Art Can Heal, Cameras Can Empower : Nepal Through The Eyes Of Its Trafficked Girls
It is tragic how women and children are the most vulnerable in the chaos ensuing natural disasters and wars. Last month, I brought some digital cameras and taught a group of young traumatized girls, rescued from the brothels of Kathmandu, how to have fun with cameras and to express themselves visually. Most of these girls come from Sindhupalchok district, epicenter of the earthquake last May, and are victims of the destitution and desperation that has forced many families into selling their daughters. Once rescued, the girls at the rehabilitation centre in Kathmandu are provided shelter, legal aid, vocational training and counseling to help them readapt to their new life. Here are some images they captured during the photo workshops, offering an interesting glimpse into the hopes and challenges in their lives.
