Woman Finds Baby Buried Alive While Jogging, Here’s How He Looks 20 Years Later When They Reunite
Matthew Whitaker is incredibly lucky to be alive today, and he owes it all to the actions of Azita Milanian, who found him buried alive in the woods just hours after being born, 20 years ago.
Now, Matthew and Azita have finally been reunited in an emotional meeting on Air with Ryan Seacrest, the first time they have met since that fateful day. “I was waiting for you for 20 years,” Azita said to Matthew. “You’re exactly what I’ve imagined. I guessed your size, everything. Thank you for coming into my life, you changed my life. I knew we were going to connect again. The day I met him he confirmed my faith. God brought us together for a purpose.”
Azita found Matthew while jogging out on a hiking trail in Altadena, California back in 1998. He was buried in a shallow grave, covered in dirt and barely breathing. It was one of Azita’s dogs that alerted her to Matthew’s feet sticking out above the ground. “He went after something and I thought it was a dead animal or creature,” she said in an interview at the time. “Then, as I looked deeper in the dirt, I could see it was a child.” She began to frantically dig away at the dirt with her hands. Then, she said, “I screamed. There was a blue towel, and there was a baby in there.”
After dialing 911 with no success, she alerted a passing motorist to the situation. The driver headed to the local police station while Azita stayed behind with Matthew, comforting and cleaning him up. “He grabbed my wrist and stopped crying,” Azita said. “It was very emotional. What kind of sick human would do something like that? He still had his umbilical cord hanging from his stomach.”
Amazingly, Matthew survived and was put up for adoption. Azita never saw him again, and his mother or whomever it was that abandoned him was never found. Matthew didn’t learn about his incredible second chance at life until recently.
“I was in the car with my godmother and she was like, ‘Has anyone ever told you the true story of how you were found?’ And I was like, ‘No’ and she was like, ‘Legend has it …’ and then she told me the story and I was just in awe and then I went home and did research and then I started telling everyone because I felt so cool that I survived the impossible,” he said.
The pair plan to keep in contact, and Azita is finally able to fulfill her dream. After originally reaching out to child services all those years ago, she was told that he had been adopted and would not be able to see him. “It was the most frustrating experience,” Azita told the LA times. “I was hoping that he would find me, the same way we found each other that day.”
And now, finally, he has found her. Scroll down below to see how the story unfolded, and watch the emotional video for yourself. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Was just as shocked too. Even did the calculation in my head to make sure they did not make a mistake. Now I feel really old
Load More Replies...Pardon my French, but WHO IN THE ACTUAL F**K BURIES A LIVE CHILD THAT'S F****D UP ON SO MANY F*****G LEVELS
She was probably a teen or young woman who had the child in secret because she was scared. Not an excuse but a likely answer. She was probably young and afraid.
Load More Replies...I know alot of people are saying you can leave a baby just about anywhere with no repercussions, however the first safe baby haven law wasn’t till 1999 and that was texas. All the other states have followed since….not that it forgives her for leaving the child like this, but that argument doesn’t actually apply.
Thank you, Bored Panda for sharing. Thank you, Azita Milanian for rescuing Matthew Whitaker. Thank you, Matthew Whitaker for becoming such an happy human being. <3
Perhaps the mother was attacted and killed by the father. Or someone else. Kinda hard to give birth (baby still had umbilical cord) and dig hole and not leave big gobs of blood around.iObviously someone was mentally unfit but since story does not reveal who did it maybe focus on the fact that a wonderful person came along
Thank goodness for her smart dog. A few thoughts though, what if a young new mother for some reason thought the baby dead? A burial even shallow is a sign of care, maybe the mum got scared and thought she had hurt her baby, or maybe someone didnt want the mother to keep the baby and just took him...it is possible i have been watching too much Elementary, but did anyone search the land in case the Mum had complications and a friend or the father maybe just panicked and she was gone/buried and was near the baby too. I am glad he was saved, but i hope his Mum is/was ok, i dont care how messed up life is if she did this thing she has suffered for sure or someone is/has, i hope this story reaches them and is some kind of relief.
as horrible and crazy as some things are in life there is the opposite, beautiful and miraculous, this story has it all.
This is proof that everything happens for a reason. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful story today, BoredPanda. God bless.
No it isn’t. It’s evidence at best. Proof has s much much much much much much higher standard.

In my country there are so called "Windows of Life" when mother can leave her baby and no questions are asked, no judging, no punishment. She leave her newborn and noone can accuse her for "child negligence". After she closes the window, there is an alert to people responsible for the window (usually nuns) and they call doctors who take child to hospital to check if child is okay. After that there is very fast adoption procedure. Mother has about 6 weeks to change her mind (as in situation when she left her child in hospital) but child usually is already on pre-adoption home in this time which is much better then being in hospital all the time

What an incredibly sad beginning of his life, but right now, so incredibly beautiful how he turned out to be and that this beautiful woman who saved him, is now reconnected with him! And what a hard decision it must have been to choose to not adopt him, because of safety reasons, while it is clear to me, she would have wanted to adopt him so bad! This woman is amazing and brave beyond belief! I am happy they both turned out so wonderful and they got reconnected. They will always have a special place in each other’s lives from now on!
People ask “How could this happen?” A young mother, not married, no job, abandoned by her family, and no access to healthcare. This is what’s happening again in many states as states close down women’s health centers because they don’t want women to have control over their bodies. Vote no to taking away women’s health. Only 3% of healthcare provided by these clinics is about abortion. The rest of it is about providing contraceptives, STD screening, Pap smears and breast exams to prevent cancer, maternity care, infant wellness checks, and so much more. Abortions are at an all time low right now because women can make choices about their bodies.
Awww this is so sad so many have abandoned their babies😢and we should take them somewhere where people will take care of them instead of in the middle of nowhere
How could anybody do that to a baby. And how do you live with knowing that your mother did that to you.
Hey Daria, first he never said that the mother did it, could have been the father, second, explain to me how you can "accidentally" bury a baby alive in rubble.

Police Station, Church, Hospital just drop the baby off no questions asked, but buried alive a new born baby...OMG!
God works in mysterious ways.. There is always a reason for everything.
This is the most beautiful story you've ever told on BORED PANDA. Praise the Lord that she was drawn to the mountain that day!
Thank God she happened to come across him. What kind of a monster does this to their own child??
This is so heartwarming. It's reassuring to know there was a ray of sunshine amidst the storm and that they could reunite.
People are so cruel, it is incredible! If I was in her shoes and this happened and I could afford it, I would have adopted him. <3
His family could have left him anywhere but they decided to bury him alive. That means that they want him to die. They could have left him ANYWHERE and it would be better than burying him alive.
Hospitals, firehouse, churches, police stations, town hall, and, others will all take babies no questions asked

You can literally leave a baby at a police station, hospital, or fire station no questions asked. Some cities even have safety "bins" outside so they can do it quietly and anonymously. Whatever the mother's reason was the choice she made was wrong on so many levels. There was so many options she could have chose, but she chose murder. I'm sure she got what was coming to her. Karma has a way of doing that.
I'm with my 5 month old daughter right now, and the thought of a baby even younger than her being buried is heartbreaking. Just because someone doesn't want to or can't care for a baby doesn't mean you need to do that.
Goddammit. I am EMOTIONAL today!!! Wow. This is the 2nd article i've seen today that I've started to cry watching. While at work.
Sometimes things just happen when they are supposed to. I'm sure she was supposed to go jogging there that morning, with her dogs.
1. Im not crying. You are. 2.wth is wrong with those people? Leaving a baby out there to die? 3. 1998 was 20 years ago?
This is amazing, but, it brings me to his biological mother!! It is just so sick that respect for human life has come to mean so little! 30 years ago, you just wouldn't have seen this s**t! Babies in dumpsters, babies buried! It used to be unheard of! Mother's would at least leave the baby at a church or some other safe place that they knew the baby would be found! It makes me sick.
The key word in your paragraph is "sick". No mentally sound person could do this. People have always done awful things, it's not a new phenomenon. I'd even go further to say that people must have done things like this 30 years ago to have warranted the safe places and laws that we now have.

Load More Replies...This is always going to be a problem when a country provides little to no social welfare support for its poorest citizens. We obviously don't know for sure but it seems like the mother gave birth in the woods and then buried the child as she just couldn't care for it. Imagine how mentally traumatised and desperate she must have been....In the UK I often think our social welfare system is too lenient on those who don't want to work or contribute and just get state benefits. But then when I read stories like this I realise it's the lesser of two evils. No one should ever feel so helpless that they think burying a newborn child is the best solution to a particular set of problems. As a 1st world nation, the US has a duty to prevent stories like this happening.
There are places such as hospitals and fire stations where you can drop off an unwanted baby no questions asked. The hospital I work in has a big neon-yellow sign on the side. Search Baby Safe Haven laws, looks like every state has one although the places you can drop them off vary by state.
