Game of Thrones viewers might not have been able to see most of the Battle of Winterfell, that apparently, as one fan aptly put it, was lit by one slender candle – however, there was one moment that nobody missed – Arya Stark ending the Night King like the badass trained assassin she is. Many were shocked by this “major plot twist” was not a twist for anyone who has tracked her steady training or remembers the multitude of foreshadowing in the previous season’s dialogue.

Major Game of Thrones Season 8 spoilers ahead

Game of Thrones fans have now become accustomed to epic plot twists that keep them on their toes

And midway through the final season viewers were hit by Valyrian steel with another one

The Night King was slain and it was nonother than Araya Stark who defeated him

Turns out we hadn’t been  tricked but the producers were setting up this plot reveal for some time

Fans and castmates were shocked when they discovered who would be the one to take down the dreaded Night King but the producers revealed the plot had been in motion for several seasons. “For, god, I think it’s three years now we’ve known that it was gonna be Arya who delivers that fatal blow [to the Night King],” said executive producer and writer David during a post-show “Inside the Episode” breakdown.

From the first time we met Arya, it was clear that she was a force to be reckoned with. While her brother Bran showed the first signs he was not going to be a great warrior, she came in with the sneak attack and hit the target

Her archery skills continue to be highlighted at the moment in the godswood. The aim of the producers for season 8 was to bring elements around full circle, so in the Battle of Winterfell we see Arya yet again shooting her bow to kick things off

Taking it back to Season 1, Episode 2 Arya is bestowed with her first weapon, Needle, by Jon – and Arya lets him know she can be quick

She is trained by many masters throughout the series but her first lesson is given by Jon

Whose words she brings back in this episode

Many have critiqued the story choice of Arya killing the Night King, yet her entire arc has focused on her training to be the deadliest opponent. Her first teacher after Jon was Syrio Forel, who taught her to be even quicker – like a cat – and what to say to the god of death, “not today”

Arya’s role in the story gives new meaning to the other characters, like her father Ned Stark, who have sacrificed themselves to save her

Season 3 is when the producers say they came to the decision that Arya would be the one to end the Night King, which makes this prediction from Melisandre peak foreshadowing

Fans might not have realized it at the time but the Blue Eyes remark held the key

Despite the disdain Arya holds for the Hound, he was another one of her teachers and taught her to  find weak spots in armor

As well as how to stab someone in the heart

The Hound is another piece of the character puzzle whose purpose is revealed later on. Ser Beric Dondarrion – who had been brought back – hinted at this

As it’s revealed their purpose was to keep Arya safe so that she could fulfill her destiny to save everyone

Weapons have also proved to be important characters on Game of Thrones. In Season 1 we are introduced to the catspaw dagger that was used to try to kill Bran, which he gives to Arya

And is ultimately used to prevent the Night King from killing him

The dagger isn’t the only callback clue in the Night King death, Arya’s hand-switch trick she uses to kill him is seen during a fight with Brienne in Season 7

Her surprise attack on the Night King is also made more believable as it is carried out in the same spot where she snuck up on Jon in the Season 8 premiere

That’s right there have been little eggs placed throughout the series that led to this moment

And when you think about it, it makes sense that this trained assassin would be the one to save us all

Maisie Williams, who plays Arya told Entertainment Weekly, her heroic defeat had been kept secret even from her, “I was like, ‘Are we fighting the wights? Does The Night King die? So who kills him? What happens?’ And no one would say anything. Why is no one saying it? This is crazy.”

“It was so unbelievably exciting,” she says. “But I immediately thought that everybody would hate it; that Arya doesn’t deserve it. The hardest thing is in any series is when you build up a villain that’s so impossible to defeat and then you defeat them. It has to be intelligently done because otherwise people are like, ‘Well, [the villain] couldn’t have been that bad when some 100-pound girl comes in and stabs him.’ You gotta make it cool. And then I told my boyfriend and he was like, ‘Mmm, should be Jon though really, shouldn’t it?” Apparently, her boyfriend wasn’t her only naysayer.

This entire story, which started off as books, has been very pro-female the entire way through. It makes perfect sense that Arya defeats the night king, thanks to her training she can control her emotions. Something Jon CAN'T do even if he wanted too. Since she can control her emotions the night king never noticed her coming. It was perfect!

"As it turns out people – men- were not happy that Arya was the chosen one". Yeah, all of 3 men, one who is complaining about it not being set up in the episode enough (I disagree). Just took a look, and found plenty of women complaining about Arya being the one to do it, most of whom wanted either Jon Snow or Dany to be the killer. My husband has been a fan of Arya since he read the books (as they were coming out, way before the TV series), so he was VERY pleased to see her kill the Night King. The people who are complaining about Arya being the one aren't considering how she's been training all these years and how absolutely EVERYONE had an important role to play during the battle of Winterfell. We saw that dragonfire wouldn't defeat the Night King, so that was out. What other option was there? A one-on-one with Jon? I'm not sure how that would have turned out... But everyone fighting helped buy time for Arya to get Melisandre's message and be at the right place at the right time.

Can people just give it a rest with the attempts to find a battle of the sexes in f*****g everything nowadays?? Rey is a Mary Sue, no charisma, unexplained brilliance at everything. Arya is the complete opposite. We've watched her grow up, win, lose, train, and train, and train......and she's awesome...........almost as awesome as Lyanna Mormont!

Wow...this is a TV series. It is ok to immerse in it as deep as to trace hints, but publicly discussiong that you could make a better lot? Pathethic. "Just" go ahead and make a series that will outperform GoT...(I am not a fanboy...just started E1 actually. I am merely annoyed by people who complain when the plot does not fit with their personal preferences.)

Goat is Greatest of All Time, a Mary Sue character is one that is designed to be perfect from the start with minimal flaws. It certainly does not describe Arya's character, she has grown in light and darkness throughout the series.

I am not going to say I picked up on any of these clues in real time but when Arya came to kill the Night King, it just felt right... Jack Posobiec is a twat to the nth degree who would love for anyone to believe he is hauling around a d**k of elephantine proportions. To say he is a waste of skin is an understatement. The guy is so small, petty, and deeply afraid of all women that he lashes out at anything that might possibly threaten to send his fragile, self-aggrandized masculinity straight to the floor shattered in millions of pieces. The a*****e should step in front of a bus.

It's not like Arya had a few fencing lessons and then she kills the Night King. She went through hell, learning how to survive, how to kill, how to want to kill, even before she got to the Faceless Men. She damn well did earn it. And if the internet theory on who the Night King is is true, (as it was with L+R = J) then she's got to face that as well.

I love that Arya was the Night King killer. It makes perfect sense. Even though she didn't realize it at the time, she trained for that moment. I thought she was going to make a mask out of one of the dead so she could blend in to get close to the Night King.

I'm a big comic book reader and back in the 90s, the bad girl trend in comics dominated the market. Dominated to the point that it saturated the market! Too many creators writing or drawing these badass women that were all style and no substance. But yet it was accepted back then because it was cool to see a scantily clad woman with a sword or gun kick a*s. Now I don't get why so many men are not into kick a*s women of today? Is it because they are not wearing a bikini in thigh-high boots? Women can still be strong, gorgeous and kick a*s without having to look like they stepped out of a Maxim magazine. These are the men who either can't get a girl like that or don't want their "masculinity" to be shown that they look weaker against a woman like that. Honestly its sad since there has been a*s kicking women since Linda Carter's Wonder Woman and Charlie's Angels. I loved watching shows of strong females like that who don't need a man to save the day for them.

The parallels with Lord of the Rings are strong as well. When Eowyn kills the Witch King of Angmar, first decapitating his terrifying mount with a beautiful tai sabaki. Why shouldn't Arya kill him? The gripes against her are unimaginative and her act, like Eowyn's , immensely gratifying.

Honestly I believe this shouldn't have been the THIRD chapter, but the last, or the second to last. I loved Arya killing the Night King, but after all the build-up of the eternal night and the winter coming, Killing him on the third episode may make the other war (King's Landing) kind of anti-climatic. You know, like recovering King's Landing, THEN killing the Night King with a unified army, revealing Arya is the one fulfiling the Azor Ahai prophecy... and Gendry taking the Iron Throne with Arya as Queen and their offspring finally uniting the Seven Kingdoms...

I'm mean the only problem I had was the prophesy of Azor Ahai being kind of not fullfield and the fact that now no prophecy in the show can be treated that way... But then I started thinking- Azor Ahai doesn't have to be one person. It just as well can be mutliple characters that made it all possible- Dany and her dragons, Hound, Jon taking back Winterfell, Bran giving her a dagger and as he said- your actions brought you wher you are, where you belong. If any of those character chose different path if wouldn't be possible for Arya to kill Night King. If Jon didn't get Night King down, if Hound and Barric didn't protect her etc.

"As it turns out people – men- were not happy that Arya was the chosen one" There is no need to be passive aggressive and make this a gender issue. It's a poor writing issue. 1. The Night King's generals/ bodyguards? literally did nothing. They were about as useful as trees. It's not explained how Arya sneaked past them. 2. The Night King snapped a spear literally one minute earlier. He could have easily snapped Arya's neck or sunk his untrimmed nails in her jugular, thus killing her. We are talking about a creature that has lived for centuries, can withstand dragon fire, capable of melting stone and has killed a dragon. Him dying in one hit by anyone is pretty anti climactic. Two better scenarios are: 1. Jon fighting with the generals/ bodyguards while Arya goes 1 v 1 with Night King and at the very least gets wounded killing him 2. Arya wearing the face of one of the dead men (the way she killed Walder Frey), thus sneaking up to the Night King and stabbing him in the back.

I think we're forgetting at the entire scene of the NK walking up to Bran... followed by the general noticing a sudden gust of wind blowing his hair... followed by Arya coming out of the shadows... and the NK grabbing her by the throat and chest... her dropping the dagger from her left hand... to her right hand... and stabbing him... was in audience time... what 4 minutes give or take? But in the time frame of the world? It would have been 1 minute... and that's being generous. Because It was filmed in slower motion than every other scene taking place at the same time. I think people are forgetting that. So if it was shown in normal run time, it probably would have been a flash of about 10 seconds or so of the general feeling the wind and the Arya coming out with the dagger and stabbing the NK. just saying.

Ok, now i am pissed.People are not pissed because Arya killed NK, people are pissed all those "prince who is promised" subplot etc just went into garbage. BTW Foreshadowing is not people learning skills and then using them. Melissandre and Arya's convo in season 3 is the only foreshadowing, that too very weak. Arya becoming an assassin is best fit foreshadowing for melissandre's prophecy. This is just lazy writing. see GRRM interview on why he never reads fan theories. he says something like "Fans catch the clues and correctly predict the outcome but changing outcome just for shock value because some figured it out leads to unsatisfying ending." ~ paraphrasing . They should have left proper clues that arya could be the next Azor Ahai

Gods the stupidity and predictability of the media, and other retards, to make this a gender issue is just.......WHAT. THE. F**K. How about you listen to what people say rather than who they are. I'm a single white male(apparently the worst there is in modern society) and I hate that Arya took out the night king. NOT BECAUSE SHE'S A GIRL but because its like Tyrion beheading Lord Karstark(bet you don't even know that is do you?) or Dany fighting the mountain. She has no business, narratively speaking, in that part of the story. It is so moronic that it beggers belief and it aint got jack s**t to do with gender!!! BEAUTIFULLY EPIC AND INSULTINGLY DUMB.  We're not pissed that our FAN FICTION didn't align with the SHOW. We're livid because the !! SHOW DIDN'T ALIGN WITH THE SHOW !! -important difference, one the ARMY OF THE BRAIN DEAD FANS just don't seem to get! Wow this is ridiculous if you take into account that for the first seasons the producers didn't know the ending, they were just basing the story on the books, and George RR Martin was supposed to finish the book series before the show catched up. It has been reported that D&D changed the plot to Arya as the Night King killer instead of George RR Martin version of Jon killing it. So this post makes no sense, you just want to find justifications for why Arya is no Mary Sue with an small touch of supposed masculinity fragility. Take Alien for example, absolutely nobody complained that the strongest character is a woman, because it makes sense for the plot. Here it doesn't make sense, but you sure are looking extremely hard for even the smallest justifications. I could take any character and make the same argument, using loose bits and pieces here and there.

Even if someone didn't like the Arya killing NK ending, like me. Arya stark is not Mary Sue. Under no circumstance is Arya stark a Mary Sue. People should stop using it for being unsatisfactory s08e03 ending.

I haven't seen the episode yet, but I don't mind the huge spoiler. Arya is the only one who could and should defeat the Night King. I'm so happy about this.

Arya was the perfect choice. It made sense. It would had been more traditional fantasy to have Jon kill him true but GOT is not traditional fantasy. Arya was perfect cause she is nothing more or less than a weapon. F**k all the haters

I cheered. I was not surprised. Arya has trained and suffered for the whole series for this moment. She even said that SHE was going to kill the Night King. This is a good page to remind us of the journey to this conclusion. It was perfect!

What? People are upset about Arya killing NK? I was hoping she would be the one to do that. All that training has to mean something. Come-on people don't be angry just to be angry. Here's another shock for you fragile men out there. I am hoping it'll be Arya who sits on that throne at the end.

@author, probably a good idea to MENTION that this post contains spoilers? I have seen both HBO and Amazon versions of last Sunday's episode (S08E03) & BOY OH BOY: I am so happy that I do not have or pay for Amazon! As this episode was already dark to begin with, with the Amazon version was 1 big BLUR in comparison!

I genuinely thought there would be silence around the world after that idiotic Arya moment. But instead the mindless rejoice
