How Society Destroys Your Creativity, In An Award-Winning Pixar-Like Short Film
Modern society tells us to do well in school, work as hard as we can, and eventually teach our kids to do the same. It’s an endless cycle that doesn’t exactly leave much room for creativity. This short film is encouraging people to look at things differently, and is striking a cord.
Alike, a Pixar-like affair by Madrid-based animators Daniel Martínez Lara and Rafa Cano Méndez, is a 7-minute lesson on what happens to your life when creativity is drowned out by the daily grind. It’s also about parenthood, and the importance of letting kids to forge their own journeys. The critically-acclaimed short was made entirely with Blender, an open-source 3D rendering program, and is dedicated “to our families, for helping us not to lose our colour.”
As Canadian journalist Graydon Carter once said, “it’s a rare moment when we take a break from the tribulations of the daily rat race to reflect on assumptions and values that we casually accept as gospel.” Take one of these moments for yourself, and give Alike a go.

Sorry to hear that... We should all live colourful lives (and be able to do so!)

Beautiful... There was not even need of the "Pixar-like" click baiting. I was attracked by the theme itself.
It's a wonderful and really important movie because it shows the truth. Those losers at the end bear such an amazing resemblance with some people I've met. They used to look at me in the same way because I was telling stories about my interests-books, art and oh, yeah, zoology. Finally I stopped paying attention to their nasty comments("You are such a weirdo, ha ha") and my life simply improved. I gave myself a promise that I won't leave anybody let me down. I became a rebel forever. I got to an even higher level yesterday, when I made a speech on a protest against construction of more buildings in my neighborhood. Stereotypical communities suck and I'll fight against anyone who tries to make me part of one.
Well made short. It takes me back to grade school. Back then there was funding for the arts. Now it's all about preparing for tests. Death by public school and death by public service. But we can change, continue to encourage children to use their imagination and creativity. As adults, be brave and take risks.
Individualism is such a Wonderful thing, and I want to stand up and shout YES! to the world! And thank heavens it never goes out of style. Even in a "One size fits All" society, there are those who willingly buck the system. And I am one of them. Even with my masters degree, and military upbringing, I'm a proud Individualist, who relishes being self-employed, and utilizing my creativity to make beautiful things for others. I relish Individualism above everything else.
All Hail Individuality Down with Totalitarian Collectivism!

It's not Pixar. It's a spanish studio. Not all the animation short films are from Pixar! Other talented studios exist.
It didn't say it was Pixar- it said it was like Pixar- but I agree, talented people are often overshadowed.

Try to watch without crying!! Cry all along!! Awesome music and animation!!! Kudos to the creator!!
The world doesn't act against us, far too many choose to stop being creative. It takes effort to be creative and lets face it, most folks are simply too lazy to do soemting creative in their life. I work 40 hours a week at my job as a mechanical engineer and designer on pumps. I then spend another 20 to 30 hours per week on art projects in photography, which is my creative outlet, my sanity break. I make time for this in my hectic schedule and family obligations by engaging family members and myself in what I do and they do the same for me. If you are simply just working, sleeping and working again, who is to blame for this? You are, not society, not the system. What happens in your life is most often what you allow to occur.
You have a good point, but it all depends on various life situations. I was afraid that, spending 9 hours in an office, and 1:30+1:30 hours of commuting, I might lose my creativity too, but then it turns out that managing a gaming community (which is what I do for a living) is a more creative job than I immagined. My point is, you can still find creativity within your school/work, and be efficient in what you do, and stay creative. Which is also something that this video does not consider at all. But I do admit that I still find it difficult to find some more time for my actual hobbies (drawing, writing). I didn't give up, though.

I am old school, and do not believe we can do without formal education. It is never an easy job for the parents
If they have electronics, you can take them away temporarily. And draw, read, craft with them. Also, it's a bonding experience.

I'm currently using this AMAZING short film for a unit I teach my 7th graders called "Cultivating Useful Ways of Thinking"; It ties together two different lessons. The first lesson is GROWTH vs. FIXED MINDSET and the second is RESILIENCE & PERSEVERANCE. My students are completely taking on the symbolism and metaphors to new levels. Our main discussion points are: 1.) The changing of COLOR, MUSIC, BACKGROUND, and EXPRESSIONS. 2.) Are the figures male or female (how can you tell and why do you designate them as such - what has SOCIETY told you a "boy" or "girl" should be?) 3.) What does the "Tree Island" in the middle represent? 4.) What does it mean to have a BALANCE in life in order to "keep our color"? I am SO GLAD this film was created - amazing brilliance to ignite thoughtfulness and insight to our human selves and what we are doing as a society.
For real all of you negative folks who are obviously misunderstanding the message, and only hearing what you perceive to be against your beliefs. Please calm down and look at it again without the negative feelings overwhelming you. No one here is trying to change you or your beliefs. They are simply showing you how the father realized he was not doing his duty as a parent by making time to encourage his childs creativity. His fault not society. Please tr keep peace in your heart my dear friend.
I am not judging. I am just m an observation.

Outside of the school/workplace your free to do what you want to pursue what makes you happy. ito took the dad a while to realise that as a parent he was failing in his duties by not helping to develop his sons interests. Hopefully, now he understands his duties he will help the son chase his dream and interests.
One may see rejections in life but we need to be strong and continue our quest. For children: education and enjoyment are both necessary.

This made me cry. School killed my enthusiasm to learn, and beat up the creative in me. I despise conventional schooling.

Load More Replies...Great short about the violence of the education system and how it prepares us to ditch our creativity, individuality and self-interest. The world really is grey nowadays. I wish I could go back and quit school after I'd learned to read and do basic math. School doesn't educate, it indoctrinates. Only thoroughly indoctrinated humans would put up with jobs. Humans aren't made to have jobs.
I totally felt like this just recently. I am turning 41 in a few months, and while I don't "feel old", since the new year, I have just had a hard time finding any joy in day to day life. I can't stand the drivel that people are constantly posting to FB, including by my friends. I've un-liked tons of pages and hidden some friends. I used to really enjoy my job, which does let me be creative and work from home, but some days I find myself staring at the computer and wondering why I bother. One thing I never stopped doing was encouraging my kids at being creative. I take them to the dollar store to buy craft items for whatever their latest favorite thing is: elastics, beads, coloring. But the worst part is... is not having anyone to talk to about it... I can't afford 'counseling', I dont want to keep a diary.... it's frustrating, but slowly getting better now that spring is here. I think it's partial to end of winter blues (and tax time).... anyway. That my rant. :)
Yep - thats modern life - the rat race - little boxes - if you are an individualist people tink you are strange - they can't pigeon-hole you. The Powers That Be want a society of worker ants who don't think for themselves - just tow the party line - yes sir - no sir - three bags full sir!

Amazing short ! As an artist and creative person its hard work to hold onto that "color" that keeps us alive. The daily grind of work and daily life has all but destroyed all the creative things i use to do when i was younger...anxiety and depression have taken over and now its the fight to get back...one day at a time...watching this gave me a glimmer of hope thank you
Why does it say Pixar-like? Give the actual company/people that did it credit! Doesn't need to be compared
This is sweet and cute. I had a teacher in high school who would always get mad at me for doodling. She literally would kick me out for doodling while I waited for the rest of the class to finish the assignments. I never gave in though. I got kicked out twice a week and one time she even asked to play connect the dots on my face because of my freckles. I just lifted my cheek up to her and said Go Ahead. She then said I was going to fail at life and never go to college. Here I am getting my masters after holding down a full time job for the past three years. That lady can suck it, and no she didn't "inspire me", I was always going to college, took AP college prep courses, and whatever. She was just a b*tch.
PLEASE, add this song twice as a background music for this wonderful movie. They compliment each other so well. I love watching them together :) https://www.boredpanda.com/award-winning-film-society.../
this really touched me and brought tears to my eyes. Silent but powerful each time i saw the father and child's color fade it brought me back to my child hood. creativity helps me keep my demons quiet and makes life a little more bearable every time we lose a pigment of "color"we lose a piece of our soul never let the light fade never allow the world to make you grow cold....

God. I started sobbing when the old guy turned blue again under the tree.
"...journalist Graydon Carter once said, “it’s a rare moment when we take a break from the tribulations of the daily rat race to reflect on assumptions and values that we casually accept as gospel.” --- Hmm, well I spend/spent my life reflecting on and questioning assumptions and values, rather than accepting them as "gospel". It has usually resulted in being looked at as if I'm crazy, being ostracized by the majority, or driven out of jobs.
I totally identified with turning the letters into creations of beauty. All of my note taking in high school & college had drawings on the borders and interspersed throughout each page
Thanks for coming up with a new shorthand for animated films. "Like Pixar." Bravo.
This is SO true! "I" should be able to learn what "I" want, not what successful people think "I" should learn. "I" should be able to play basketball for 6 hours a day, and spend 2 hours in school. "I" should be able to do what "I" want all day, not spend all day in school learning about health, english, math, science... "I" should be able to go to college for 6 years and get a useless liberal arts degree, and someone should be forced to give "me" a good paying job because "l" learned what "I" wanted to learn. "I" should be able to put all kinds of metal in my face, tattoo my eyeballs, and spike my hair, and all of you losers should be forced to let "me" represent your interests. I feel sorry for those of you that think this is reality. In THIS country, everyone is guaranteed the opportunity to pursue their dreams, the outcome is not guaranteed. If you depend on society to achieve your dreams, then you expect far too much from the rest of the world.
This is a very nice and uplifting story but... “it’s a rare moment when we take a break from the tribulations of the daily rat race to reflect on assumptions and values that we casually accept as gospel" ... actually the message in this short is the one we accept as gospel. There isn't a single person among us who hasn't heard a message like this solemnly and without arguing.
There was a child at 04:05 with pigtails, it's possible that it was a little girl. I didn't spot any other women either but maybe someone with more keen eyes did. Anyways, as you know, usually it's accepted that male is the default and it's 'easier' for people to relate to 'him' rather than 'her'. Half of the story took place in an office setting and again, it's accepted that male is the default when it comes to business, so naturally it was a father rather than a mother who was working the bland, monotonous office job. In all honesty I don't see why they couldn't make one of the important characters female - maybe the child or even the violinist. Not even the teacher was female, and that's a position traditionally held by women, especially in the lower grades with the younger children. You're right for questioning the film. Although it had a nice message, visuals and was emotional, it was a tad clichéd.

Wow this whole description is an overinterpretation in the wrong direction. Society has nothing to do with sapping your creativity. It's your own attitude that destroys it. What I like about this movie is that for the dad to be happy, his son has to be happy. To the school and work I only say Scientia Vos Liberabit.
