Interestingly, we don't know who invented the sandwich, but it has existed in some form or another for thousands of years.
One of the earliest known sandwich connoisseurs was Hillel the Elder, a rabbi and scholar who was born in Babylon and lived in Jerusalem during the first century B.C.
The Haggadah, a Jewish text read during the annual Passover Seder, says that Hillel made sandwiches using Paschal lamb, bitter herbs and unleavened matzoh bread. In Jewish tradition, during the Seder dinner, participants remember this by creating their own matzoh sandwiches.

Apparently Dubliner is a cheese made by Kerrygold. I had to look it up. Hard to imagine a cheese you've never tasted. Would anyone like to give us a description?

However, the name was adopted only in the 18th century because of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. Some sources claim that he had sliced meat and bread brought to him at the gaming table on one occasion so that he could continue to play as he ate.
But it seems more likely that he ate these sandwiches as he worked at his desk and/or that the world became aware of them when he requested them in London society.

His title lent the preparation cachet, and soon it was fashionable to serve sandwiches in many parts of Europe, with the word making its way into the French language.
Since then, the sandwich has been incorporated into virtually every cuisine of the West by virtue of its simplicity of preparation, portability, and endless variety; qualities that become evident as you scroll through this subreddit.

We managed to get in touch with the moderators of 'Eat Sandwiches,' and they were kind enough to further introduce us to their online community.
"This subreddit is pretty relaxed, and we don't have to constantly police it," the team told Bored Panda. "Rarely, people get passionate about their food and start fighting, but not often."

The moderators said that all sandwiches are welcome on the subreddit, so determining what makes a good one is subjective and varies among the members.
They also humorously added the phrase "upvotes go brrr," implying that the community expresses its preferences through upvoting posts rather than a serious discussion on which recipes are superior to others.

Patty Melt From A Local Joint
Since I developed a gluten sensitivity, I have been trying to find decent substitutes for the baked goods I have loved my entire life. Gluten free bread ends up being a quest to just find the LEAST bad tasting brand. Even homemade GF bread can taste bad or crumble too easily. The one that’s OK now for me only comes in small slices—-like only about twice the size of those tiny party sandwich loaves they sell in the deli section of a grocery store. Way smaller than a normal loaf. And hamburger rolls? You can F*****g forget finding a decent substitute. They taste weird, they’re also way too small for an average hamburger, and they soak up juices and just disintegrate, so you end up holding the burger instead of the bun. So I make patty melts instead of burgers, as the GF bread, though small, can accommodate a burger and does not disintegrate or crumble. Same thing, just different bread.

Not to eat as is. To look at in a photo- it’s gorgeous. I would have to disassemble it and remake it smaller. For sure
Load More Replies...Most of these look like at least two meals, if not three. If I lived in the US, I would be the size of a house. I don't know how you all manage to hold off!
Many of us share or only eat part of it at one time. There are some that eat the whole thing at once, but much of the time when you see those crazy portions we are not eating it all in one sitting.
Load More Replies...This was one of the best sandwiches I ever made: https://imgur.com/gallery/c9u1g0c
For homemade, I prefer simple. Either tomatoes and basil (or pesto) from our own garden with mozzarella (I sometimes add aragula or parmesan) or guacamole & fried egg (sometimes add bacon). I also like a sharp cheese and paprika or a classic ham sandwich with pickles, cheese and maybe some egg. I prefer to have only a few, high quality ingredients and let the shine. Wouldn't mind buying one of those overstuffed ones, but if I make them myself, I prefer simple ones.
I could never learn how to eat these overstuffed creations without ingredients falling out and my face getting dirty. Must be a super-human skill that I lack :D
This post is heaven on earth!!!! :d the pastrami one. I'd give an arm up for it yum. And the BLT...
I'm too hungry to read this with nothing near as satisfying in my house
I didn't see one sandwich from Mother's or the City Grocery in New Orleans
My favorite sandwich: White toast, American cheese, hard salami, sliced hard-boiled egg, another piece of toasted white bread.
In addition to my BLT sliders with cilantro aioli, I make Italian Grinders: pepperoni, Genoa salami, black forest ham, Provolone, lettuce, tomato & peppers on a sliced Italian roll with balsamic vinaigrette instead of mayo. Heat the meat between paper towels in the microwave and then put the meat on one side of the (dressing spread, but not too much) roll and the cheese on the other and broil until the cheese bubbles. Add the rest. My other go to is a good 1/2 inch thick sliced sourdough with apricot jam and extra sharp cheddar cheese grilled, served with tomato soup. My husband absolutely loves all of them.
I've been looking for projects to do on my smoker this winter. I think pastrami is a definite must do.
I shouldn't have looked at this right before supper! Now I'm drooling!
