People Are Applauding How This Bar Dealt With Someone Spiking A Woman’s Drink

Spiked drinks are extremely dangerous. Women who have fallen victim to it often share similar horrifying experiences: they ordered a drink at a bar, blacked out, and woke up sick and numb, or worse.

Luckily, some establishments understand the implications that something like this might have on a person’s entire life and take extra steps to prevent it.

A few days ago, Reddit user xXSlimi_Gacha009 posted a question to the platform, asking, “Bartenders of Reddit, what was the weirdest/craziest thing you have overheard while making someone’s drink?” Their post immediately went viral, receiving plenty of insightful answers. But one stood out in particular.

Even though they were not working behind the bar, Pinkyfitts shared a story from a time they were really impressed by the way the staff handled a guy putting something in a girl’s drink.

Image credits: cottonbro (not the actual photo)

This was the only time Pinkyfitts has been in a bar or restaurant when someone reported a drink being spiked (that they know of). “The bar is a very old bar in New Orleans, it’s a music venue/bar,” the Reddit user told Bored Panda. “It’s loud and hot. It has a ticket entrance, and has some pretty good bands. It’s well known, called Tipitina’s. I have been going there since the late 1980s, so already had an impression of the place. Typical non-French Quarter music venue/bar, more local than touristy. It’s not fancy, but has great music and is usually crowded.”

This particular evening took place in 2007 or 2008, not long after Hurricane Katrina. Whether such actions were routine for them or not, Pinkyfitts doesn’t know, it only happened once when he was there.

“The request to discard drinks with free replacements applied to women only,” Pikyfitts said. “There was no discussion of that but it seemed assumed that they were the ones at risk. I don’t remember any complaints, but I was just a guy in the bar, not working there.”

“Roofies or date rape drugs seemed to be a topic in the news at the time. My impression, having no other reference point, was that this was like any other food/drink business when their product is contaminated. They recall and replace it. You hear about massive recalls of beef or produce, or whatnot. It seemed like that.”

Pinkyfitts recalls no complaints and even some cheering and light applause at the time the manager made the announcement.

“The bar did not get less crowded, but then there was a charge to get in, and it was clear the band was going to restart, so that may have played a big role.”

“I could not tell which woman’s drink was involved, or which man was suspect as I didn’t see who the witness pointed at,” Pinkyfitts explained. “I don’t know if the police were called or a confrontation with the involved people, but that could have easily been out on the sidewalk.”

After a pause, the band restarted and that was that.

The awesome thing is that there are many people in the hospitality industry that care. Kate Gerwin’s 2016 initiative at Bismarck, N.D., bar Lüft is an excellent example of this. “Bismarck has a really big drink-drugging problem,” Gerwin told Liquor.com. Turns out, the community had been dealing with numerous cases of drug-facilitated sexual assault.

In an attempt to put an end to this, Gerwin’s team decided to place a “Friends”-themed sign in the bathroom, instructing patrons to ask for Rachel at the bar if they were feeling uncomfortable or found themselves in danger. The idea was inspired by Bartenders Against Sexual Assault, a community organization formed to help protect the industry and its patrons from date rape and other related crimes using resources and education.

But even small, individual acts can make a huge difference. For example, if a bartender knows the symptoms of date rape drugs (feeling drunk despite having little or no alcohol, feeling confused or disoriented, being unable to remember simple things, etc), they can do something about it.

“Make an excuse to take the drink away from the guest—’Oops, looks like you’ve got a little fruit fly in there; let me make you another one’—and set it aside in case it needs to be tested later,” Jenn Tosatto, the bar manager at Mission Taco Joint in Kansas City, Mo., said. “That way, [you’ll have] time to investigate, and if it was truly nothing, no harm, no foul. But if it was something, the drink is out of their hands.”

Date rape is never the victim’s fault but many of them feel guilty or ashamed. That guilt can prevent them from seeking medical care or reaching out for support, so it’s really, really important to be there for them.

I was drugged before I think by accident as I was at a restaurant with my dad so I don’t think I was the target person. I ended up passing out in the bathroom and when I came to I was still safe in a stall. I told my dad and even though he played of off I could tell he was furious. I just hope the real person never got their spiked drink and I took a fall for someone else. Luckily I was okay just feel woozy for a little bit.

Are you sure you didn’t faint? I don’t think being drugged makes one unconscious for the duration of a restroom break. Hope you’ve had a medical checkup, this could be related to your blood pressure or something else.

Good strategy. At uni my brother was in a bar and they had a social awareness campaign whereby staff would clip a little plastic frog onto your glass if you took your eye off it, to illustrate how easy it would be for someone to have put something in it. Pretty clever. And thankfully no one choked on a plastic frog. That we know of!

When she was about 10, my sister went to a friend's birthday party, and the older relative spiked the kids' drinks with PCP.. Yes, PCP. Thought it was funny to see them freak the f*ck out. Fortunately (?!) my sister hated that flavor of Kool-Aid, so only took the polite sip. Still messed her up a bit, to say the least. She was all shaky and "weird" for a solid day. Couple of the other kids were in hospital for a few days. Yeah. I was raised not to trust, for some obvious reasons, really....

The world is just so f****d up right now. Just so f****d up. Why do people think it's OK to do drug someone and then rape them? Or do they know it is wrong but that's what they want to do anyway? Just so f****d up.

Right now? This has been going on for years. I was in college in the 90's and we used to frequent a bar that served drinks with sip-through lids on them so we had less of a chance of getting drugged.

Speaking of great ways to handle this, I read about a guy that invented a type of nail polish that reacts to the chemicals creeps put in women's drinks, so the woman can put her finger in her drink, and within seconds the color will change and she'll know if her drink has been tampered with.

That is a great invention! During the ‘90s GHB was the rape drug in the Netherlands. Learned from my dad to always cover my drink. When my mum was younger in the 1960s the drug they used was chloroform. These inventions can save a lot of young woman and men in the future.

This is a great way to handle the situation for several reasons 1. The guy who drugged the drink gonna try to nope tf out of there. 2. It will definitely discourage anyone else from doing the same. 3. If anyone else was also drugged without someone seeing it they will also be safe. 4. Now you have everyone looking out for strangers who look like they may have been drugged and now it's everyone's business.

I've been drugged three times. First time, I suspected immediately and asked the hotel staff to get me to my hotel room safely. Second time, it hit faster but fortunately, my friend and the pub staff got me into a cab and home safely to my own bed. Third time I wasn't so lucky as I came to while he was raping me. I don't go out much at all anymore and when I do, I take my drink to the washroom with me or I ensure my friends keep my drink safe.

I was on holiday once, me and my friends met a few girls on the beach and got on really well, spent most of our time together. later in the week we went out to a club together. During the night some guy bought a drink for one of the girls, she tried to refuse but he was a little too insistent so we intervened and sent him packing. A while later and my mate bought a round of drinks and put them on our table. Not long after that the same girl said that she'd probably drunk enough and gave me her drink. I don't remember much else but the following day they all said they were convinced that the drink was spiked with something because I was a complete mess. We mate went back to the club and reported it but they didn't give a s**t.

A guy in my town is seen as crazy, but the real story is that many years ago he was had a promising athletic career. Unfortunately, he went to a party and someone put something in his drink. He hasn't been the same ever since. He is a really nice guy and minds his own business, but because of what happened to him, he has conversations with inanimate objects and stuff like that. He doesn't bother anyone and most people are not bothered by him, but some people just assume he is some crackhead who is all messed up. He has never done a drug in his life other than the one in his drink.

Well done to that manager! He really knew how to control the situation. When the band stopped and the lights came on I bet that spiker was s**ting it. This is something that has been going on for a while and most people should know by now that you do not leave your drinks unattended! If you need to use the bathroom or something you should ask a friend or even the barman to watch it. These spikers that do this are very sick people and will stop at nothing to get what they want!

they probably did, quietly. But, to be totally honest, if the guy walked out the moment the announcement went out, it's going to be fairly hard to get the guy's identity. Especially if he paid cash and wasn't a regular. Even then, its going to be hard to get a criminal conviction out of it. witness identifications are notoriously unreliable to start with, and it gets worse in a bar where everyone is drinking.

My younger sister and I only went clubbing together. Because bartenders have to take the lids off all pre-mix bottles as they serve it, we decided to only buy a certain brand of pre-mix, and take our own lids. That way, we could cap our bottles when we weren't actually drinking... yes we were paranoid - but my sister was at Uni, and someone in her class had been drugged.

Wrong, wrong, & wrong. The girl pointed him out, so they knew who he was, & they just basically released him to hit other bars & rape their customers??? Not even a warning to the woman he was with? Unless you don't trust the witness, enlist the bouncers, the band, the manager-whoever-& get the cops on the way. You have probable cause so you can legally detain him. Keep the drink for evidence & closely watch the guy so he can't dump anything.

Well. This post is bullshit. Because in the pic is written that a lady said that a specific guy drugged a drink of a specific lady. She could have had point at them. She what is the point of making this fuzz then? Like new drinks for all? Call the police, call security, hold that guy. And then you can still make the announcement. So for me this story is fishy.

What I want to see is men calling out other men. Without having to make a direct accusation they let the perpetrator know that they, as other men, consider this 100% wrong.

My sister & I were drugged... it was afternoon & no one had access to our drinks except us & the person who prepared them. I called the owner of the bar restaurant but she denied it happened. It can happen even when you are cautious & diligent.

There's tons of cases if you bother looking-----including one case where the bartenders (in a Seattle bar) were selling GHB to would-be rapists and then telling them the correct doseage.

There were a couple of "I'm a dude and it happened to me" comments in the original post. The most striking one was the guy who was drugged when his female friend bought his drink. I rather suspect it was his friend who was the target.
