The fingers on my two hands wouldn’t be enough to count how many times I’ve heard that Einstein was bad at school math. Or that bulls go into full-on rage mode when they see red.
Turns out, many of those are just urban myths disguised as common knowledge. So what other nonsense do we, my fellow human beings, all blatantly believe in? This thread on r/AskReddit may give us some answers as people share some of the most annoying myths we all are guilty of trusting in.

That certain animal 'parts' have healing/magical properties. Like tiger whiskers protect the wearer or rhino horn cures impotence and hangovers.
That vaccines cause autism, are made by the government to control you etc etc.
I have autism its not that bad!! Id rather annoy everyone by spouting random dinosaur facts all the time than die of a disease 😂
You would never annoy me. I love learning random facts!
Load More Replies...Even if (god forbid) it's true, so what? Do antivaxxer prefer their kid dead rather than became autist?
This, this is what works me up the most as an autistic person myself people rather their kids die than be like me
Load More Replies...I'm autistic, and if this was true, then can I just say I'D MUCH RATHER BE AUTISTIC THAN DEAD OF F*****G MEASLES AT AGE 4!
That's humans for you. There was a time people believed that women shouldn't take the trains because it causes their uterus to fly out.
I cannot be sure, but from my google sleuthing and previous forays into the realms of hysteria, I think this is itself a bit of a myth. They thought the womb was a mobile organ and might get dislodged by just about anything. The only source I have found for the claim about trains is from 1870 "[women are] likely to suffer from some form of uterine flexion or dislocation". And even in this case, I believe the doctor is talking about the problem of severe vibration on the unpadded benches of the trains, rather than speed.
Load More Replies...A lot of scientists are on the autism spectrum... so technically, autism causes vaccines!
Hey everybody! Remember. Some humans ARE that dumb, hence natural selection!🙃
Yes, sometimes I wonder if Anti-vaxers are indeed natural selection at work. Unfortunately, it's the medically compromised kid in their kid's class or the elderly person on the bus who has to bear the consequences.
Load More Replies...You can all thank Allan Wakefield for that!, He had his own vaccine in the making and wanted to discredit the one we all using now, So he set up a test that made it look like young children got autistic from it so everyone would start using his new vaccine. Some sources:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3136032/ And: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(97)11096-0/fulltext
and this one has real consequences, and respecting their dangerous stupidity is almost just as bad
To be honest, the government does have a history of using vulnerable populations as medical guinea pigs. We like to think that we are past that and that they would never do such a thing today, but the only thing in place to prevent it are the same laws that the government routinely ignores whenever it is convenient for it to do so. So while there may not be any evidence that government using citizens as guinea pigs via medical treatment/vaccines is going on, it remains quite feasible (not necessarily likely, but feasible) that it does happen, is happening, and will continue to happen. Dismissing the idea out of hand is to ignore history and to ignore an ugly truth about the present.
I am not anyone to judge someone’s work and I don’t think one’s profession necessarily is an indicator of their intellect. I very much appreciate the work of both Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey, but can we also just consider that 2 of the biggest mouth pieces of this BS were a playmate and Ace Ventura?
I'll never stop saying this: Two things that never get old: dark humor and kids that aren't vaccinated.
Vaccines are the reason we got rid of many, many horrible diseases. That's why I'm thankful that I get the opportunity to get those shots and also for living in a country where all babies and kids (who are able to) get vaccinated and also most adults. The people around me (for example at work) who don't want to take the covid vaccine are from other countries where they have been abused and can't trust the government which is sad, scary and dangerous.
Actually SANITATION was. Many diseases were eradicated before vaccines because of sanitation. Also many diseases have evolved due to vaccines and they are more dangerous than the actual virus ever was. Measles, whooping cough, polio. Research that in Google scholar or duck duck go or any browser that does not remove relevant information. Google won't allow illegal P2P downloading but they sponsor child porn through back doors.
Load More Replies...This is not just "annoying" - it actually destroys life and cause death... Yes, this myth is this serious and needs shut down now.
I just can't understand such redneck logic. Just like conspiracy theories, I'm like, how can you be so stupid?
With two children who ROCK their high functioning autism, I'm still astonished that I've been told TO MY FACE that it's caused by vaccines. I counter that by saying it's because their dyslexic/autistic/adhd father attempted to read them "Fox in Sox" at around 3 days old and it fried their little impressionable brains. He was too busy minding the boys to read to our daughter when she came along so she only got the adhd. On another note, my now 16 yo extremely witty son (vaccinated, and with Autism) got excited when the new puppy came home from his jabs and said, "oh goody! Now he's autistic!"
I will never forgive Jim Carrey for his role in spreading this myth. People seem to have forgotten that he was right there alongside his girlfriend at the time, Jenny McCarthy, telling everyone that vaccines cause autism.
Umm ...Vaccines are created predominantly by people with Autism,as hyperfocus is their super power
A former friend is an antivaxxer. She has 4 kids, none of them has ever been vaccinated, of course (one of the many reasons we're no longer friends)... Well, her younger son was diagnosed with autism. I bit my tongue but I was laughing internally at the irony of the situation
Don't worry, she will probably blame 5G, or chemtrails, or whatever other boogeyman is currently trending ;)
Load More Replies...As an Autistic man I find the myths of the causes of Autism hilarious.
You can chose to vaccinate or not but for those who chose not to vaccinate your kids and they die don’t come crying and screaming to the very doctor you claim you don’t trust. Can’t have it both ways cupcake .
The doctor who originally floated this idea and published in a medical journal, was found to have (pardon the pun) doctored his research. Medical community came out against him very quickly, after review and he is no longer allowed to practice medicine. The response to his bad research got ignored, and people (sorry another pun) allowed the first story to go viral without doing their own investigation. Such is the nature of gossip, internet blatherskite that people will not do homework on, and general conspiracy effluence. Clue; if it sounds too weird to be true, then it probably is. Clue #2; There is no, nor ever has been, any conspiracy that is so complete that it can eradicate all evidence of it's actual existence. There is more evidence that George H. W. Bush and some of the CIA had something to do with JFK's assassination, than a lot of conspiracy theories floating around now, that folks erroneously put stock in.
Yeah, maybe you should stop taking medical advice from a former Playboy Bunny (Jenny McCarthy) or Donald Trump.
The study that claimed that the MMR caused autism was carried out by a scientist who had made a MMR vaccine that did not have mercury in it. His study looked at such a small sample it wasn't even enough to prove anything. He paid to get it ran in several magazines though hoping to cause a stir and have his vaccine replace the current one. No other studies have come to the conclusion he did either so he most likely altered the data but people believe it anyway.
I know they save lives. Polio, measles, mumps, Diptheria, covid, and the list goes on.
I will seriously never understand people who continue to believe that vaccines cause autism or are somehow dangerous. I guess they are mostly the same people who still believe that Trump won the election. In other words, idiots.
I have autism, a lot of us can be considered pretty normal :) though "normal" can be ambiguous, and there's nothing wrong with not fitting that box either.
And it is all because of this a-hole: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Wakefield ...There's a lot to read in that, and if you didn't already know about him, be prepared to want to break stuff. Here's a taster: "Wakefield was struck off the UK medical register, due in part to his deliberate falsification of research published in The Lancet"
My aunt once said that vaccines cause autism. I wanted to punch her through the phone
This one bothers me, my son has autism and that people think they'd rather risk their child dying than risk then being like my son makes me angry.
Autism causes vaccines. Autistic people are over represented in research fields.
When I hear people say that, I ask them how did I get vaccinated before I was born. They never seem to have an answer for that.
My son is Autistic and I don't know how many people, usually strangers, stop and lecture me on vaccines. Look the signs that my son was Autistic was pretty much there from birth we (doctors too) thought he was deaf from the beginning he failed all his hearing test till someone suggested Autism and yup that was it he is not deaf at all
Don't forget about being magnetized, or the chip -like srs who believes this hahaha
Um, actually a few of them have autism as a side effect . Read the packets
Do some real research on sites not blocking the Truth (anything google...) and you'd be surprised at the Truth
I read somewhere that the belief that vaccines cause autism comes from Charles Darwin (I believe), who made a faulty test that said that vaccines cause autism, picked and chose which pieces of evidence to believe, and published it without being peer reviewed.
Governments ARE stupidity! They revel in it! Why do you think they make it so difficult for children to get an education? Why they underfund schools, especially in poor neighbourhoods, under pay teachers, cut food programs for school children? Why it's so expensive to get post-secondary education? Not just USA under tRump; he didn't start it. He just made it worse. I live in Canada and it's nearly as bad. Tell me this isn't true in myriad other non-Scandanavian) countries. Keep 'em stupid gets them the next election!

"...In matters of TASTE." Yes ma'am that orange plaid looks wonderful on you! Let's wrap it up.
You can "detox" your body from toxins and parasites by drinking certain teas or taking some weird medication.
Repeated diarrhea and frequent urination doesn't indicate toxins leaving your body, your liver and kidneys do the job. If your liver is not functioning or you have a kidney disorder, obviously you need help but it won't be teas that someone on Instagram is boasting about.
Many people still believe hymens are like plastic food seals that cover up the hole and get popped when you have sex for the first time, and if a girl doesn't bleed she's not a virgin.
The whole idea of “virginity” is made up BS to manipulate and control people. Particularly women.
Fish only have a 5 second memory. My fish are fed automatically on a timer and they know dinner time better than my goddamn cat.
We used to have a fish called Grimnos who chose what he was fed with. Crumb, Flake or pellets. We would line them up in front of his tank and he would swim to the one he wanted and stare at it until we picked it up, and he would swim to the top and wait. We tried giving him one he didn't choose once, and he refused to eat!
That violence in the world is getting worse and worse. Actually, in relation to the world's population we live in the most non-violent era in history. The problem is that, while 500 years ago you might have not even heard all the news from within your city, we can now hear all the horrible news from all over the world (and we're also more people). But still, human interaction and conflict in general is much less violent than it used to be.
This. The news love to spread negative news because they think to made more audience that way. But looking around in less main stream media is obvious that we, as humans, are going in the right way. Still a lot of work to do but we should be glad to be born in these times.
That historically, corsets were extremely dangerous. That is false. “Tightlacing”, which is basically just what’s seen in the movies, where they make the corset as tight as they can, was not very common, and only used in the extremely upper class. Most people wore corsets completely safely, lacing down very little, if at all. Women climbed mountains, biked, did sports, and everything, in corsets.
Sometimes I think a comfortable corset would feel much nicer than a contemporary bra!
That if you touch a baby bird, its mother will abandon it because of the smell. Birds actually have a very bad sense of smell.
Ah, this ones good for children though. It stops them reaching out trying to 'play' with the bird, ultimately damaging them. Helps children show respect of animals. For adults though....
That woman can hold their period like we can hold our pee. I am still pissed at that teacher...
A lot of commonly believed stuff about the female reproductive system/anatomy, like vaginas getting loose if a woman has a lot of sex, or that having a lot of sex somehow drastically changes the look of a woman's labia.
People with OCD just repeatedly wash their hands and like things clean and organized. This is how it presents in some people. There is so much more to this mental illness that people aren’t aware of that lead to people not getting diagnosed or help.
I don't have full blown OCD but do have some compulsive behaviors. For example if I see my nails and enough has grown for me to bite (I'm a yucky nail biter) it will "scream" at me until I bite it off. Then I can continue my day as per normal. For my aunt, skew or crooked things "scream" at her until she fixes them, so she doesn't go to restaurants with purposely crooked art anymore. Human brains are weird.

Black cats are rarely adopted from shelters because of this stupid superstition.
That dairy cows just "make" milk.
Cows aren't any different than the rest of the mammals. They make milk when they have a baby. Humans just take the baby away after it's born.
This is fairly obvious, but their young still get looked after, and *spoiler alert* the cows end up as burgers and leather after they've finished their usefulness as dairy cows.
That carrots improve eyesight. It was actually British propaganda from World war II, I think to explain how they kept on shooting down German planes at night, in order to conceal their invention of a new type of radar I believe. More funny than annoying, I just want to say it.

Not a myth per se, but the number of people who grossly misunderstand how evolution and natural selection works is crazy high.
Ostriches bury their head in the sand when confronted. The fact that Ostrich legs and claws are powerful enough to kill any predator makes a mockery of the myth. In actual fact, they don't make nests but bury their eggs in warm soft soil. They then frequently turn the eggs over in the ground to stop them overheating giving the appearance that they are sticking their heads in the ground from a distance.
MSG - a lot of people still believe it's basically poison. It's no more harmful than regular salt.
That margarine is "one molecule away" from being plastic.
Firstly, "one molecule away" makes no sense. It is a meaningless phrase.
Secondly, being "one atom away" is also meaningless, because a change in atomical structure means the substances are different.
A molecule of H2O has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. H2O is water.
H2O2 has two hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms. H2O2 is hydrogen peroxide.
But we don't caution against drinking water by saying that it's "one atom away" from being hydrogen peroxide, because that one atom completely changes the makeup of that substance. Water isn't "almost" peroxide or vice versa.
This is an oversimplification, obviously, but suffice it to say that you shouldn't take advice from someone who claims that margarine is "one molecule away" from being plastic. It's a complete misnomer.
I don't even like or eat margarine but this drives me up the freaking wall.
Anyone who ever drink dihydrogen monoxide will be dead sooner or later

That historical armor was basically useless, only increasing the chance of maybe deflecting a blow if you were lucky. You still see it in movies, shows and games where a knife or sword or arrow will go through armor like it's cardboard.
In reality armor was very useful. Very good armor, like a knight's suit of plate, made the wearer virtually invincible. The best plate could stop even early firearms. A knight in full plate and wielding a shield was pretty much the tank of the medieval battlefield. Doubly so if on horseback. Specialized weapons and a concerted effort was needed to defeat one, although typically no one would try to kill a knight since you can't ransom a corpse.
But even simple gambesons, which were made from layers of fabric, could resist a sword cut. High quality gambesons could resist all but the strongest cuts from specialized cutting swords.
Also: that swords were super heavy. A typical one-handed arming sword from the middle ages weighed around 3lbs, 4 max. A two-handed long sword could get up to 5lbs. Rapiers weighed around the same as other swords, which is contrary to popular belief.
Yes, swinging around a 3-4lb object would tire someone out, but the people doing so were generally more fit than the people reading this thread.
Piggybacking on this, the myth that the sword was the most important weapon on the medieval battlefield. Nope, your primary weapon was a sort of polearm - spear, lance if on horseback, halberd, pike, bardiche, naginata, you name it. The sword was actually the sidearm, the weapon you used after your spear broke or became ineffective (tight in melee, for example) or the one you took with you everywhere, even in context where you were unarmored. Sure, there are examples of fully armored knights fighting with two-handed swords, but that's sort of an edge case, because that usually requires a full plate harness and some specific circumstances to pull off and it's debatable wherever it doesn't straddle the border between sword and pole arm anyway, especially later examples, like the Zweihänder of the German Landsknechte, which was popular in the 16th century - those guys even had smaller swords (usually some type of messer) as sidearms to their swords...

The highest tax rate means your entire income is taxed at that rate
I HATE this one! It's used deliberately to reinforce the idea that the rich shouldnt be taxed somehow - yet it's usually perpetuated by people who are middle class at most (since a lot of the ultra rich either fully understand the tax system, or can employ people who do on their behalf). It's a mindset that leads to "you cant have a 75% tax rate because *when I'm earning more* you'll be taking more off me". Like the whole thing where people who were several tens of thousands of dollars off being affected were protesting because of some hyperthetical future pay rise they were going to someday maybe get.
That Napoleon was short. He was average height
He was about 5'7" in English measurement, 5'2" by French. Also he was affectionately dubbed The Little Colonel by his troops, likely because his bodyguards and some officers were taller. Another source says that when he was victorious in Italy, he was a young, inexperienced and relatively unknown officer so it was a derogatory moniker. Either way, the nickname stuck.
that myth about how nasa invented ballpoint pens for space while the USSR just used pencils... basically completely untrue
Einstein was bad at school math.
That one is interesting. Einstein went to school in Switzerland, where grades are opposite of other countries (in Germany i.e. 1 ist best, 6 is worst / Swiss 5 is best, 1 is worst). Einstein had a 4-5 in math, meaning the best to second best grade in swiss. It's just a Transmission error.
That you can spot-reduce fat. Far too many quacks on the internet talking about “toning” and “melting belly fat” with a hundred sit-ups a day.
sit-ups are bad for your back. No good physiotherapist would tell people to do sit-ups.
Black belts have to register their fists as weapons... I can't believe I was dumb enough to fall for that.
History is filled with this stuff, but I'm gonna go with general misconceptions due to an inability to read history in context.
Often if you read a funny and strange story where you go 'haha those dumb superstitious people in the past' in reality there isn't superstition behind it, there's politics and power. For example, if you hear of someone being excommunicated and declared a witch / heretic for some odd reason the truth is the given reason is just a made up excuse, and the real reason is political intrigue.
This was a good article - it was fun to read, and it not only reinforced a lot of things I'd already understood, it added to some things I hadn't heard of. The calendar item, for example. Well Done!

Very true, but it remains a pretty bad idea to knowingly have unprotected sex with an HIV positive person. Your chances do depend on the "viral load" of the infected person too. Higher load = higher chance of tranmission.
