People have the best knowledge of what they have experienced and to be more aware of what is going on outside their life’s bubble, they have to interact with people who are different from them and to actively search for that information.

Otherwise, they might make themselves oblivious and out of touch with reality, which could make them look stupid in front of others. Ignorance is not bad in itself as it is impossible to know everything, but sometimes it is hard to believe how certain knowledge has not reached a person.

Not realizing that there are people who can’t afford a house or having gaps in general education are some things Redditors considered to be common knowledge that doesn’t belong just to a single society group, but they were wrong and told some funny and frustrating stories answering the question “What did somebody say that made you think: ‘This person is out of touch with reality?’”

40 Things People Said That Indicated They Don’t Realize How The World Really Works, As Shared In This Online Community I’m a nanny and I’ve worked for some rich clients. Old money. These people know nothing about reality.

The best one I heard was this family I was working 12 hour days for. Good pay, terrible schedule. At one point I was bouncing their baby on my knee and the Mom goes “Being a mom isn’t that hard. I don’t know why other women complain about it so much”.

While her nanny is literally caring for the baby.

40 Things People Said That Indicated They Don’t Realize How The World Really Works, As Shared In This Online Community Pretty much any time I see someone yelling at a Starbucks or other service employee. They come into a crowded shop, wave their big $5 bill around like a high roller, then yell at a 16 year old for making their coffee incorrectly. Lame. If you find yourself to be one of the people yelling at service workers, fix your own problems before telling other people what to do.

Why should they? That kind of attitude has always worked, so why change now? When I became a manager in retail at a theme park, I was finally able to get revenge on those assholes. And I will take up for any service worker getting abused.

My friend at the time that lived a very privileged lifestyle, $200-300+ weekly weekend dinners with the family, timeshares over the place, skiing and snowboarding trips, etc. She was like why would anyone want to live in these apartments? I would never

My sister taught 6th grade English. More than one parent was required to sit in on their kid's classes. The kids still acted up because their parents refused to hold them accountable. The most common comment from the parents, and I use that word lightly, "We can't control him/her." When it came to the report cards, and the kids failed, they would storm in yelling that it just had to be the teacher's fault. Sure it is. No homework was turned in, every test failed. Yep, it's definitely the teacher's fault.

Honestly, the PA probably just saw diabetes in the chart & asked out of reflex. Type II is more common and some people do recover from it. My husband did it by losing 80 pounds and eating better. Type I diabetics cannot do that.

Me too. I've been a Type 1 diabetic for 25 years and I also have gastroparesis, which is neuropathy of the stomach due to damage of the vagus nerve, and the number of nurses that have told me "but you only weigh 128 lbs, we're you overweight at one time and losing weight just didn't help get rid of your diabetes?". Ummm, my question to them was "how did you get through nursing school if you don't understand the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes?" SMH

I've been type 1 for 32 years. Recently a personal trainer told me it was my bad life choices that caused it, meaning I must have been eating too much junk food. I've always eaten healthy foods. I've never been over weight and I run every day. My Endocrinologist laughed and said that's how they make their money...by telling people they can cure it by curing bad habits.

God yes. Being a type 1 and NO ONE understanding what that means. "Well you should really be eating more fruits and vegetables." That's not how that works. I mean yeah, we should all eat better. But those fruits you're shoving at me still are loaded with sugar. "Yeah but it's fruit sugar so it won't hurt you." Fruit sugar is fructose. I assure you, my body can't process ANY kind of sugar without a shot of insulin. "You just need to exercise more." Again, that's not how this works. I've been a type 1 for 29 years. Believe me I know what I'm doing. And having to constantly go back to the doctor for the same prescription for the same medicine I've been taking for over a decade. As though in 6 months I'm magically going to cure myself. God forbid if you're schedule is just to busy to get in to the doctor for a refill and your prescription runs out. "Well we really need to do some blood work before we refill it." Seriously?!

I agree with you on this inconvenience. Being a diabetic shouldn't require a doctor's appointment every time you fill your prescription. If you aren't experiencing any unusual symptoms that you aren't familiar with, then schedule a doctor's appointment. Since Diabetes is a chronic illness and expensive, every opportunity should be afforded to lesson the stress in your life that you already deal with on a day to day basis. If it were me I would sit down with my doctor and tell him that unless it's not an emergency, then I only want an appointment every six months, and tell him you have enough knowledge of this disease to know when its necessary to seek treatment or bloodwork. Otherwise I would seek another doctor.

I am slightly overweight and was diagnosed type 2 last week. I won't be telling many people due to this judgement. Why is it when people hear the word "diabetes" suddenly, they are a doctor? My mom has type 2, as well. She has had it for years.

My husband is 55 and in multiple organ failure because of diabetes. He has been diabetic since 12 years old. No insulin output. He is blind in one eye, amputated leg, gastroparesis, kidney and heart failure, liver damage and now has Covid from being in the hospital. Plus he keeps getting septic because he broke his other femur in 3 places and is bed bound. People have no idea how devastating it is not just for the patient but also the care giver cluding medical professionals. If you don't have a lot of money expect no help even with insurance. That is my experience and I am not alone in this according to many in the health field. I am now unemployed because I had to resign my teaching job of 23 years to care for him. It has been a constant fight. I cannot count how many times I had to explain to a nurse or doctor how to care for my husband. Saying someone is diabetic is like saying a person is human. Every case is vastly different. P.S. Nothing can ever prepare you to lose the ones you love. Even when you know it's coming soon. At the very least our country could have a system that helps support caring for disabled and aging. I have worked since I was 15 and contributed to society positively a little help would not be amiss.

It's not just diabetes. Many clinicians, let alone laypeople, show their lack of education by suggesting many diseases that have an unknown etiology are induced from lifestyle choices. An MD, DO, or RN after a name doesn't mean they know everything or that what they do "know" is correct and current. Sometimes it's the patient who learns more about the condition than the clinicians.

A question that probably some of you are thinking of if you’re totally into that world, which I find to be very interesting. So, supposedly we hit the body with a tremendous, whether it’s ultraviolet or just very powerful light, and I think you said that hasn’t been checked, but you’re going to test it. And then I said supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. (To Bryan) And I think you said you’re going to test that, too. Sounds interesting, right?" He continued. "And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that, so that you’re going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me. So, we’ll see, but the whole concept of the light, the way it kills it in one minut

I know someone that was diabetic according to their doctor. They had all the issues that come with it. They lost a bunch of weight, the doc says they aren't diabetic anymore BUT they have massive kidney damage from it happening to begin with. It was medication that made the person gain weight. I'm type II. People don't realize the changes you have to make to accommodate your disease. You have to be careful with your feet, no running barefoot. A foot wound can cause big trouble. Make sure you get your eyes examined. Checking your sugar all day (try that at work or in a restaurant). Give yourself an insulin shot and hope it wasn't too much or not enough. Having diabetes isn't just a "don't eat too much sugar" kind of thing.

Type 2 diabetes isn't necessarily caused by eating too much sugar or overeating in general. There appears to be a genetic component as it runs in families. My husband developed it even though he wasn't overweight and didn't have a particular sweet tooth. I don't have it even though I admit to eating way too much sugar my entire life. I'm in my 60s now but none of my relatives have diabetes either whereas many in my husband's family have type 2. Separately they are now studying to see if people become obese because they are developing diabetes rather than the correlation that we have assumed that they develop diabetes because they are obese.

The only thing I don't like about this (As a type 1 diabetic) is the term incurable. We need a cure, this b******t has been around WAY TOO F*****G LONG. That cure needs to be uncovered and yes I said I f*****g covered. Because (though I don't consider myself a conspiracy theorist), it was found back in the 80s. I think insulin companies covered that s**t. And they need to be put in prison for covering it up. And my most petty comment I save for last. I guess we should assume you’re not as ignorant as your comment and you just made a mistake. I’m sure you meant to say type 2 diabetes is the most common and usually linked to obesity. Therefore, perhaps you’re blaming sugar for the cause of the obesity even if that’s not accurate

True, you don't cure type 1 diabetes. But, you can always use better diet (low carb high protein breakfast, divide up heavy meals into smaller ones), change sleeping habits (no-no to after meal nap) and exercising habit (walk 30min-1hr /day), try some herbal teas, etc. My mom when to a camp for diabetic control and got much better (because of the support there). She lives off of insulin completely towards the end. But then she stopped and got worse again after got back (she also has recurring cancer so it's much harder for her to practice something for long). I know it's hard, but many of these practice actually works, please try harder, and please help others too.

It’s amazing the people that sujested the idea of drinking bleach are the ones the made the idea up. By taking what someone else said and making it sound like they said something else. In fact they probably never even heard exactly what that person said because they where told by someone else what they said . That’s how out of touch people are when someone says hate this person they don’t even check it out for themselves.

This bothers me sooooooo much. Opinions are not facts. Facts are not opinions. You are entitled to the opinion that Nickelback is a good band. You are even entitled to the opinion that certain Presidents/Prime Ministers are good/bad at their jobs because you can narrow your opinion down to very slim frames of reference (BoJo *was* the right guy to get Brexit done (unfortunately)). But you do NOT get to opine on whether the Earth is flat or whether vaccines work effectively.

American "Chinese" food is good.. some places are better than others. But nothing compares to real Chinese food. My brothers fiancé is from China and her family always has big dinner parties and OMFG... I never knew that American Chinese food wasn't actual Chinese food until I ate at their house. I'm just angry that there aren't any authentic places in the US because it's so much better than what is being sold here. I don't really remember some of the dishes they made. I just remember her mother lecturing us about how Americans ruined Asian cuisines and how she's on a mission to correct this atrocity! Oh and her red bean cakes and moon cakes were amazing! I had never had Chinese desserts before. I think she made some kind of mango pudding too one time that ruined all pudding for me. Nothing compares now.

40 Things People Said That Indicated They Don’t Realize How The World Really Works, As Shared In This Online Community I was involved in a nonprofit for women in my last city maybe 2 years back. My ex (we were 27 at the time) was from a rich area of the state, and the mean income for this area was $31k. A teacher talked about how 500+ kids in her school were homeless, abs how seniors would pool their money together to get a hotel for days or weeks at a time.

I remember telling my ex about it, and how awful that’s gotta be to be 17 and living with 10 others in a hotel. He said “they’re stupid. If they had any brains, they’d buy a house so they could get equity; the hotel is just them throwing their money away and not getting anything from it.” He was 100% stuck that these 17 year olds, with no addresses, who are MINORS, can apply and qualify for a mortgage. I fussed at him and don’t regret it, because he is so out of touch with reality. Eventually he went on months later to say he talks down about other people and acts like he’s better than everyone because he is better than everyone.

Edit to add: to clarify, he suggested the high schoolers should all buy a house, not my organization. Household income was about 10k higher than individual. His parents were loaded, so he never had to really pay for anything until after college, and even then he didn’t have to pay for housing for the first 3 years of his career, and even still, 95% of his (nice) furniture and everything was given to him. It’s very easy to brag about your 401k when you NEVER had to allocate money towards rent, loans, etc.

Lol, like to live? What's the difference in $2k or $20k in debt when you know you'll only ever be paying back $0?

It's kind of liberating when you accept that you'll always be in debt. I'm getting a MA and buying a house. I'll die in debt. Good luck collecting the money then.

The Illuminati is cool. They have a recipe for caramel-less Twixes.

40 Things People Said That Indicated They Don’t Realize How The World Really Works, As Shared In This Online Community My fiance is a doctor, I'm an engineer her and I grew up VERY blue collar. We still have tons of student debt to pay off before we can reap the benefits of a good salary.

Her friend, a doctor who was a resident when she was in med school, was talking to us about the new house she bought, and kept asking us when we planned on moving out of our s****y apartment and getting a nice big town house. She couldn't comprehend that unlike her, our parents aren't rich, and they can't buy a house for us in CASH, and let us pay them back interest free.

I love her to death, she's a sweet friend we have known for a long time. She has done so much for us in terms of friendship and emotional support. But her mom was a successful surgeon, her dad retired early after selling his successful business.

There are poor people in the world who cannot for the life of them imagine what the life of a rich person is, and there are rich people in the world who have never, ever had to be confronted with what a poor person's life is like. They are surrounded their whole lives with people like them, and they really don't have a clue that there is anything else.

40 Things People Said That Indicated They Don’t Realize How The World Really Works, As Shared In This Online Community Had a girl ask what happened to the Mongolians in history class. She said “there’s not like a present day Mongolia or anything”. She sat under the ten foot wide world map, Mongolia was about two feet above her head.

To paraphrase, this person said that in order to end the Pandemic, we have to ransack medical facilities and attack media outlets.

I will personally airdrop Syrians onto your store's parking lot, just to piss you right off. I'm gonna get my engineers to build a Muslamic Ray Gun, so i can shoot you with it and give you Lumbago.
