“Banging” Noises Detected Every 30 Minutes In Desperate Search For Titanic Tour Sub – Reporter Who Previously Rode It Says There Were ‘Many Red Flags’

Acoustic noise coming from the depths of the Atlantic brings hope in the search of a submersible gone missing with five crew on board on Sunday. A Canadian aircraft reportedly detected “banging sounds” on Tuesday, repeating in 30-minute intervals, indicating the likelihood of life thousands of meters underwater.

In a statement released on social media, the president of the private American exploration group Explorers Club, Richard Garriot, said, “We have much greater confidence that there is cause for hope, based on data from the field—we understand that likely signs of life have been detected at the site.”

The search carries on as the race with time continues due to the declining levels of oxygen in the submersible. BBC reports that according to the rescue authorities, the vessel has fewer than 30 hours of oxygen left.

‘The Titan’ started its journey towards the wreckage of Titanic off the coast of Newfoundland in the early hours of Sunday, June 18th. In a press briefing on Monday in Boston, Massachusetts, Rear Adm. John Mauger said the Coast Guard was searching for five people missing after the vessel Polar Prince—the submersible’s mothership—lost contact with the latter approximately 900 miles east of Cape Cod.

The search continues with the help of US and Canadian agencies, navies and commercial deep-sea firms, BBC News reports, using aircraft, sonar buoys, and other means in hopes to detect the vessel and safely return the crewmembers. The five people on board include British businessman Hamish Harding, British-Pakistani billionaire Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son, French mariner Paul-Henry Nargeolet, and CEO of OceanGate Expedition, Stockton Rush.

OceanGate Expeditions reportedly have had to cancel dives and missions before and have encountered troubles during one last year

Chris Brown, who was supposed to join billionaire Hamish Harding on the tour, changed his mind due to safety concerns related to the vessel

Another person who was planning on joining the expedition, a friend of Hamish Harding, Chris Brown, withdrew last minute due to safety concerns. According to The Sun, the multi-millionaire had a change of heart after learning that the submersible was controlled by a gaming console-like device.

He told The Sun: “I found out they used old scaffolding poles for the sub’s ballast—and its controls were based on computer game-style controllers. If you’re trying to build your own submarine you could probably use old scaffold poles. But this was a commercial craft.

“Eventually I emailed them and said, ‘I’m no longer able to go on this thing’. I asked for a refund after being less than convinced,” he added.

CBS correspondent David Pogue, who joined the expedition last year, covered the vessel as well as the waiver thrill-seekers have to sign before onboarding it. In a video for CBS Sunday Morning, he cited the document, which reads in part: “an experimental submersible vessel that has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body”.

As the search continues, Andrew Von Kerens, a spokesperson for OceanGate Expeditions, issued a statement to Bored Panda:

“For some time, we have been unable to establish communications with one of our submersible exploration vehicles, which is currently visiting the wreck site of the Titanic. Our entire focus is on the wellbeing of the crew and every step possible is being taken to bring the five crew members back safely.

We are deeply grateful for the urgent and extensive assistance we are receiving from multiple government agencies and deep-sea companies as we seek to reestablish contact with the submersible. We pray for the safe return of the crew and passengers, and we will provide updates as they are available.”

Yes especially for a sub put together with scraps. And can someone who knows explain why a gps locating system would not be an obvious must have for a remote controlled untethered submersible?

It’s amazing the amount of press and “ thoughts and prayers” this tragic event receives. It’s amazingly disturbing that the hundreds or thousands of migrants, whose lives are lost at sea, receive barely a fraction of the press coverage or empathy. What does that say about us, as a society that values the lives of a handful of rich thrill seekers so much more than the thousands of poor people fleeing war, famine, or persecution?

Thank you. I was reading an article this morning about the 10 vessels all out, or on their way out, to search. These guys made a risky choice. Many people die every day through no fault of their own for medical reasons, or in other ways, but no one chucks this kind of money their way to save them. If these guys survive (unlikely, but I hope they do) I hope they learn to find a better way to spend their excess money - like helping those who can't afford the medical care they need, or funding search and rescue organisations. After they've paid for their rescue of course.

Oh my sweet lord since the minute I read about this in the news, I have been praying SO hard that they'll be rescued and still alive. I cannot even begin to fathom how frightening this must be for them ::edit because of new developments:: well, now we all know it happened very shortly after their descent. I've read that with the implosion, it would have been so quick that they died instantly. That whole time I was seriously envisioning them trapped in the submersible, sitting on the ocean floor and watching time tick by and knowing their oxygen is going to be gone. Also from what I've read, there will be no bodies to recover. If anyone of y'all know something I don't (i.e. dying instantly from the implosion) please let me know. Sometimes, when I read articles about this horrific tragedy, I see a few contradicting another piece I've read so I humbly ask you to share with me anything you've read or heard. 😞💙I cannot even begin to say how very sorry I am to these men's families

That’s a terrible way to die, trapped in a tin can floating around under the sea. That being said, why risk your life to go all that way down to look at a shipwreck. It’s a graveyard, not a tourist attraction. Leave the ship alone and let those who perished Rest In Peace.

Many of the commenters didn't read the various articles about this, so I'll try to clear up some things. The "banging noise" was just that. A banging noise. There's no proof that it's from the sub. During the search for the USS Thresher , similar sounds were heard, but it turned out to be from the other rescue vessels. GPS pinging won't work at those depths and the tour company owner cheaped out on safety equipment and inspections, so they didn't have a sonar beacon either. He's gone on record as saying he doesn't think safety regulations and certifications are necessary. An off the shelf controller isn't necessarily a bad thing. US Navy submarines use XBox controllers for the periscopes, and most wartime drone operators use similar controllers to do their work. Logitech is a reputable company, so their product is not yet to blame. Also, the ocean is a big place with strong currents and the submarine is a small object. Its last known location is already several days out of date, so it won't be easy to find. With the way it's shaped, colored, and bouyant, the sub could be "floating" just below the surface and take several weeks before there''s any sighting ( if it's not a crumbled ball of metal and meat sitting on the ocean floor).

Who cares if they’re billionaires? They’re people, like us, and deserve to be helped just as much as anyone else. Honestly, it shouldn’t make a difference with who “deserves to be rescued”

Is everyone else really helped like this - to the tune of millions of dollars, with 10 vessels on the way to help? If everyone else was, then, yes, I would agree.

As depressing as it is... they aren't going to find this thing. Not in time, maybe not ever. The bottom of the ocean is a big, big place, and we know less about it than we do the surface of the moon. There's a reason it took so long to find the Titanic in the first place. RIP.

Isn't it true 80% of the ocean is unexplored? That's a lot of space to search most of which humans will never be able to go unless in the form of a lifeless body

If they are alive at the bottom of the ocean with no ability to resurface, their one and only hope is the little French robot submarine able to dive at this depth that is supposed to arrive Wednesday evening local time. Rescue would have to be fast, it’s a critical situation.

Massive red flags everywhere: Viewing port only certified for 1300 meters, titanic is at 4000 meters. Fired engineer that told them it was not safe Not certified at all for deep dives - CEO thought too costly and time consuming No physical backups to parts, just a couple of touchscreens and 1 button Launched in international waters to avoid certification Even if they were bobbing up and down on the surface of the water, could suffocate - bolted shut from the outside with 17 bolts

Wouldn't the entire thing collapse under the pressure of the ocean? They probably imploded. Are they the ones steering? Because they would be the only ones able to sense things going very wrong with the pressure situation and know to get out of it and how

It’s amazing the amount of press coverage and “thoughts and prayers” this tragic event receives. It’s even more disgustingly amazing the lack of coverage and empathy migrants lost crossing the Florida Straits or Mediterranean receive. Our society seems to value the lives of a handful of rich people seeking a thrill over the lives of hundreds or thousands of poor people escaping war or persecution.

I imagine they could be found, even if it takes time... saved however.. maybe not. As I type this comment, headlines are saying there is less than 20 hours of oxygen remaining in the sub. So.. at this point, it's likely going to be a retrieval mission than a rescue mission, though we can all pray otherwise. :(

I really do hope for the best for these people, but my empathy and hope can only go so far. They went onto a very small submarine(?) and went to the BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN to see the titanic. They knew the risks coming in and yet they still went. I wouldn’t potentially throw my life away just to see a shipwreck, even though this isn’t about me.

omg this is horrific. I've always wanted to go visit the Titanic, but I'm definitely unable to afford the cost. But I would absolutely go down there with EYOS Expeditions: they've been down there many times, safely and with actual real Submersibles. Or definitely go with the trained folk on the Keldish. The Mir submersible is a famous one (not sure if that's with EYOS or not) that I believe James Cameron went down in. I'd never go down on a duct tape Xbox submersible with rusty ballards. Like, who ever heard that info and still decided, "I must go.", .... it's sad. They want(ed) to see their dream come true and man. To be stuck down there, maybe not even close enough to at least be seeing the Titanic is so heartbreaking. If I was down there, I'd prefer to be seeing it because out of all things to see when facing potential death, the Titanic would be on my list.

That waiver should have stated "no one's coming for you if something goes wrong" You call an ambulance, die you still get stuck with the bill. How many millions of hungry children, homeless people, lost refugees could have been helped with those funds these government agencies put out. Did they see a profit from ingratiated rich passengers should they be saved? This just sickens me. So many red flags. You are on your own if you're going to be so dumb. Lets help people who actually need it. I feel bad they got kind of duped by this shady company but also.. the waiver said “an experimental submersible vessel that has not been approved or certified by any regulatory body”. They use a s****y a*s wireless game controller, the previous voyage had a situation where the sub spun in circles due to some idiot installing a rotor/propeller device BACKWARDS! Fired the only guy to raise safety concerns.

I cant believe someone would ask why this doesn't have GPS... Its underwater! GPS does not work under water. Nor does most other types of wireless communication. Sonar is pointless as its for them to find things. not for being found. The controller is also a big nothing burger. What do people think it needs to control? Huge levers?

People are clueless about things that are fairly common knowledge, so I'm not at all surprised. That said, some people are thinking there's a chance it's bobbing around on the surface somewhere. That would allow the sub to locate itself, but (obviously) seems pointless if they can't communicate (did I mention that people are clueless?). On the controller front I suspect some of the disapproval is based on the cost (I've seen $29.95) or that Logitech isn't the reliable equipment producer it once was.

KNOWING they’re probably going to die, and freezing while doing so. Jesus.

Oh, and the sub is bolted shut from THE OUTSIDE. There is no way for the occupants to open it even if it's jus bobbing along the surface somewhere

I apologize for my ignorance here, but would any leg of the military be helpful here? Wouldn't the navy have the means to locate a craft underwater? Genuinely curious.

The US Coast Guard is out assisting with rescue operations, so I'd be sure that Canada and other vessels are assisting as well. The US Navy has vessels for submarine recovery, I don't know if they're there. or not.

Seriously. The closest I want to get to the Titanic is going to an exhibit in a museum. I can't imagine wanting to go to the bottom of the ocean. It just sounds terrifying.

omg this is horrific.

I think I'd rather implode than to slowly suffocate in a tin can stuffed with other people. I of course hope they're found safely, but if not, I hope their deaths were quick and painless.

If they're found on the surface then they're okay. If they are still on the bottom then the chances of rescue are zero at this point.
