I spent last summer and fall creating 175 "Fan Art" monsters based on designs submitted to me by kids. I work up fully rendered the kid's drawings in colored pencil with the same techniques I use when creating my picture books.
I provided four simple starting shapes and invited kids to build their scary monsters off these. The project ran during ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and over the course of the event, more than 10,000 cool drawings were submitted by participating kids. I use the language of "Fan Art" to describe what I make because in no way do I see myself as improving or fixing their original drawing ideas. Instead, I want to celebrate these amazing imaginations by drawing alongside the kids using my own style and sensibilities -- no different than any other artist who creates fan art to champion their favorite characters and properties.
I shared some of these monster drawings in a previous Bored Panda post and thought I would now share a few more of these cute monsters.
