They can't - they drop to the ground and bounce right back without hurting themselves because they're so light and fluffy. When they're all down, mama duck leads them to the nearest water.

MANY ducks nest in trees because of predators.. Wood ducks are famous for it. The mother literally tosses the babies out of the nest.

Actually, it's not Photoshoped. It's Common Goldeneye ducks in this picture :) You can find a lot of information about them on the internet, for example that " A female Common Goldeneye often lays eggs in the nest of another female, especially in nest boxes. Looks like the dog is trying to imitate that famous cat gesture it saw on TV now that he has finally seen one in real life. Cat looks confused, but kinda accepts to play along. Reminds me of when people get friendly with foreigners and get playful with stereotypes about their culture.

Several years ago, we has a big guinea fowl outside and a young kitten inside that would sit in the window watching that fat bird outside. Basically her entire kittenhood was spent in this window yearning to go play with that bird. When she got older, we finally let her out to discover the rest of our little farm and she walked up to that guinea a little too fast before realizing he was quite a bit larger up close than he had appeared to be through that window. She looked up at him, he looked down at her, and her face just kind of dropped and she slunk back into the house.

I wish I had gotten a photo of the reaction of my cat when she first heard thunder while outside on my patio. She ran into the house, and kept ducking and crouching, while looking up at the ceiling as if she were thinking "How did the air make that scary noise???" It was hilarious, despite having to calm her down.
