I've always loved drawing portraits, and have been drawing portraits on vinyl records for about 7 years now.
I was originally desperate for an idea for my printmaking final and was listening to the new (at the time) Bayside album which had lyrics "the story of his life is etched into a vinyl". It gave me the idea of attempting to etch portraits into vinyl records. I grabbed a few from the second-hand store and tried sketching the outline of a portrait on one to see if I could design the etching that way, and now here we are!
I never ended up trying to etch them, and don't remember what I did for that final, but I'm pretty happy with the results right now.
It would be my absolute dream to make this into my career, so please don't hesitate to contact me if you want a custom record or any kind of portrait.

Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys! Such a talented, handsome man. My favorite <3
I agree! Sounded more like Alex Turner solo material which I'm not a huge fan of, but hey as long as they're happy! I don't have an official website at the moment, I operate mostly from Instagram; http://www.instagram.com/melissajane

I wouldn't expect you to! I'd only added the more recognisable ones to this but got an email saying they'd made changes to the post and now it's basically everyone I've ever drawn haha

Molly; I don't have the option to reply to your comment so you might not see this but if you do please email me at mel_cotton@hotmail.com 💕 it might be a little late to get a Christmas commission to you on time but I might be able to fit it in depending on how much work it is :)
I would love a custom design for my husband! How do I get in touch with you to talk About the details?
these are great but some of these names are completely unfamiliar to me
Thank you!! Yeah I completely understand that, I only had 4 in my original post but boredpanda added a tonne of pictures from my instagram of much lesser known musicians haha
Load More Replies...Amazing portraits and I'm relieved that you used old broadway hits records rather than defacing the records from the musicians themselves!
Thank you! Yeah I only use records from 2nd hand stores that are already scratched up, I somehow found 3 of the same Broadway box sets so I don't think anyone's missing it 😅
Load More Replies...Wow! Beautiful work! I wonder how long it takes to make one. I imagine it's much harder than etching a portrait on paper or another more even surface. Hmm, I'm guessing you can't play the records anymore after they're etched on? Would trying to do that damage the art?
Thank you so much! Last time I actually timed myself (I'll sit down to draw for "hours" but get distracted) it took 15-18 hours from start to finish, I'd like to think I've gotten faster since then but I'd need to time it again. I've never tried to play the records after, I use second hand scratched-up ones, but I definitely think the needle would scratch the pencil back out.
