50 Times ‘Choosing Beggars’ Got A Harsh Yet Satisfying Reality Check (Best Of All Time)
Interview With ExpertImagine getting a free ride, then telling your driver to get a more comfortable car because theirs is too old. While most of us would be grateful for the gesture, some people may see this act of generosity as an opportunity to demand more, and more, and more. Enter Choosing Beggars, a subreddit dedicated to showcasing ungrateful attitudes and shameless entitlement.
Avid Bored Panda readers might remember that we've covered the community a few times already, but with 2.6 million members, it's so active that one can easily get lost in its content. So, we decided to put together a collection of its funniest and most infuriating posts of all time.

A Brilliant Way To Deal With "Influencers"
To gain a better understanding of these interactions, we got in touch with Dr. Steven Stosny, founder of Compassion Power in suburban Washington, DC, and author of several books on improving relationships.
"There are two major types of entitlement," he told Bored Panda.
"In the first, the entitled feel superior. If not acknowledged as having superior rights and privileges, they may feel inferior. Superiority and inferiority are opposite sides of the same coin."
"The second type is compensatory. Those who suffer from it see themselves as victims of unfair treatment and therefore entitled to special privileges as compensation. 'It's so hard being me. I shouldn't have to wait in line too.'"

As you can see from the pictures, we can run into entitled people at school, work, and other areas of everyday life. Researchers Emily Zitek and Alexander Jordan studied the behavior and published their findings in Social Psychological and Personality Science.
All in all, Zitek and Jordan conducted six experiments. They first tested how 1,259 individuals would behave during a basic word search task where it was essential to follow instructions. The researchers found that those with a high sense of entitlement were less likely to comply with the given directions.
From there, they tested different scenarios to see whether punishment, framing the task as optional, or reducing the perceived personal cost would lead them to comply. None of these tactics worked.
Entitled people do not follow instructions because they would rather take a loss themselves than agree to something they perceive to be unfair to them, the researchers concluded.

Exactly! My tax adviser can do my taxes in 20 minutes and have it done perfectly. Someone asked me why I pay him so much for 20 minutes of work, and I told them he can do it in 20 minutes because he'd been doing it for decades. I'd probably spend hours and still make mistakes.

So what do we do when we run into these people?
Stosny, author of Living and Loving After Betrayal and How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It, said that one of the best strategies is to "ignore their sense of entitlement and act according to your own sense of fairness."
However, if you do find yourselves in a conflict with them, try not to take their coping mechanisms personally.
Choosing Beggar
Two years ago I saw that guy with the gas can begging for money. Tried to give him four dollars, but he said he doesn’t take anything less than five. After that I saw him there everyday for months. Turns out he’s a fraud with a new Jeep and a nice house. Been following him with this sign since.
Sadly, I know someone (friend of a friend) who does something similar. Her husband has a really high paying job in a local manufacturing facility, he's been there for decades so he's the top tier of pay. He has the new car, she keeps the old car, she wears old clothes and then goes around to the food banks and brings home grocery bags full of food and think she's really smart for getting free groceries. She justifies it because twice a year the plant has a shutdown for 2 weeks, I believe the employees are even compensated for the time that they're not there, but she tells everyone that her husband's out of work. Technically it's true he's not working. But that's the lie that she uses to justify why she can rob the food banks 52 weeks a year. I'm sorry to say that I'm not sorry that this lady recently passed away.
2 weeks a year with compensation? Sounds something like a vacation or PTO (Paid Time Off)?
Load More Replies...That's a lot of dedication to follow this guy around for 2 years
Well, I don't give anything more than four.
Load More Replies...Some years ago a well dressed guy approached me on the street and told me his bank accounts were just hacked/emptied and needed some change to go home and try and solve the problem with the bank. I gave him some change and went on my way. The next day I saw him approach another guy and told him the same story. As*hole.
I had something similar happen to me. As my sister and I were leaving a store, a nicely dressed man near a car with its hood up looked visibly upset and said he would be late for an interview and if we could spare some money so he could catch a cab. He said he had a friend coming by for the car, but he couldn't wait. We gave him some money. A few weeks later as I was leaving another store, I saw him again. I recognized the tie he was wearing and he had the same body shape. He was pulling the same scam. I told him I recognized him and I would be telling on him. He tried to argue it wasn't him, but I never saw him again in the area.
People I’ve been in rehab with ran scams like that. One guy would put on a suit, go downtown, and tell people he had a job interview and accidentally left his wallet at home, so if you could please help him out with some money for train fare…
Load More Replies...This is why several cities where I live are starting to hand out tickets to people who give money to these people. They are having a hard time stopping the beggars so now they are targeting the people that give out the money. Years ago police arrested a beggar only to find out he had almost $1 million dollars in the bank....... most of these people are scamming people!
One example equals "most." Your anecdata are compelling.
Load More Replies...The handful of people like this who are out there begging under false pretenses make the general public suspicious of anyone asking for help, and it’s infuriating. My policy is to give if I can. I would rather risk the “wrong” person get money they don’t need, than the “right” person missing money they very much do need to survive.
I don't give cash, but I'll buy them some food.
Load More Replies...Where I used to work, we had someone similar work the same corner for years. One day, one of the guys followed him when he left. Got into a brand new Cadillac. This guy had a be pulling in almost six figures a year, all tax-free. And to think I went to college for a great paying job.
We have one of those in Houston. He's called the Gas Can Man. He even has a facebook page so people can tag his location. He often times gets really angry (especially with women) and will rant and rave and sometimes even damages your car. He was gone for a while (Pretty sure he got arrested) but now he's back!
We found out when the beggar in my hometown died, he was filthy rich. We had only one beggar.
I knew a woman in San Francisco that dressed her and her baby in raggedy clothes and would panhandle at intersections in the rougher areas of the city. She lived w/ 2 other people in a rented house in the Sunset District. She wanted money to fund her lifestyle and tie dying but didn't want to work. She boasted to me of the money she would make and people would also give her some groceries and stuff.
The whole "all homeless people are actually frauds who own expensive cars" trope is one pushed by right wingers and does a lot of damage to actual homeless people.
I'm pretty sure nothing in this post said anything about all homeless people being frauds.
Load More Replies...The flip side; I used to do food distribution for the food about to go off date but given in good time; I covered 30+ miles to get the food to various homes and If I needed bought more ice for the job to keep it fresh. We brought food to the sort of people who, even if struggling, would never ask for help, but would 'help us out' if we said we had an overabundance and could they possibly... Then the 'food bank' took over, took all the food to it's counting house and let it rot* before distribution. We used to take the flowers to the convalescent homes too, to the delight of so many elderly people. 'food bank' let those rot too. I would have continued the flower part just to see those faces light up, but no, they wouldn't let us. One of my special 'flower people' died soon after..
My friend went on a trip with a colleague and came back round-eyed. When they had to leave, the colleague packed not only all the small bottles of shampoo and lotion, but also all the toilet paper there was. Colleague's husband worked in a huge oil company on a high position, they were very well off.

If that guy is going to follow a professional grifter with that sign, he'd be doing more good if he trailed a certain politician.
I don't know man pettiness of that level can be extremely fun. Plus he is doing a public service. There are entire YouTube channels dedicated to hunting scammers. Especially those that scam call the elderly!
Load More Replies...Yeah, well, nobody listens when we say the same thing about Trump soooo.....good luck, guy. Godspeed. Being a lying narcissist is apparently no longer a reason to fault someone.
This Guy Gets It
I actually had to tell a potential customer this the other day. It took me years to learn how to make a particular item, I sell them for $100, other people sell something similar for $500, this person's asking if I'll sell it for 10 because it's expensive. I said no, and suggested that they take a screenshot of the item, print it, and put the picture in their collection until they can afford to purchase it for real. (And if that sounds like I'm being sarcastic I'm not because that's what I used to do with my collections, print out photos of the items I was missing and just put the photos in my display case until I could afford to get the real thing)

"Confronting them or arguing with them creates pointless power struggles, which are likely to increase their sense of entitlement," Stosny added.

In professional environments, Zitek and Jordan — the authors of the aforementioned study — advise framing instructions to the entitled in ways that make them seem fairer or more legitimate. (Making sure they're satisfied could help operations run smoothly, at least for the time being.)
The authors offered another tip: "If the instructions come from an in-group member such as a peer instead of from an authority figure, perhaps entitled individuals would be more likely to view the instructions as fair and therefore follow them."

It wouldn't be so bad if people were offering a labor trade. There's a couple of local tradesmen in my area-one is a plumber, the other an HVAC. The owners both own their own homes and at least one rental property each. They do work on each other's properties for free.
Its Always The Christmas Excuses
This just makes me laugh and then know not to take them seriously. I went to Disney World during the holidays and was in a Disney Collector group for my city on fb. Saw a lady asking for someone to pick up this large plushie. I didn't check any bags so space was limited but I contacted her I can pick it up for price+taxes+small fee. She was very nice and really happy. Got home and got super sick, couldn't unpack. I told her I'll leave the plush outside my door and she put money under mat cause I was too sick to interact. After, she messaged me about a spot on the plush. No idea if it was on there before or after. It wasn't bad, easily washed. She demanded money back, how I ruined Christmas, blah blah. She even tried to compare illnesses? I don't know, she flipped. I told her I wasn't a personal shopper (I said this many times while planning tge pick up) or business, I'm not refunding money. It was the most crazy situation. Never going to offer to do that again.

As a vocalist, I FEEL this. If you want someone to sing for free at your event, ask aunt Lydia or your friend's thirteen year old aspiring diva. They'd love the exposure. But, if you want professional musicians, you need to be willing to compensate them for their time—and not just the time they spend at your gig! When you hire a professional, you're paying for the thousands upon thousands of hours and dollars they spent learning how to perform at a high level, and you're probably getting a better deal than us! Most of us are so obsessed with music that, if we could perform for free and not starve, we absolutely would. Alas, we would starve and I'd rather not do that.

I had a friend at work who painted and I thought it would be awesome to get a painting of our cats to give to my wife for her birthday. I asked my friend if she would do it and asked her how much. She gave me a price that I thought was low, which I said, but we kept it there. I never asked for a discount or anything. You want someone to work for you? You pay them.
Right on. I hired a young artist to paint a mannequin for a book cover. Her price was low, so I 'tipped' her an extra $40 and a box of paints.
