From an early age, Athena Brown has embraced her identity as a creative soul. Growing up, she explored various forms of art, dabbling in painting and crafts, but it was during high school that she discovered her passion for photography. The medium captivated her, leading to a successful career as a portrait and wedding photographer during her college years and beyond. While she doesn’t have formal training, she credits her artistic development to the invaluable lessons learned through mistakes, viewing life as a mentor in her creativity.
Today, Athena balances her artistic pursuits with her roles as a wife and mother of two. She credits her supportive husband as a vital source of strength throughout her journey.
Life’s challenges have ignited a fire within her, prompting her to rediscover her passion for painting, beginning anew with watercolors. She has found that watercolor’s fluidity and unpredictability allow her to embrace mistakes, fostering a sense of freedom in her work.
In contrast, her experience with acrylics and oils has been more tumultuous. Initially finding acrylics challenging, Athena discovered that abstract art was the perfect outlet for them. Oils, on the other hand, present a unique love-hate relationship for her. Unlike acrylics, where she feels in control, oils demand a collaborative approach, teaching her the importance of letting go and allowing the medium to guide her.
It is evident in her work that Athena believes life, much like art, does not need to be perfect to be wonderful. While she holds deep respect for technically flawless art, Athena remains committed to authenticity, choosing to paint from her heart. Her work reflects the resilience she embodies—a path to self-healing and expression. Follow her on Facebook @ABOriginalArt.
