Traditional Greek statues have come to represent the woman’s ideal form: smooth, firm, unblemished skin, bodies that are completely unattainable for living, breathing women. These statues are early examples of the unrealistic standards that women have been dealing with since, well, Greek times. And body positive artist Weisstub has had enough of those unrelenting demands on women’s bodies.
Weisstub is redefining what’s underneath the skin of those so-called “perfect” women by peeling back the statues’ outer layers to show what women’s bodies really look like: cellulite, pimples, herpes, and scars galore. Her art is a celebration of body positivity, embracing what we’ve been trained to see as defects, though we all have them.
