Many of us deal with huge amounts of information every single day. We’re constantly bombarded by facts, stats, opinions, and pieces of advice pretty much everywhere we turn online. But with so much data, some of the truly important bits of info sometimes get lost in the noise. Not all of it is pleasant.
The members of the r/AskReddit online community shared the saddest statistics they know in a couple of threads. They might give you a more nuanced perspective on the world. Scroll down to check them out, but be warned that some of these stats are quite sensitive.

The USA incarcerates more of its own citizens both per capita and for total amounts than any other country. They jail over 400k more citizens than China, which has 4.5x the population and has zero freedom of speech and a pretty punishing government. For profit prisons is legalized slavery.

85% of all dog attack deaths are pit bulls.
anon:
And the most likely dog to bite is the chihuahua. The main difference is a chihuahua bite tends to require a Band-Aid and a pitbull bite generally requires amputation or a blood transfusion.
Please never let us breed chihuahuas to 5 times their current size. Angry little sh*ts.
Pitbulls are also the most abused species of all, because of some small-dicked asshats using them as status symbols or intimidation devices. Poor mistreated animals, shelters full with them.
I think I used the wrong word here, it's *breed, not species, lol xD Sorry, I'm not native.
Load More Replies...5 times their current size would have the advantage that you could see them without a microscope.
"Anything that bounces when it barks, not a dog. Anything you can easily drop-kick over a fence, not a dog." (Jeff Dunham)
Load More Replies...I read that the reason small dogs tend to be more aggressive is not due to inherent features but because we're less likely to restrain or reprimand a small, cute dog if it misbehaves
That's one part (looking at the 3 Malteses that terrorize our neighbourhood). The other is, that a lot small breeds are underestimated hunting dogs. A granny that does not work her dog should never own a Jack Russel or Dachshound and yet a lot of them do.
Load More Replies...I have a 100 lb pit named Chauncey who has zero prey instinct. We live on a farm and he cuddles with cats and runs from chickens. It's all in how you raise them. My heart goes out to all in the UK losing a friend soon....
You never know when he's going to snap and attack a child's throat. The one that attacked me at age 8 was a "total sweetheart" too, until it wasn't.
Load More Replies...blame the owners who mistreat pitbulls, bigger monsters than any animal...
Yes and no. Yes there are absolute monsters out there. But my sister in law has a male pit-mix dog. Biggest baby and lap dog ever, loves her kids and my kids. BUT if anyone comes in that house when his people aren't there, he WILL protect his home and if fully capable of sending someone to the hospital if he wanted. He's a spoiled baby, but is still bred with the protective instinct.
Load More Replies...CDC: Pit bulls are both more likely to be involved in bite incidents and more likely to cause serious injury or death when a bite does occur. In fact, from 1979 to 1998, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determined pit bulls were involved in the most fatal dog attacks, accounting for 28% deaths due to dog bites during that same time period.⁷
What about from 1998 to 2023? I'd love to read some current statistics.
Load More Replies...It's 65% get your statistic right. Still crappy but a quick google search isn't hard.
not true. Most people cannot correctly identify a pit bull and just assume. You can try picking the pit bull out of a line up here: findtheAPBT.jpg
While I agree with your point, I would not use this chart. It's a poor example. That is not what the average purebred, show quality American Pit Bull Terrier looks like. Most likely some sort of cross. Not sure where you got this, but it's a misleading chart that is too easy to tear apart if you're a pit bull critic.
Load More Replies...They are bred to fight and kill... Fighting-dogs have been selected and bred based on fearlessness, aggression, strength and etc for hundreds of years. It's a dangerous dog. There are certainly bad owners and also really good owners who can handle a fighting-dog. But there is no need for these breeds outside military use when we know how dangerous they are.
Load More Replies...I have a Chihuahua who is the most laid-back, sweet dog ever. In his 13 years, he's never bitten, much less growled, at anyone, even me. It's not fair to lump all dogs into one category; it's based upon a lot of different things how they end up behaving. My Chi is not included in the stereotypical behavior of Chihuahuas. And I'm sure not all Pit Bulls are, too.
I always get so annoyed when people defend pitbulls saying most are sweet dogs and harmless (which I totally agree with) but then turn around and say negative stereotypes about chihuahuas in general
Load More Replies...The stats can not be trusted unfortunately. So many dogs are misidentified as pit bulls. However there are studies that show that pitbull terriers are one of the most tolerant breeds. They are also so wanting of affection and love that even after being severely abused and mistreated by evil people they can rehabilitees.
I had a pit bull and he was the SWEETEST DOG ON EARTH! I think the way the dog is treated has a major impact on their temperament, no matter the breed!
I love every breed and had dozens of different dogs. Treated them like children but I advise to never forget they are animals that can react to unexpected triggers. A squeak from a little child can trigger the most loving dog's predator instinct. Never leave little kids or elderly people alone and unattended with a dog. Dogs can harm weak persons even when they do not mean it. My SIL, 67, had her eyeglasses smashed on her face by the dog at her workplace who just wanted to show his affection. She's very short and he's a young muscular Amstaff, she needed stitches and new eyeglasses and had bruises on her eyebrows
Just why we should license pet owners much more the the pet, Far too many people see a pitbull being walked just like open carry.
For this case any strong big headed dog is named pitbull, but they might not even be pitbulls at all.
Chihuahuas and dachshunds are the only dogs that have ever bitten me and I've been around tons of pit bulls and rottweilers.
The only dog that ever attacked me was a pit bull.
Load More Replies...Now the question: Do people that tend to train their dogs to be aggressive choose a specific race?
Not always a specific breed. Could be Pit bulls, Staffies, herders, mastiffs, Fila Brasileiro, basically almost any type of dog that was bred to fight, protect, or in some cases, herd.
Load More Replies...The sad part is that pitbull is the breed most likely to be euthanized. Not even because the animal itself was vicious, but just because they're known as a vicious breed. Also because some of those rescues have been so badly abused and traumatized by their owners, even when canine experts try working with them, some of them never lose their fear and mistrust of humans, disqualifying them for adoption.
I think the chihuahuas mostly being demon spawn is because their owners don’t feel the need to train them
I think the aggressive nature is due to there size. The world is a lot more scary when your the smallest dog.
I've kept aot of dogs, and the most nasty, bitey one was a cocker spaniel we renamed sid vicious. Eventually rehomed the little monster to a farm way out in the country where he lived with a bachelor farmer. I currently have a crossbred chihuahua who's a real sweet dog.
https://www.emeraldlife.co.uk/pet-insurance/cocker-rage/ not saying he had cocker spaniel rage but it might be
Load More Replies...Let the GOOD pit owners band together and start to bring back the nanny dogs they used to be. Breed out the aggression and work on bringing back the gentleness. A St Bernard could mess you up a lot worse and faster than a pit - why don't they... because they are bred for better qualities than that. The dogs are not bad, the breed is unhealthy - and MANY of the owners are disgusting POS - But many owners are wonderful and are trying.
Pit bulls were never nanny dogs. That was a myth made up in 1979 by a breeder that got published in a newspaper. They were bred explicitly for bull baiting and when that became illegal, for dog fighting. Why would a “nanny dog” EVER be named “pit bull”?
Load More Replies...I will always blame humans for how dogs misbehave or because of attacks. My family has had more than one Pitbull who were the gentlest of creatures right until death. The big problem with Pitbull is they were bred to be defenders of their humans (used to be used as nursery dogs) so once they clamp down it’s difficult to get them to release their grip. If you don’t know the history of a grown or partially grown animal, don’t try to own them with kids in the picture. I adopted a dog (not Pitbull) that had previously been used as a bait dog. Took lots of time and work to get it so he wouldn’t attack any masculine shaped person that came near me. I lived alone so was safe to do this. But he could’ve very easily hurt a little one or a masculine shaped person. (He was killed by a hit and run driver while family was dog sitting while I was in the hospital.) Oh. Had neighbors with chihuahuas. They were evil little shits killed off a third of my chicken flock in one afternoon. Owner did nothing
I've said before that, if we ever invent cyborg wardogs, we'd be fools not to put chihuahua brains in them.
I‘ve read once that most little dogs are like this because their owners don‘t bother training them, unlike bigger dogs. If so, it would actually be beneficial, if they were bigger
I've been bit by 2 dogs in my life. One was a mutt, the other was a chihuahua. Both bites were my fault.
Our pit bull loves people other dogs not so much. Chihuahuas are angry because people don't respect their boundaries. No dog wants to be picked up by strange people, poked, or anything else you wouldn't ever do to to a large dog.
Both breeds will be what you project onto them as a dog owner... want a purse accessory? Well then you end up with a nasty, frustrated little gremlin that will bite everything, ( get a plushie instead)! Want a dog that is only a status symbol( to you) with big jaws, a drive to please, and then you don't socialize it in a positive way? Then you have a massive liability, and dead dog that only did what you taught it to do! So many people should not have dogs! Both breeds are wonderful! People make them neurotic. Pits were 1 of the best breeds I worked with in behavioral rehab. Chihuahuas bit way more, but the good Chihuahuas were lovely dogs when they had good owners!
The problem is not that pit bulls attack people more than other breeds, it’s that too many people don’t know what pit bulls actually look like and misidentify a number of other breeds as pits. Also, small-minded @ssh@ts see pit bulls as the “scary” breed and abuse them to make what is normally one of the sweetest, most people-friendly breeds turn vicious.
That is not always the case. There are lot of good natured chihuahua. They are not little shits, just because you decided they were. Mostly it’s because people try to pick them up, I wonder, would you get fed up if people tried to pick you up all the time?
And in the middle, we have my doggo. He's an Australian Shepard. He's so smart!
in the 1950s & 60s cocker spaniels used to be USA's biggest biter; they were nick-named urban alligators
Pitbulls are beautiful kind caring and loving animals, until you put them into an abusive home and they learn that violence is the only thing.
My friend got bit by a chihuahua in the face and had to go to the hospital
Over half of "pitbull" attacks are misidentified because people don't actually know what breed it is and blame the "scary pitbull" breed
My pitties would only bite someone IF that person was abusing me - they don't have a mean bone in them. My JRT would've been way more likely to bite someone but also -- don't touch me..
i'm sure the statistic is accurate, but also pitbulls are so abused by humans. they are trained to be vicious. but like most dog breeds, if you train them and treat them right, they can be the sweetest dogs. so it kind of makes me sad that people demonise this breed just because of what people have done to them
If you ever find yourself in the unfortunate position of being attacked by a dog, one of the only ways to get them to release you from their bite is to spread their front legs as wide as you possibly can horizontally, use ALL your might- they cannot handle it- break them if you must. Something I've unfortunately had to learn and spread to my loved ones due to the insane increase of dog attacks happening in my country lately.
Chihuahuas have little man syndrome. The chip on their shoulder is larger than any pittie
Socialized dogs when pups, including chi's and nanny dogs (pit bulls) are a loving asset to people.
someone said they thought chihuahuas were aggressive a lot because of their size. Because they’re so small their social cues and warnings are often ignored - i.e picking them up, teasing them etc because they’re so small and can’t do anything that eventually they bite. I’m not sure if it’s true but seemed like it could be a contributing factor. My bf has two and they are really well behaved. One is super snuggly and the other is the sweetest little thing, he looks like he is always smiling and his tail only stops wagging when he is asleep.
I've always heard that smaller dogs are louder because they know they're small, and are trying to appear scary so the big maybe-predator doesn't hurt them. Big dogs know they're not in danger.
No such thing as a bad dog. It’s all on the OWNER’S!! Because of irresponsible and ignorant owner’s, a whole breed of a dog is outlawed in most places. Pit Bulls can be the nicest dogs ever, but the owner’s screw them up and train them to attack. When they attack, they get put down . Poor dog’s.
Pitbulls really get a bad wrap- I had a pitbull as a teen and she was the sweetest thing, every time she accidentally hurt people (cause she would get excited and jump on people) she’d get really sad and check on them and give them kisses. I recently went to adopt a dog to live with and when I found a pitbull that looked like my old pup, the rest of my family told me to “be responsible and think of the kids🤓” and “what if it goes mad?? 🤓”
I just will never understand why so many people own pitbulls. Do they make them feel tough? Do they think that their dog wouldn't possibly hurt or kill someone? I know I couldn't live with myself if my pet seriously hurt, or killed someone. Owning one shows a low level of intelligence. Go ahead and down vote me. I know the truth hurts.
No such thing as a "bad breed." Of the 51 dogs rescued from Michael Vicks' horrible dog-fighting ring, all pitties or a related species, only TWO could not be successfully re-homed. One was too badly injured and was euthanized and one was too aggressive despite many efforts to try and get through. (I suspect as a result of severe trauma at an early age.) The story is wonderfully told here: https://bestfriends.org/sanctuary/about-sanctuary/animal-areas/dogtown/vicktory-dogs/champions-film/stories-about-dogs#:~:text=The%20stories%20of%20the%2051,of%20pit%20bull%20terrier%20dogs.
Pit bulls generally are sweethearts if treated properly, though. We had one that was 1/2 pit and 1/2 lab, and the only person she ever hurt was me--she almost dislocated my shoulder running away from a rabbit!
This needs context. Pit Pulls are illegal in the UK, so it doesn't apply here. Perhaps it's a US-only thing?
What do you think an xl bully or am staff is?
Load More Replies...Pit bulls were bred to destroy. I've had to protect my small dog from 4 of them on three occasions where they pushed through gates to get to us. And on 4/2/23 an off leash pit, standing next to his master, approached me tail wagging. Once within range he he leapt strait for my crotch, missed, caught my phone in my pocket and broke the screen. The police came. In the ACO's final report it was falsly determined that I called the dog me and where the bite was determined to be my fault.. The owner had only received from the shelter six days prior. Tell me how this dog was vetted and considered safe. Please tell me how Mr. Big was responsible for his dog. Please tell me why he had all his personal info redacted from the report. And finally, where is that dog now? Cause I never see him chained in Mr. Big's fenceless yard.
Yes, Isabella. If a dog bites a human, a human has done something wrong. Maybe not the person being bitten, but the dogs' owners have not taught it to behave. Or, if you're just stupid enough to annoy the dog, maybe they're telling you to leave them alone.

You shouldn’t trust anything you stumble across online blindly without first considering its trustworthiness. At the same time, cross-referencing every single claim would eat up most of the time in your day. Not to mention how mentally exhausting it would be!
So your best bet is to do some light research if you think a fact sounds iffy. Look at multiple sources and figure out which ones you can most often rely on to get things right. Sensational headlines might get clicks and views, but they might rely on a single new study that may need more follow-up research.

Yeah, 2 million.
Approximately 42% of Americans are deficient in Vitamin D according the NIH.

Basically, we need the D.

Broadly speaking, you want to consider the potential biases of the source making a certain claim. Try to think about what their goal might be. Are they representing a certain product or brand? Do they have any identifiable political leanings? Is there a deeper agenda behind the data?
The idea is for you to try to be as neutral as possible and to look at the facts as they are. That means removing all the emotional reactions about how you (dis)like this and that data because they (don’t) conform to your current worldview. Though we’ll never be completely unbiased, we can do our best to try to be as objective as we can. And that attitude should help us filter out much of the fake news floating around on social media and the news.

All sources make errors from time to time. That’s inevitable. But the very best sources own up when they make a mistake—they don’t shy away from making corrections. Moreover, they’ll usually paint a nuanced and complex picture of reality. On the flip side, someone who makes the world seem overly simplistic or black-and-white is either oversimplifying things, misinterpreting reality, or wants to push a certain agenda.

According to psychological studies, on average the late-40’s are the age when people are the least happy. Several factors contribute to this…you could be dealing with empty-nest syndrome for the first time as often at this age kids are old enough to leave home, you could be feeling the financial crunch of putting said kids through college, turning 50 soon could be weighing on your mind, there’s a likelihood you’ve lost at least one parent by this time, you could be burnt out on your career but still years away from retirement, and many women have begun going through menopause at this time.
But the good news is, people then to be much happier by the time they reach their mid-50’s, so if you’re in your late 40’s and are battling with some of these things, just hang in there.
And then when you reach 69, you are so blissful because you can't remember the bad life you had.
Approximately 1 in 7 women suffer severe post partum depression. My wife got hit by it like a truck, and we were completely unprepared. In reality the number could be significantly higher too, because it is generally not reported or acknowledged.

These stats will never cease pissing me off. Almost all of Bezos "wealth" is directly tied to the value of his amazon stock, of which he retains 10.5%. This is true for almost all the much hated billionaires....they have STOCK, not 100 billion sitting in the bank. And because they are board members, or executives, they cannot sell that stock withOUT multiple levels of approval.....because if bezos decided to dump all his shares, not only would he get a fraction of a penny of the supposed value....but amazon would cease to exist, 1.5 million people would be unemployed and countless people wouldn't get their very important overnight delivery of edible underwear, twinkies and condoms. The only way they have money to spend, is either by trading stock....or taking loans out against that stock....because a loan is a debt.....that money is not taxed up until the point stock is actually sold TO COVER THE DEBT. Which is why musk paid $11 billion in taxes last year.

According to a Home Office report (Morgan et al 2020), the UK homicide clearance rate is around 80%, though I found a poorly sources claim that it's fallen dramatically. A study comparing four Western European countries (Liem et al 2018) found similar or better rates. It's much worse in the US, with recent FBI stats reportedly putting it around 50%, down from about 65%... Whatever, the point is that these "SHOCKING FACTS" would be a lot more interesting if they were backed up by evidence. The number of these *informative* posts with statements saying "most", "about", "estimated" and "likely" show how random and biased opinions really are, and have no business being shared as "facts".
