49 Times Makeup Artists Messed Up And The Clients Had To “Wear” Their Fails (New Pics)
From the soot-rimmed eyes of the ancient Egyptians to the lead paint worn by the Elizabethans, people have long been experimenting with cosmetics. Sometimes, however, with disappointing results. And the subreddit 'Bad MakeUp Artists' is probably the best place to explore these failures.
Created in 2017, this online community currently has 568K members constantly sharing pictures of both everyday people and celebrities, appearing in front of others with far-too-obvious fake lashes, overly defined brows, and ridiculous foundation color tones.
We've already covered the subreddit before here and here, but it has had so many new additions since our last publication that we thought there's plenty of content for an update. Continue scrolling to check it out, and don't miss out on the chat we had with British beauty content creator Jane Cunningham, spread out in between the pictures.

Steve Carrell And Will Ferrell Presenting The Award For Best Makeup At The Oscars
Luckily for all of us, makeup guru Jane Cunningham, who can also be found on Instagram @britbeautyblog, thinks that it's not that hard to get the basics.
"Makeup textures and formulas have come a long way so they're easier than ever to use," she told Bored Panda. "There's a big difference between being decent at makeup and excellent at makeup but most of us can scrape by with adaptable products such as lip and cheek crayons."
"There's a very useful trend for sheer looks and a 'less is more' approach and that's an ideal entry-level for experimenting and learning. A good example would be that if you're not confident applying foundation try a tinted moisturizer instead — there's less pigment and far more leeway for good blending and a glowy finish."

Cunningham believes that it's mainly the process that separates the experts from the amateurs.
"Pros are taught in a very particular and meticulous way that gives them a foundation of knowledge on which to expand. Once you understand skin tones, textures, and effects, you can experiment with layering and enhancing," she explained.
"A good example might be that it takes most of us a couple of moments to apply eyeshadow or lipstick but a pro can be there for a long time working with the colors to get them absolutely perfect."

All Of The Makeup Artist’s Looks Are Like This! Their Clients Look Scary
"A happy amateur enjoys applying the product, enjoys the finished result but isn't looking at their work with an MUA eye so mostly won't see that the results aren't technically perfect. Which is fine!" Cunningham said.
Another factor is versatility. "A huge difference between amateur and pro is that MUAs can create perfect makeup on anyone; amateurs can often only create looks on themselves."

Some makeup artists use a powder that appears white in photos, under the flash light of some cameras, but the makeup looks fine/normal in real life. It appears that this is one of those cases.
Talking about mistakes, Jane Cunningham likes to look at them from a similar perspective as the late Bob Ross.
"It's still quite easy to go wrong with foundation tones, but it's hard to say what's a mistake and what's a happy accident," she pointed out.
"Makeup looks have never been so unregimented. Personally, I don't love huge lashes or a lot of highlighter but that's only my preference," Cunningham said. "If it's making you happy, it's not wrong!"

The eyes are obviously bad, but I can't help but feel sorry for the woman in this picture getting the negative attention. Not fair for her to be the subject of this , especially on her wedding day. How doesn't the "artist" not even know that this is a bad look?!

"The only 'wrongs' I think can be ignoring hygiene around application, or as a pro, not following your client's wishes and going with what you think is best," Cunningham said.
"I've seen a couple of practice bridal looks recently that really didn't hit the brief and I've ended up doing the makeup myself on the day for one of them."

It Gets Worse, But The Mua Does Admit To Being Inspired By Drag Makeup
However, if you're a beginner, you might want to learn some skills before others as they can make a bigger difference in enhancing your look.
For that, Cunningham suggests blending. "If all your layers (primer, base, blush, bronzer, highlighter) are seamlessly blended then it just looks effortless. If you can pick up anything from online tutorials, focus on blending," she said. "After that, it's easier not to go wrong."
"Oh, and liquid liner! [Although] I've never mastered it and fully believe that some people are never meant to make it happen (i.e. me!)," the beauty content creator added.

She Looks So Sad
Her Skin Is So Beautiful
Why do people insist on removing every single bit of skin texture they have through filters and airbrushing?
At the end of the day, getting better at makeup is about studying yourself, which, ideally, shouldn't become a chore.
"Just enjoy your beauty products, don't rush to be an expert, take your time, and practice until you like what you've achieved," Cunningham said.
If you're mindful about what you put on, chances are, you won't end up on this or any similar subreddit!

i mean its not that bad i like the preciseness and the colour its just wrong on this lady
Yeah, that ultra precise eye liner kind of suits her, I think
Load More Replies...I think this is intentional, definitely shows the Make Up Artist's skill.
the skill is deffo there - evident from that GORGEOUS eye look + insane precision in carving it out alone. the problem is undertone. she used a bronzer that's a little too dark + way too yellow toned for this person. now it looks orange + clashes w the rest of her base make up. the fact that she highlighted all the areas except around the forehead where the brows start makes it look like an orange block compared to the rest of the 3D blend mirroring natural highs/contours. the photo has deffo also been tweaked. as a MUA, no makeup in the world can delete ur pores entirely, smooth that perfectly, or show so vividly in photos. i hate when MUAs remove the naturalness of a face/natural "blemishes". it pushes unattainable standards, creates self consciousness + ppl get upset w MUAs bc the makeup doesn't look this perfect + smooth. it's setting unreasonable expectations. if ur a good MUA u treat each client independently, work w their face shape/style + won't emphasise insecurities + texture
Load More Replies...It looks kinda cool, but only for a costume or something, definitely not every day.
This wouldn't be so bad if they wouldn't have made the forehead so dark..
This is a style of makeup that isn't exactly supposed to be natural looking or glam, etc. It is hard to explain, but there are a ton on IG and TikTok MUAs that do things like this. It is very technically difficult to pull off. This really isn't that bad at all for this kind of style.
Looks kinda cool actually. It's more hunger games than real life though.
Precision drawing there. Maybe do it to canvasses though, not faces.
This is actually very skillful, but it doesn't enhance her beauty, which is the point of makeup.
Well you shouldn't notice the skin color while you are trying to guess what kind of moth is pasted on her eyelids.
Great precision line work. Too bad she did it on her face and turned herself into some weird sort of modern art piece.

You know what? I find this pretty sad that women and girls think they should cake their face with goo to try and be beautiful without realizing that they look totally fine without all those layers of make-up. The eyebrow thing and covering up imaginary blemishes on your skin is out of control What has happened lately that they think they need to do this? How do they see themselves? Do they really think that looking like this is ok? Not one woman is ugly without make-up and I hope this trend stops because the message it sends is very toxic.
Seriously! I'm halfway to suspecting there's a maga makeup conspiracy of some kind.
Load More Replies...So an entire list basically dedicated to mocking women... some of these aren't even that bad at all... this feels a little bitchy. Shame on you bored panda
As I replied to another comment, I think the point of this post is to shame the "make up artists" who actually have the balls to charge money for this.
Load More Replies...When I was 12 I was on ballet and we had to do a show for half the neighbourhood. I tried to get out of it, but they insisted I should come andI couldn't say no. A woman said: ooooh so nice, can I do your make up? Sure. Pale white face with blue eyeshade and red lipstick and all the neighbours watching, because their smaller kids were on ballet too. LOL horrible. My parents even saved the pic lol.
You forgot the super pink blush! 😁 I never figured out why, but that always seemed to be the standard dance / cheer competition make up look! Ahhh memories.
Load More Replies...Perhaps I just don't understand the whole fail-thing.... but imo it is not a fail if the person wearing the make-up likes how they look or it is intended to look bad. If they like how they look I personally just think they have made a bad choice. Not failed. Perhaps they just have poor taste. That doesn't make their choices fails. Just bad.
Y'all will make any excuse or try and justify tearing down another person. It's not right and I'll die on that hill and keep saying it until my last breath. Stop being hateful and wanting other people to join in and agree with this. STOP, JUST STOP TEARING OTHER PEOPLE DOWN!!!
Stop it with those lips....you know they were horrid even when they were a "thing".
Maybe lay off. If makeup makes them happy, let them do it. No one needs makeup. Spread the word if you agree. I'm getting off this article. BoredPanda please stop posting shaming articles, they're really mean.
To be honest, most of them are better then I could do... which is why I never wear makeup 🤣
I feel sullied and unusual. Don't they realize how RIDICULOUS they look? I mean seriously? You look in the mirror and think you look GOOD? You can see what all that cr*p is doing to their skin (all of their complexions have LOTS of acne) because they keep putting it on their face. I worked with a gal who used really expensive makeup (Princess Bourgessa?) to hide her adult acne. The makeup was CAUSING it. She used the phone in my office once and left an orangish slimy substance behind. Like, Lysol wipes time slimy.
This is how ALL of the current "Kardashian" copycats look to me. The amount of foundation they put on is ridiculous. Makeup is supposed to enhance your natural look, not turn you into a mannequin. lol
I don't wear makeup, I never had the patients to learn how to put it on without looking like a clown. Even when I got married, I tried a few looks out, but ended up using tinted moisturiser and a bit of lipstick. That said, I don't like the way people who enjoy make up are criticized - most of them are doing it for fun and it's harmless. One time I was out with a bunch of teachers - none of us makeup types - and a group of over made up women came in. Admittedly, I started to judge. Do they have too much time on their hands? Do something more useful with your time. Then a woman I knew joined their party, I found out they were all of a hospital night shift - my friend was an anesthesiologist, surgery had been long that day. Makeup or no makeup doesn't tell you much about a person really.
What is wrong with people! I mean did they not look in the mirror? How are they still employees? So many questions and no answers
So many of these remind me of make up jobs from the musical 'Cats' - particularly the London/ West End style. So many of these people are naturally beautiful. So sad 😔
When did painted on man brows become beautiful? When did blending foundation, in one's skin tone, go out of style? This isn't a makeup trend, it's war paint that makes these beautiful ladies look like a Picasso portrait.
Yikes! If I'd spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars to a makeup artist and looked this bad, I'd be madder than a nest of hornets! Why so much orange....
Do people not know what blush is some of these mua i feel like think the only color you can get is bronze
It looks like if any of them sneezed the makeup would come off in one lump like a mask.
When I was a little kid, I went to my older sisters elementary school Christmas concert. A lady sitting in front of me turned around to be nice and talk to me, she told me I looked so cute....I told her she looked like a witch. Apparently when I was young I thought people who wore make up were witches. Nice work little tara.
There are only two possibilities here. 1. Some of these people are not experienced in makeup. I which case, I don't want to make fun of them. The only way they're ever going to become good is to keep going, keep practicing, keep learning, and they're not going to do that if I shame them for not being awesome on the first try. 2. They LIKE how it looks. In which case, what business is it of mine to look down on them, judge them, sneer at them, publicly ... I'll say it again ... PUBLICLY mock them for it? No. That's just wrong for me. I really don't think this kind of topic is okay.
and the orange look..aren't women tired of being orange faced, then having to spray tan the rest of body every week just to keep that look up? I mean between putting on fake hair, lashes, nails, butt lift undies, and getting lip injections every so often...aren't u tired? men will still be men..u lookin like that is not going to keep him with u..it's one headach and a heck of alot of cash to keep spending. try being yourself, wear make up if you want ..and relax, try being more of you and less of a media clone
Make up should be about enhancing what you've got, not painting a new face over the top. And if you can see foundation you're doing it wrong. If you wear makeup my tip is to get a make-over/lesson from a qualified professional every 5-10 years.
A lot of these look like they weren't paying attention to how the were holding a can of spray paint and accidentally sprayed themselves in the face.
My daughter pays her friend once a year to do our make up for our company Christmas party. I was grateful that her friend understands the barely there, natural make up concept. That is the only time of year that I wear full make up and I still feel like my face is 10 pounds heavier. I dont know how someone can walk around with that much make up on their face everyday. I will stick with my mascara and lip gloss and once a year glam up. I would be pissed if someone put this much make up on me.
i once bought a foundation that supposedly was self correcting. what i got was something that looked and felt like putty. thankfully, it wasn't too expensive so i didn't feel bad immediately tossing it. but, what i really want is this trend of blocked brows and the mannequin look to end. all of these women look the same. besides, i like a more natural look in order to actually see the person.
I had really thick fuzzy eyebrows as a teen and I was forever trying to thin them out. It just looks so comical with that drawn on look. How much time does that take?
Load More Replies...i bet the majority of these were thinking "DAMN I look good" afterward.
