
I love the idea of still contributing to the world even in death. I'd love to know if this is available in Australia and the cost of this
I like the idea very much, but what if someone cuts down the tree?? Just asking??
I personally like the idea. I would do this. I would want to be an oak tree.
Could i pick a tree that produces fruit so my loved ones would have a snack after their journey through the sacred forest to visit me
This is an excellent idea. Nothing is put into waste; eco friendly and environmentally viable. After hundred years, our earth is green.
this is a great idea. I would love coming back as part of something living. The Circle of Life
Love the idea -- rather like the eco-pod, but more specifically intended to grow a tree above/out-of it.
Peaceful. Creating sustainability. Body reaching beyond the earth....arms stretched out again toward the sun.
What if the person is too fat to be put in the fetal position? Get a extra extra large pod with an extender?
it would also be good if u could keep family at home in the garden close to your heart and always near
Makes so much more sense than a cemetary. I would like it if there could be a marker on the tree to say who it was, with name & dates.
Like! I would Prefer A Huge Pine Tree, Or The Weeping Willow Tree. I would want a tree, not seed, and some Good fish and cow manure! Trees!
I love it. How would one go about actually creating this. Loved ones could liteally HUG A TREE. Any suggestions? grannyfrog521@aol.com
Sounds like a wonderful alternative, its all about what the customer is searching for anyhow....
I Love this!! What a beautiful and sacred way to honor out people and mother earth!! Thank you! :)
Im very interested in this and trying to find out how much this would cost, & where would these be buried, as cemetries wouldnt allow trees?
trying to find out how much this would cost, also where would you bury these, not all cemetries would allow a tree?
Charming- yeah...but then its much better to plant a lot of trees while you can... better than just one feeding on your rotting flesh
plant trees while you can... more trees are better than just one that is trying to live on your rotting flesh when you die
I'm not sure it sounds great. I want to know more about this.It does have my attention.
Great idea and will makebyou feel b that they live on..Plus trees create oxegen a symbol of life.
I love the idea.It is sustainable and is a symbol,of a life not v dead but still lives on.
I love t j is idea its sustainable and a happy way to remember c a lovef one.
Amazing concept! The idea of choosing your favourite tree and helping to create a beautiful sacred forest where you can visit your loved one
I think it's a great idea.less waste,no more concrete, and in years to come, other generations to came would appreciate those trees
I buried my pet bunny in a garden and planted sunflower seeds through out. The one seed on top of her grew twice as tall!
I think this is a simple yet brilliant idea that means the dead can be useful long after they have departed this realm!
What about the chemicals they pump in your body after you die isn't that toxic?
I love this idea. The traditional idea of dying, death, and funerals always bothered me. This is so much more beautiful.
I really like this idea, give your nutrients back to the earth. Your great niece or nephews can swing upon your branch. Leaving a living leg
This is what i would like when im gone cause i stand tall an is strong So my children remember me, know im their and decorate with ribbons
Love this concept the dead helping the living more trees better Air... but what will happen if the tree fell?
This is by far not the first time something like this has been invented. For instance, the Pequeninos in O.S.Card's /Ender's Game/ stories.
This is by far not the first time this has been proposed. How many of you are familiar with Card's /Ender's Game/ books and the Pequeninos?
I think its brilliant ! New woodlands will be created by those who have passed yet still be alive in a different form. Magic !
What if you are cremated, would they still encapsulate you and do this? So cool. Is it available in America?
What happens if your tree seed doesn't grow or if your tree dies that would suck for a grieving family
Love this and want one for myself when I pass on. Hoping that "tree-hugging" will remind my loved ones of me.
I love The idea! You can take care of the tree, as if you would do for your loved one.
Years later you could make a piece of furniture in honor of the person. A good solution for a sustainable forestry program.
They look like giant Easter eggs gone bad. You'd want to cremate first to get rid of diseases and bones.
Those pods look disgusting and creepy; something out of a sci-fi movie. You can't go around folding dead, stiff people and stuff them into
Instead of the whole body, why not a small pouch of cremated ashes with the tree on top? I think that cocoon is still really big.
At some point family could cut the tree down and have a piece of furniture made in your honor. That way the forest would be manageable.
Love this! I would choose one of the maple trees that turn reddish gold in the fall
This is awesome. Something my husband has been talking about for years. Should have capitalized on it...lol
My question is what if the egg breaks. Will the roots go down into the body moving the bones upward and out of the ground as the tree grows?
Brilliant I wanna be the food for the trees... humans feed on trees all there life’s, it dose feel fair towards nature that she can feed on
Beautiful poetic idea. even in the afterlife, your final act of giving back to mother earth would be to nourish it with life and oxygen.
What happens when the tree gets to big? Cut all the trees down on that section and build apartments on it? And the body's be still in the gr
Stupid idea. What if the tree died, and don't say that can't or won't happen. Then what? start the grieving process again, over a tree?
Splendid idea! One problem tho. What if someone cut the trees? which leads to another question-Wouldn't that be disrespectful?
I think we should bury the dead they way we do now. This is creepy to me or a scam. I do not trust it.
A wonderful idea! To give life in death is more than anyone could ask. I would much rather feed the tree than the maggots.
A novel idea. Can we keep the tree in our own backyard garden?
Where can we get these pods ? My parents would love to do this n so would I. This.is a great idea. Are all the trees in a cemetery setting ?
I really like this idea! But I worry...What if the tree dies? How depressing would that be. But probably not for the deceased ;p
It gives back home for animals oxygen for us and a place that can't get cut down
And then in 100 years they will cut the trees for their homes when the purpose has become meaningless
This is amazing, instead of using up valuable land and wood for cemeteries and coffins as well as other resources, we will be replenishing t
Well i could post a pic here coz thats exactly what i did to my beloved dog of 11yrs..the ornamental plant is growing really good
Just a thought: Trees grow together and their roots make the forest strong by intertwining with their neighbors roots. What could be better?
When I was a teenager, some 50 years ago, I wrote a poem: When I die, Plant a tree, Over me, For that is what, I wish to be. Amen!
Turn me into three trees, maple, spruce and ebony, then in the distant future I will become a viola or cello, oh alright, maybe a violin.
I would like to become three trees, maple, spruce and ebony, then in the distant future become a viola or cello, oh alright, maybe a violin.
I think it's an outstanding idea and wish their were places that would allow this.
I think it's a great idea but I'll bet it costs a fortune, and how do you identify the deceased's tree.
while I've got my inlaws in my thoughts....does the person need to be dead before you can do this to them?
This is amazing. I love the ideal. The only problem would be the government. There would have to be a law first that the trees don't get cut
For years I said I want a fruit tree planted on my coffin instead of soon-dead flowers and a cold tombstone. This capsule is even better.
A brilliant idea - better than people visiting a rock & leave dying flowers.
It seems just as good as the other technique of cremation and pressurizing of loved ones into jewels.
I like the idea in theory, but what if someone cuts me down and turns me into a tacky coffee table?? ;)
Like it in theory, but what if someone cuts me down and turns me into a tacky coffee table???? ;)
I think it's a great idea especially since we are supposedly running out of space for cemeteries!
I love this!! I wonder if you can be any tree, or have to pick from 5 that they have on a pre selected list?
Thank god! A way to leave that is natural, meaningful and beneficial. I can´t wait!
Thank god! A way to leave that is meaningful, natural and beneficial. I can´t wait!
Bottom line it's just not a sustainable concept. There's a list a mile long of reasons why it would be impossible.
They've got a business that probably will never decline because death comes eventually no matter what.
what a marvellous idea,I would rather be of use to the earth once I have gone.
I love the idea of returning to the earth in a useful way, and, what a great way to repopulate the trees.
I like it I have said for a long time we use to much land for the dead. This way a forest of the saints will produce oxygen for the living.
I love this idea. Creating a memorial garden/ woods for our loved ones.
I think this is an absolutely fabulous idea! Let's get this started NOW!☺
Truly amazing idea! Instead of rotting in a concrete tomb inside a metal casket, you be comming full circle with as we've been provide with
I really like the idea. I love trees, they give shade, watching them dance in the breeze so natural and beautiful. :)
It is a perfect idea that gives the peace of the mind transition to the afterlife. If nothing else, I can still live through a tree :)
love the idea, friends and family could visit a gorgeous setting knowing that you were there!
What a lovely idea - to be put into the earth to nourish a growing, living thing, and replace some of the harm your existence has caused...
Very sensitive thought put together beautifully!! Atleast we can make our planet Green!!!! And be around in the purest form of nature :)
Tree is symbol of life... Having a hard time posting on here. So had to do two posts.⬇️ loving this idea, hope it comes to fruition.
Being a native person I do not want chemicals like embalming fluid in my body. I want to nourish the planet, not poison it.
It's a beautiful and mindful idea to give something to the earth when you die , I would do this
Can you get them yet? In Spain they don't allow wicker or cardboard coffins yet.
Interesting and Bio Lodging well for a deceased body.actually we do turn back to dirt.
I love this idea...giving back and the loved ones left can visit a living tree rather then a cold slab.
In many states in the USA this is not going to work as they require a cement or metal Vault for any burial, to avoid contamination of water!
With big trunks many years later could descendants use the trees?
i dont know guys... The idea of that tree is "feeding" from my loved one kinda makes me cringe...
Nice idea. Wonder when (if ever) it would start, & choice of tree? Weeping Cherry Blossiming Willow please!
I think that this is a beautiful way to honor the earth and all that it has given to us. We would giving back fully. I would like more info.
This is an absolutely beautiful idea! I would like more information on this topic.
would be alriight as long as the ground is secure that no one can cut down the trees
Love it! Burial in a coffin is so wasteful, and cremation isn't very attractive, either. This is the way I'd love to return to earth! :-)
really a great idea. ECO FRIENDLY. you can make a landscape around the tree.
I love this idea. Wish it was in the US. What a great gift of lige being given to live on
The Russians did this right after WWII. They had some many dead soldiers it was easier to plant trees over their corpses.
I wonder if they could do a willow tree like in Pocahontas. Lol maybe that's just my inner Disney geek.
incredible, very smart idea, I am all for it, already have my tree picked out ... Jake
Marvelous! I would you subscribe to this new concept in a heartbeat....or lack thereof.
I love it.. I am doing a green burial when I pass.. This is an interesting yet similar concept
I LOVE this. I want instead of cremation. My son just passed. Wish I had say over his remains. He would have chosen this !
I love this idea; that's what I want to become after I die, a tree!
Wow what a great idea! I want to be a tree. I am definitely on board with this great idea myself! I love trees...
Love it so much better than being buried in a coffin, my initial desire when I die is to be cremated but I like this more.
When I was a kid me and my Grandfather would sit under his favorite willow tree. How great would that be to leave this for my Gandchildren.
I've already told my children this is what I want, and where to "plant me"!
personally I prefer cremation, but if the ashes were burried this way I would love it
I LOVE it!!! Way better than cremation I was thinking about!!!
Now that is a new concept! I have already planned for creation but it is an interesting thought.
Loooove the idea, knowing that you can give something to mother earth in return when you die is just AMAZING!
Love the idea. Why not put a seed inside the capsule? and some other seeds??
Love it! A person can still help the environment and add beauty to the surroundings while cleaning the air or making fruit for others to be
Yes, and one can hang ornaments on it, this way the deceased will have his/her own Christmas tree !!!!
I always wanted to grow into a tree. My family could visit, Hug me, generations of my children could climb and play. Eternal love and life!
"Interesting Subject, and concept! - The very 'notion' that one can be offered the 'option' to be 'reincarnated' as an actual living thing!
so how would you feel if someone decided to take the forest for a building etc?
New idea for the western man...any thing new for the aborigines here in south america, this practice have a thousands of years...MARICHIWEU
A lovely way to give back something positive to our world instead of creating more pollution and dangerous chemicals to leach from us.
Wonderful idea. We were given life and now after death, we can give life back to the earth. Sign me up!
I love the idea coz it takes away the sting and the creepiness of the cemetery. Instead, a picnic with the family will occur in the forest.
in my country, we believe that if huge trees have their guardians definitely, ghost literally loved to stay at huge tree
I just love the idea, it's like some part of you continues to live on bringing freshness of air n shade n comfort to those who come to rest.
I love it it would definitely help with lack of trees something we can give back to the earth definitely should be made legal
If you have to be buried, this is a wonderful alternative and it helps the planet.
I think this is a beautiful idea a would prefer this feel like u would be giving something back xx
What do you think the trees in the cemitary are feeding on and are so dam big!
A great idea. We all have been oxygen thieves while we have lived on earth so in death let us give something back to mother nature.
what a wonderful idea, to at last be able to enrich the earth instead of destroying it
brilliant concept would love this , but would it not take everyone in the world to do this to ,help save the planet, maybe making compulsery
COMPLETELY PERFECT! Definitely would want to do this for myself and my family. BRILLIANT!
I've been on board. I actually came up with the idea at the same time or before these people. Ugh. I should start copyrighting/patenting.
Amazing idea! I always wanted to be burried in the forest, now i can become a part of the forest itself!! AWESOME!
Still stuck underground and runs th risk of being destroyed in human error or malice or weather. BUT, still a better than put in cement
this isn't a new idea.. here you can also bury your pets in a bio urn https://urnabios.com/
that's great just drop the "sacred" bit. we should respect life, including plants, without any mumbo jumbo stuff.
I think it's a great idea, instead of taking up space, we are helping the environment
I think it's a beautiful idea, instead of taking up space, we need, we are helping the environment
what if they move your coffin for a parking lot' the tree will die one day but really who will care after 100 years
Load More Replies...I would love to be a nutrient towards the future. I sincerely hope this takes off!!!
I would really like to be a part of this idea as a nutrient for the future!
Love this. See A Book About Death: http://abookaboutdeatharchive.blogspot.com/
Awesome idea and so fitting for so many of us. Not only do we nourish the tree, the tree then cleans the air and provides oxygen ;)
I think it's fantastic idea if there is a way to recognize which tree belong to whom^^ I'll buy it!
pick a tree that lives a long time so in a hundred years when no one cares anymore and the tree dies your history and no tree to remember
Load More Replies...Great idea, but if a man speaks in the middle of this forest and there is no (living) woman to hear him, would he still be wrong?
You could embed an rfid tag into the tree - 10m range - encapsulated in amber so non-toxic and they're passive - so no battery needed.
too hipster and unsafe. And would feel like cannibalism if the person ends up in a fruit tree.
you dont think the tree roots in a grave yard aint in the coffin
Load More Replies...What a cool idea. I don't mind my tree being cut down, just make something useful. Hope it's more it's more than firewood :)
you might end up being cremated?! firewood? get it?
Load More Replies...sounds like a sci-fi...gettin a funny feelin about this./ right off the bat
You do realise if you had any experience with dead bodies you would in most cases have to break and snap them to fit..
That would totally defeat the purpose! You're suposed to be nutrients for the tree!
Load More Replies...I love the idea, it somehow gives you the feeling that your loved one is still there :) way better than being stuck under the ground!
I love it simply because instead of cold hard stone symbolizing the memory of a loved one, you have a beautiful living thing!!!
