Beelitz Heilstätten, situated in the town of Beelitz, Germany is just a stone throw away from Berlin yet seems like two total worlds apart. Built in WWI, and spread across over 200 acres in the woods of the town of Beelitz, this hospital turned sanatorium is on many to-do lists of urbex explorers, tourists and locals alike.
Hitler himself was treated there! Nowadays, its ghostly demeanour and atmosphere attract movie sets from around the world – a scene from The Pianist (2002) was filmed there.
Beelitz Heilstätten has also a not so glamorous side to it – there have been many documented killings over the past decades. It is known that the serial killer Wolfgang Schmidt brutally murdered over 8 people during 1989-1991, not to mention the many models that went missing after photo-shoots in the sanatorium’s premises.
