Beth Moon, a photographer based in San Francisco, has been searching for the world’s oldest trees for the past 14 years. She has traveled all around the globe to capture the most magnificent trees that grow in remote locations and look as old as the world itself.
“Standing as the earth’s largest and oldest living monuments, I believe these symbolic trees will take on a greater significance, especially at a time when our focus is directed at finding better ways to live with the environment” writes Moon in her artist statement.
Sixty of Beth Moon’s duotone photos were published in a book titled “Ancient Trees: Portraits Of Time”. Here you can have a sneak preview of the book, full of strangest and most magnificent trees ever.

On that one, i disagree about the black and white choice. Trees are magnificent in their colors, they express so much more of their life!
Black & white better highlights the textures, which is mostly what makes them interesting.
Load More Replies...Go to http://www.bethmoon.com/TouchWood01.html, she has the names under the photos and then you can Google the locale.
Load More Replies...The point of them being in black and white is to express their age. They are as old as time, so b&w gives them thus atmosphere. Big like!
Magnificent old beings. I love the black and white format. It helps show the detail in the tree's bark. It also helps imply age.
Amaizing!! They are so beautiful! Congratulations! Great subject!
I wish I knew where they were I'd like to see a few in person. B&W is nice but I disagree with the comments about the highlights & textures.
Beautiful, but it would be better if in each photo there was some sense of scale. It is only the ruins (Thai?) that show relative size.
These do not appear b&w to me, so many different gray values. These are stunning. Brilliant job by the photographer/artist
Stunning and captured beautifully! No colour required IMO, but I'd love to know what the trees are and where they are too!
Just amazing trees which r telling a lot of ancient history of the civilization ... Black & white photos showing its own beauty ... As an artist I always inspired by trees as it shows me as with composition of many human bodies & I made some paintings with concept of human life & generation ... Thanks for ur wonderful photographs ...
Magnificent work. She should come to Manabí province in Ecuador, S.A. We have the most ancient and sensuous Ceibo trees.
I would love to have a giant framed print of one of these for my living room.
I think they are all divine in presentation and would love to have a very large panel of several of those shown. Trees are awesome. They remind me of elephants. Massive and ancient.
Karl Brodowsky/Wikimedia Commons The world’s oldest known living tree sprouted sometime during the last Ice Age, roughly 9,550 years ago. This 16-foot spruce in the Dalarna province of Sweden may look more like a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree, but don’t be fooled: this little guy’s root system got started back when the British Isles were still connected to Europe by an ice bridge. According to Wired, geologist Leif Kullman, who discovered the tree, named it after his dead dog.
It would be nice if there was some info with these, like what kind of tree, where the photo was taken, how old is the tree, etc
Some remind me of trees on the island of Nevis.......love trees anywhere I meet them.
She used B&W and infrared for some of the photos, methinks. This brings out the form and shape better than full color. Memo to self: time to upgrade my old point and shoot camera.
The black and white is so much more dramatic than color, you look at the texture and shape rather than be distracted with colors.

How could you not provide location captions or even a list after the photos?
Yes, let's all waste our breath arfuing about whether they shiuld be in black and white or not.
I wish it included a little more info about each tree such as age, location, date taken, known history, etc. Other than that fantastic post :)
Just amazing. The forms that life takes are simply unimaginable by our human brains.
I love it I'm Color Blind but I'm A neon guy (big Time ) this Really helps thank's
Would like know the trees names and which in country they grew. I am a black and white photo fan, at the time we were interested in photography there were no such thing as color films, you had to make the best of light, shadows and composition to make your pictures talk, and that was not easy.
A location for each tree would be nice alongside the type of tree it is.
Interesting idea, nice shots. Unfortunately this massive use of photoshop screw-up everything.
Interesting idea, good shots, unfortunately this massive use of photoshop screw-up everything.
I wish there were something in each photo to provide some sense of scale. No idea if these trees are huge or small (but old).
These trees are beyond awesome. They display the patterns underlying the growth of their various species, not so apparent in young trees. Without color, these are made more apparent.
Great to see how human beaúties are overgrown by time. When will Rembrandts Nachtwacht be overgrown ?? Bob de Lange, Holland
These trees are in my country, in the island of Socotra. And there is the most beautiful.
These Trees are in my country, in the Island of Socotra. And there is the most beautiful.
I'd love to know a little more ....i.e. what is the name of tree, location etc. Otherwise the images are beautiful and b/w gives another dimension.
I am speechless. Stunning and spectacular. Tells about nature's complexities and wonders. Yes location of sites would have been helpful at the same place.
Fantastic photography. Good choice using B/W but it would also be nice to see them in colour as well.
These pictures and trees are truly amazing. What a beauty, nature at its best.
everyone has so much to b***h about. i think these pictures are bloody fantastic! i would just like to see captions of locations! inspiring!
awesome though I'd love have seen her photgraphs in color and where were the california redwood trees which are 100's of years old and tall!
awesome... though I would have loved seeing these trees in color which is much more magnificent and I would have loved seeing those giant
they are fascinating and beautiful but I would have loved to see the same pictures in color .
I agree with you ChantalePerron, and it also would have been nice to know what kind of tree it is and where it's from, don't you think.?
I am a tree lover/hugger & I thank you so much for showing some of the pictures from her book. These are awesome!!
These trees are magnificent examples of nature. My hats off to the photographer who recognized their beauty.
I really enjoyed every picture and scrolled through them several times. Would like to purchase the book.
Beautiful art work this really aw me God Bless the hand Crafter great work
The trees have incredible shapes. But the vision of the photographer puts them into a different plane. So ethereal.
Why must people critique in a closed minded way something shared that is so intimate to the photographer.
These are awesome. I would like to know what kind of tree and where they are. Not that I'm going to go find them just curious.
Beautiful.... and folks wanna destroy those environments that keep these giants alive?!
I love trees. These are the most amazing pictures that I have ever seen. Wow!
Wonderful, only B&W brings out the textures that color can distract. Seemingly to me, used filters with B&W film, like red or green.
I agree that the black and white shows the texture. It's also much more difficult to get this kind of quality photography without color.
I think the photographs are beautiful! Enjoyed them all. Doesn't matter how they were done. Beauty, after all, is in the eye of the beholder
very interesting is what i think. would live to know where a lot of these trees are, and what they are. :)
Here is one in color, with starts, splendid!!! http://www.bethmoon.com/DN016.html
Absolutely magnificent and stupendous. It brings tears to my eyes and cheers to my heart. Cynthia Allen McLaglen
Absolutely and stupendously magnificent! Bravo Beth Moon! It brings tears to my eyes and CHEERS TO MY HEART! Cynthia Allen McLaglen
Beautiful images. For those arguing about the photographer's artistic choices & methods: http://www.bethmoon.com/Process3.html
Ces arbres sont comme des ancêtres, ils portent tellement d'histoires et de sagesse. Merci.
The artist view is not my view I want colour who cares about black and white trees, obviously the artis did it for themselves no care for
I love all earthly plants, it would be best shown in colour I could marvel at the leaves their colour the colour of the trunks etc.
perfect choice for art geeks <.1% disappointing to all who will never witness their full glory as they truly exist. 99.9+% 14 yrs wasted.
I think she completely forgot the bristle cone pine out of the high Sierra Nevada which is the oldest living thing I'm told.
Maravillosas fotos, amo el B&W en fotografía, su textura resalta, los años dan majestuosidad. felicitaciones.
Extraordinary duotones! Amazing specimens. I wish there were more varieties. Sequoias. Pines. Maples. Birches. Is this a partial selection?
Couldn't care less what technique was used ... these are truly magnificent trees and the photographs capture that magnificence! Beautiful
Gosh! What a grand collection. An Avenue of tree pix!! Would be good if tree's names appeared in tiny font. Thanks to all involved.
I love all of these pictures of the trees... I've always love trees I look forward to seeing more!!!!
Wow, those photos are awesome. I did not know such trees exist. Thanks for sharing your work.
I agree if these were photographed in color so I can picture myself the awe, beauty of intricateness and strength in appearance.
Me gustaría que publicaran las fotos con la explicación de qué arbol es y donde fue sacada la foto al pie de cada una. Es importante!
Incredible work. These trees are amazing! Im glad I could see such beauty. Thanks to the artist.
I think these photos are amazing!!! Love the Balboa trees. Don't they grow on an island with really interesting creatures beyond the trees?
The Highlights & textures seem to be lost in almost every picture.
i wish to know what kind of trees they are and where they were photographed....
it`s beautifull & we really should take care of our trees and plant trees .
I THINK THEY ARE ALL THE MOST UGLY TREES I HAVE EVER SEEN….I HAVE BEAUTIFUL OAKS, MAPLES, DOGWOODS AND ALL SORTS OF BEAUTIFUL AROUND ME…
Thank you to this artist for her dedication and bringing such magnificent beauty to paper.i would have like to see this in full color nd b&w
AMAZING thank you for sharing the Photos with us... BEAUTIFUL,,, YOU GOTTA CHECK IT OUT...
Phenominal pictures...the last few Mother Life Trees left in the world...very bitter sweet feelings for me
has she photographed the oldest huon pine in Tasmania Australia that too is magnificent you need permission to go there location is secret
Trees=Terrestrial_monuments, men cannot beat this inexplicable beauty. Thanks 4 sharing. Like to touch all of them if they really exist. DS
Wow beautiful trees, they look surreal in b&w, colour would have been nice
wish they were captioned. I would like to know where they are and what kind of tree.
wish they were captioned. I would like to know what kind of tree...and where they grow
Wish she would have said SOMETHING about each tree. What Country, type, etc etc... But the are wonderful.
Th re should be a paragraph about each tree under the pictures says how old they are and when n when they were found. Other than that good.
Fantastic. So many historys each one could tell-us. Congratulations
These are magnificent monuments to time and the power of nature. Beautiful pictures! Thank you for sharing them with us.
Beautiful work. No comparison to others, as everyone is an individual. My dad was witness to greats and still loved all. Humbly appreciate.
Trees are our grand grand grand parents, and they will always stay alive, generously providing Love & Life from every cell of their beings.
A giant Japanese Pagoda tree in Edgartown is the oldest of its kind on our continent. http://mvobsession.com/2009/09/15/the-pagoda-tree/
My one request is that they have names and places where they grow. Some I recognize, but others are unique to their own little worlds. "???"
Love these images! Brings back the idea of hug a tree a day! kellyannartsalon.com
My deepest respect for the lovely pictures of these majestic giants. To all who complain - go and make it "better". I love the pictures.
Fascinating trees, the countries that they are in would be of interest to most viewers I suspect.
They are beautiful. I wish each were dated and perhaps where they grow captions were included.
One of the most beautiful projects of nature I have ever seen. The power and serenity of trees impress me incredibly
So many of the trees have grown in relatively hostile environments. I find that quite amazing.
Are you real hafing a problem about the colour???
All your fantasies are real..... Stay real ......
I see the infra-red now... and the platinum printing is amazing... Just incredible.... These are the types of photos I'd love to take..
Gorgeous. I think the choice of going black and white is extremely on point. I love the tonal differences..
They totally blow my mind, absolutely amazing. I'm in awe. Imagine how old these trees are, Think about all they ,have gone through.
Could I please know WTF I'm looking at? These trees are hundreds (thousands?) of years old, but I don't know how old or where or how...
The artist is the ultimate authority on their work - we are only allowed to view .............
@chantalePerron - I disagree with you . If this artist thinks black and white is right for the work who are you to question that ??
Knarly - twisted and beautiful . If it is possible to know a tree this lady does . Wonderful work
I'd love to have an old tree in my back yard. Well done, the black and white gives the picture mystery and a sense of calm, describes words
Having personally visited Angkor Wat was amazed at the size and width of some of these trees of which a few are in these photo's.
Classic.Having personally visited Angkor Wat was just amazed by the size and breadth of some of these ancient trees which are in thes photo
Thank you, photographer, for doing the traveling and picture-taking for me! You are as awesome as these wise, seasoned tree.
Beautiful pictures! I wish it said where the trees were. I was looking for the "Major Oak" of Sherwood Forrest. I don't think it's there.
I think you are all a load of pompous twits these trees are beautiful, they are not the subject of teaching session they are to be admired!
Just too beautiful to be true. But I know these aren't photos made vy human phantasie. This is the perfect art of nature. Live it
Magnificent photos, black and white reveals different perspectives that you can't get with colour!
I Love CO2. CO2 is life for trees and mankind. All the bark and all the wood is the conversion of CO2 into wood and oxygen.
Wow, all anyone wrote about below was the photographic technique! This trees are magnificent and I hope they continue to outlive us all!
Admire the wisdom and ancient time off the trees as it is shown, don't go on about what technique were use. Thk to the person that took it
This is a wonderful thing, incredible record of our wonderful world, thank you! Each tree speaks!
amazing! what a wonderful gift to us so that we can see the beauty in the world.
Some trees are spooky , yet they makes me happy :>I wish they last long forever . They're so beautiful .
LOVE THE PICS!! But i think it would B better if the books came In color&b/w like a color 1 & b/w 1 u could pick depending on ur preference
amazing photography....so difficult to capture the magnitude of these ancient giants! well done!
Beautiful subject, great photos! I'd love the artist to contribute to our nature themed google community at https://plus.google.com/u/0/comm
I think they are beautiful! What a wonderful way to help preserve and respect trees!
Majestic! Stunning! Makes me want to go see them for myself. Reminds me of the Live Oaks of Louisiana.
Colour would have been better, I find the black and white too "contrasty". It appears these are HDR B&W images. Great pictures all the same.
I would also add that Mr. Adams died in 84, so the previous person could have been one of his assistants, and he did have some.
He may have used a 90 Wratten (I know it was a wratten). While not IR, it would have had some similar effects: dark sky, etc.
Load More Replies...Also, at least some of these are infrared. And yes, infrared is often soft and grainy, but it depends on the medium. I've done IR work.
I have IR experience in both digital and film. And yes, I've done my own printing.
Load More Replies...Why are we arguing about black and white versus color? A great subject can and should be photographed in a variety of ways.
Good grief, why are we arguing about color versus black and white? A subject can be seen in a variety of ways and each have their own worth.
It would have been nice if they would have said where the trees are.
Splendid images of Magnificent trees. What is not to love about these silent observers of life on earth. B&W makes contrast. Color yes also.
Beautiful! I love all the very old oak trees throughout central Florida.
Why aren't these photos in color? An entire different dimention is lost with just black and white.
i love it!! the only thing missing, for it to be perfect is color, if you ask me. The black and white is taking half of the beauty of nature
and being me, and posting before reading the previous comments, i see that lots of you think the same :D Cool
Load More Replies...Black and white is perfect. Obviously some will prefer colour but for me there would have been no better choice. Astoundingly beautiful
Who gives a s**t about the technique. The subject is what's important.
Beautiful photos and inspirational woman! I just wish they had information and description to tell us where they are located, etc.
Non c'è incanto maggiore della maestosità di queste grandi piante. La loro naturale regalità commuove.
If you visit the artist's website you will read that her process is platinum printing. Incredible photographs.
When the photography is black and white you can make it your own with your imagination
You can read her actual process on her website. Very tedious work and the effort pays off.
Fantastic. I was hoping to see the mighty Oak in Sherwood Forest near Nottingham, England.
I adore old trees! I hug them any time I can. I had the pleasure of seeing 2 apricot trees that were over 100 years old. Amazing!
I absolutely adore old trees. I had the joy of picking apricots from a couple of trees that were well over 100 years old! I hugged them!!!
DER ANBLICK DIESER URALTEN BÄUME ERFÜLLT UNS MIT EHRFURCHT VOR DER NATUR UND DEM LEBEN - PETER SAUTER - WINTERTHUR - SWITZERLAND
I don't care if they are black and white, color, infra red, silver tone, or what ever. All I know is they are magnificent.
These photos are awesome. I wasted 10 minutes of my life reading your guys opinions. A mistake I do not plan on repeating soon...
Blah blah blah photo techniques - the images are awe inspiring. Thank you Beth, such beautiful images.
And though i love and adore the depth texture etc of bw..in color I'm certain i would love them too. So yay individual viewpoint
I love every image. I don't care what her technique or printing involve. I am happy that she presented us with her view of this beauty
vision, soulfulness, technical mastery...a significant gift to her audience. thank you beth moon!
I wouldve liked more info o where the pics where taken and what trees they where.
Black and white~ so we can see the texture, depth and light and many details that colors would just hide. Beautiful!
I'm no expert on photography, but these pictures are beautiful, no matter how they were created.
Prefer colour, my grey eyes don't need any emphasis on the highlights, textures or tones, the epic size does it so bring back the colour...
Prefer colour my grey eyes don't need emphasis on highlights textures or express more than what they are naturally! SoBring back the colour!
I love those Boab Trees you can see how the dinosaurs used them. In their black and white from they give out a magical touch of life's past
These trees are Huge n gigantic but how does she know its the worlds oldest tree.Go down to Africa, somewhere in Nigeria and you'l be amazed
This is what they really look like. http://www.lonetreephotoclub.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/P-203-C-Yes-Jesse-McLaughlin-Mossy-Tree1-res
Interesting trees. It would have been nice to have a description of the type of trees, where they were located, and their approximate age.
it's not about the technique or colour v. black and white - it's about the subjects and how beautiful they are - very moving to me -
Wonderful collection! Have a few more for you: Angel Oak in St. John's Island, SC, near Charleston and Banyan trees on the Big Island of Hi.
Fantastic! I'd like to know what kind of trees they are, and where they were found!
I for one love the imagery, play of light an shadow, and the chosen medium. Beautiful work.
kind of a geeks response page, nowhere near as interesting as the trees themselves or the photos.,but I'm a botanist!
I wish I hadn't started reading these comments. Love the photos, though.
Like its not real !!amazingly beautiful. I'l agree about the colours. Trees should be in colour because the colours make them even more bea
Comments on where these trees are and what they are would be nice. Beautiful photography, though! Stunning!
Magnificent! I'm moed nearly to tears by these ancient beings, inviting us humans to stretch our imaginations far beyond our years.
Color is good but the black and whites photo's makes it more visible to the eyes and it gives you more of a clue to how old the trees mayb
Very good; the link to Beth Moon web site at the top where there are details on the photos and some color photos for those who want them.
Absolutely magical, I can't get over the history they share and can you imagine if they could tell their stories and what they have seen....
I would have liked to have known where these trees were each found.....
"Remarkable Trees of the World" by Thomas Pakenham has color photos of many of the same trees and other amazing ones, I'm in love w/trees!
There's no reason to use infrared for effect. The trees are magic enough in their own.
Absolutely stunning and enchanting. The pictures are hauntingly beautiful.
Wha is wrong with you peopSo what if it's not REAL B&W. It's about how the person BEHIND the camera sees, feels & creates. They arebeautiful
It would be a boring world if we all took the same approach on capturing images.... Create, Be Yourself
Load More Replies...What is wrong with you people! It's all in the way the person BEHIND the camera feels, sees and creates. So what if it's not B&W, it's HER
I love looking at trees and they each is its' own entity and has its' own story. The black and white is very nice, in my opinion.
Did she mis the Tile of Linn village in Switzerland ...over 800 years old
Very inspiring. I have seen some good examples near my home in Canada on Toronto islands.
Beautiful. Imagine what they could tell us..yet think about what they do tell us...very wise old trees
We can no more view these realistical on a computer monitor than we could if they were platinum prints, silver prints or color prints.
Rather than being overtaken by color, the lack of it allows us to be emotionally moved by these beauties. Subject conveyed well! ♡
Rather than being overtaken by color, the lack of it allows us to be emotionally moved by these beauties
Simply stunning, profound and touching about the images and the standing beings themselves.
If You want take a spectacular foto, came to Elche city in Alicante, spain. Visit El Huerto del cura And look for La Palmera Imperial ;)
For those who would like to see color go to the photograper Beth Moons website http://www.bethmoon.com/index.html
Amazingly beautiful. Congratulations. Excellent conception, beautiful execution.
These photo are profound and beautiful in a way that words cannot express for me. Thank you for your contribution Beth Moon. God Bless You
These photos have a deep and profound emotional effect on me. Thank you Beth Moon. Stunning !!!
I am humbled at their magnificent! I have always loved trees and these made me cry. Can these photos be bought?
go with the original colors for the tree, but change the background to duo tone.
go with the original colors for the tree, but change the background to duotone.
It just goes to show you that God is very real who else can create such Beauty? Awesome! AMEN!
Incredible images. I'm not about to get into a color vs a B&W discussion. The PHOTOGRAPHER chose the medium and took the pics.
Black and white is the artist's choice, so it is fine; but a bit cliched. Adams himself bemoaned ever becoming "an imitation of himself."
Wow these photos are beautiful. I love trees, old and new and would love to be able to photograph them properly. I think theyre great photos
Wonderful Photography / processing .... REALLY WOULD love to hug them ☥
A dream assignment to travel the world and visit these amazing places and stand in the humbling presence of these ancient living monuments.
Thank you Beth Moon for your hard work, talented eye and relentless dedication in preserving these living legacies of planet Earth. Wow.
Who cares black or what. Thank you for sharing and giving me the opportunity to see something I would have never been able to view.
William Sinclair you took the words out of my mouth. Some people are only seeing what they are missing and missing what they are seeing!
William Sinclair you take the words out of my mouth! Some people are only seeing what they are missing and missing what they are seeing.
I love every photo in this album, true as ChantalePerron added colour would have expressed the brilliance of life. Spectacular nonetheless.
I would like to see the dialog shift to the trees instead of our color preference for the images.
What I am shocked about is the lack of commenting on the beauty, wonder and awe of the subject matter These are amazing trees!
Love this I am addicted to trees I intently look at each branch and root and I especially love ke winter trees because the soul of the tree
almost sepia. accentuates shape and form. colour- caught in that..missing early Earth memories when tree covered .
Its not black and white. Its almost sepia. It gives depth. Its meant for you to see the size and form. If it was colour- t'would be lost.
True. It would be fascinating if these were in color as well, but these are just amazing! Great technique! Great trees!!
I just loved the trees I feel that I was given a gift. And it would be so nice if people would just enjoy the gift they were given paulapin
These are amazing. I tend to enjoy B&W and sepia tone photos more then color to bring out texture and shading. For me, these are perfect
I thought I'd see one of the the 3oldest olive trees in the world. One is in my father's beautiful country of Bar, Montenegro by the Adriatic
Wow all the negative posts & everyone's entitled to the opinion ,the point missing is14 glorious years of enjoying and sharing it with us
Love them as they are- would also like to see these same trees in all the other techniques described and side by side- another artist/book?
Black and White has a certain style, but I agree that living entities are better represented in full color.
Beauties... mix of B&W and IR give an other dimension to those magnificent trees... a flare of old... would like tosee the rest of them :)
Some of you folks are making my head hurt. Try using your sense of sight without your sense of right. These photos look great
Color black and white I'm just happy someone took these pictures so I could see them.
You folks are making my head hurt. Just use your sense of sight and not your sense of right
I love these. B&W is one of the best ways to capture the spirit of your subjects. Strips away all distractions & you see the beauty within.
B&W definitely shows more contrast which aids in the first impression. I would like to see them in color as well so I could feel the image.
This is really fine work. B&W was definitely the way to go here. The level of detail, textures.... the bones of the trees, are what counts.
Beautiful...absolutely beautiful! Trees...my life passion. Please help protect these giants.
Simply Awesome. I added this link to my website. I also think the black and white photography added much to the experience. BRAVO!
Beyond amazing. I put this link into my plant website. Awesome shots and I LOVED the black and white photography. It adds everything!
¡¡ It's wonderfull, all history, if trees could talk !!. I woukld like to see them in their real colors too.
I love it that the photos are in black and white, but it would be nice to know what sort of trees they all are.
They are all majestic in their ancient grounds. Thank you so much for sharing them. Absolutely Magical!
They are just so beautiful , they make my heart sing. Just think we are apart of them and they are a part of us, and with out them we could
If you can agree that a photographer can be an artist then these are Beth Moon's interpretation of what she saw. An individuals view.
simply amazing beauty ;the highest secoia lately mesured would fit in how many picture of the site ?
I think these trees are awesome. Thank you for such an amazing post.
When I have to leave my School in 1978, me and my friends decided to plant some trees so that when ever we return back we may remember 1978
Trees are real Gods who keep on giving their best without asking for anything in return. Those who love and care trees are also Gods.
color or black/white is irrelevant when these trees are so incredible. These make me want to explore every cranny, dream, smile, feel.
Trees are really Gods. Who keep on giving us their best without asking anything from us. Evolved and civilized love them and care for tree
Glorious! I adore our ancient Trees ... thank you soo much for your wonderful dedication that allows us to see them! Amazing photography ...
sure would be great to know the species and age of the trees. Educate me.
Very moving. I wish it said what kind they are. Or what country. I'm betting I can't afford the book.
I have no words to describe how moving it was to see them. I wish it said what kind they are.
Don't mind the filter choice but I'm pretty sure these trees look completely different in living picture. True art is just being.
OOOOH! Thank you sooo much for taking these ... I LOVE TREES beyond words & the ancients are such a powerhouse of wisdom & life stories! xx
I don't give a fig if the prints are b&w. What they do tell me is that we need to appreciate their beauty.
Is there a place noted from where each tree pic was taken? I'm curious
All I know is I have never seen trees this size or shapes in my life ! Really enjoyed them!
All I know is I have never in my life time seen trees shaped , sized, this magnificent ! Just beautiful and I enjoy looking at them....rare
What do we as a species need to do to ensure that these trees and all life remains vibrant for future generations?
Loved the photographs! The black and white make the pictures so vivid. It must be amazing to see such trees in person.
LOVE! I just want to go to these places and hug them all!!! These are magnificent!
I love them all. I would love to go to these places and see them first hand and take pictures first hand and give them all hugs! love love!!
Incredibly beautiful! They look like they're reaching up to the heavens!
Where is the Angel Oak from Johns Island SC? Its over 200 yrs old. ??
For crying out loud! Color-B&W-Infrared! This is just way of seeing these trees. There are 100 more! Let's enjoy this way for now! Lovely!
I was extremely disappointed that the names and locations weren't displayed. Otherwise, exquisitely beautiful haunting images.
I was extremely disappointed that the names and locations weren't displayed. Otherwise, exquisitely beautiful haunting images.
For crying out loud! Color-B&W-Infrared! This is just one way of seeing these trees! There are 100 more! Let's enjoy this way for now! LOL
I enjoyed your photos very much,......I love trees and many of the ones you showed today I have never seen in my 76 years . Thank you for po
I can't wait to show my friends these stunning photos. Trees are some of the most evolved forms of e.n.e.r.g.y. on this sweet planet
Beth Moon has gifted us with a glimpse of the past, present and future and has captured her subjects old souls with great dignity. Thanks!
Beth Moon has gifted us with glimpses of the past, present and future and has captured these old souls with great dignity. Many thanks Beth.
Would love to travel to see all of these wonderful trees. What a journey that would be to see how God has give us so many gifts of nature.
The comments go to show we can't please everyone!!! Photography will always be a personal choice just like life is a personal choice! KISS
What do I think??? Well those are some fantastic trees...I would like to see them in person...I can feel the power of these trees as I look
I love trees myself. These are so beautiful they are a shining example of Mother Nature at her best:)
Hopefully these ancient giants will be protected from poachers and woodsmen .
So other worldly! I only wish there were captions. I would love to know what kinds of trees they are and where they are.
I like the near infrared photography. It leaves a peaceful, otherworldly impression. It also looks quite nice in winter time.
Amazing trees and wonderfully amazing photos, too. I also appreciate the b/w versions.
Totally amazing! I love photographing trees and putting them in either black and white or Sepia. Truly amazing shots!
She spent 14 years shooting ... she can print as she pleases..... beautiful work! !!!
No word exist to express their beauty. They grew in the silence of the life time.
They are some of the most sublime, expressive things that have ever lived.
I love these photos. I only wished the photographer indicated the locations of the trees.
I completely understand why she chose black and white for photos of historic trees: It resembles illustrations of prehistoric animals.
Best comment: "Anyhow most mammals see B&W only". Yeah, I'm sure the photographer took these for most mammals other than humans to enjoy.
The most amazing trees I've ever seen. What a treasure! Gives new meaning to the word tree house.
Why argue about the color? Just look at the trees. They are still there so if you want to snap a pic with your phone you can. Sheesh.
I love the old trees, great job to the photographer/artist. The pics do not appear b&w to me. Different gray values make details pop!
Much better in colour. If you have the originals in colour I would love to see them.
Beautiful. The B&W tells a completely different story they have to tell beyond being an old wise tree. And color would tell another one too.
These photos are magnificent. These are of the race of Ents in Tolkien's " Lord of the Rings". Black & white emphasizes their mystery.
Just breathtaking! It was a good choice to use infrared to accentuate the details of these monoliths.
If people took the time to research the work, they would understand that they are Platinum prints. It raises the bar far higher than B/W.
I love the pics, but wish the tree species were identified, & maybe have a basic location included.
These aren't in Black and White. If you take the time to research Beth Moon's work (instead of just complain) you'll learn about Platinum.
The angles used, the time of day, & sky conditions offer a dramatic feel.
Outstanding! Took me back to Ansel Adams. The superb richness depth and texture of black and white.
The photos capture the magnificence of the trees, likely due to the angle from which they were photographed and the time of day.
absolutely breathtaking! Love the black and white....it really puts the focus on the tree itself
Fantastic beautifull things!! under appreciated in the world we live in !!
excellent work. I Totally support the artist. great textures, highlights and also shapes. couldn't be better. would buy the book.
I think your works are amazing. I enjoyed looking into each and every picture. Love the black and white! Thank you for sharing the beauty.
Spectacular photos of these living giants! The only thing that would make this slideshow better would be to add location and type of tree.
fantastic, there are ancient olive trees in the garden of the church of All nations in Jerusalem...
I would love to see these prints in person. wonder where and when she might be showing them?
Phottos are black and white because you dont pay for them, is onest like this
photos are black and white because you dont pay for them! is onest like this
I love the black and white. One tends to see what may have been missed when in color - kudos to the talented photographer.
If you don't like her format, quit complaining and go take your own pictures!
I love the black and white - they are stunning and without color to draw the eye, one sees so much more - thank you for sharing your talent.
B&W is the more difficult photo medium because all you have to work with are shadows and texture. Great photos!
I think it's a hoot that folks are complaining about her choice of black and white. They should go take their own pics.
Why are people so damning, these prints are absolutely stunning, however the artist has chosen to present them. I love them all! :)
Absolutely beautiful , black & white is all that is needed to bring the best out in them, sorry I disagree about being in colour.
I wish some info had been added to each such as the location of the tree, county, type of tree(if possible) ect.
I will have to capture each countries oldest tree in high res colour and k8 vid :-)
Boredpanda does artists a disservice by omitting their titles for their pictures. I prefer to go to the artist website! http://www.bethmoon.
Humans see colors. Trees express them selfs in color. Humans have freedom of expression. The mind makes mental choices. I like color! :-)
Humans see colors. Trees are not -in black and white-. Human minds try to embellish what is already perfect in nature. ( = OK too). :-)
OMG! Why not, just accept it?! They are great pictures of great trees, in black and white!
Those pictures are wonderful. There is no doubt about it. But I don`t want to know about the carbon spent in travels to obtain that result.
Trees are beautiful and magical things and this just enhances that.
I'd like to have some of that twisted bark when it falls off to use as an art piece indoors. It's unbelievable what you have to pay for a st
We have a this Big tree in Sri lanka at Mannar district , but not like this much big , anyway trees are always very important to Human
I love the multi-tonal effect. I just wish the photog would have included the name/location of each tree in the article.
Gorgeous! If man would worship the trees and water, instead of money and false idols, there would be world peace.
I can't think when I see this! it takes my breath away, I love trees and this grabs my heart. Is there a publication of this fotos???thanks!
They would of looked amazing in their true colours but they still look superb in b+w.. Thanks for sharing, wouldnt have seen them otherwise
Very Ansel Adams, lovely images but I half agree with Chantale, I think the shots should have been done in both color and black and white.
wish for Life colour ... although d drama of white on black enhances their majesty works of love & Nature ~
Were is EL TULE from Oaxaca one of the oldest trees in the world.
Wish the photos were labeled with where they were taken and what they are. I know many were taken in Madagascar of the Baobabs.
The photographs are gorgeous. I just wish they were labeled with the kind of tree, how old it is, and where on Earth it's located.
I love them exactly as they are! Thank you for sharing your work. Absolutely beautiful. Wishing you all the best for the New Year. :)
Beautiful and mystical. I could sit and look at each one of them all day and wonder. They are fabulous and beautiful photographs. Thank you
Magnificent....love every picture. Thanks to the photographer. A worthy mission!!!
Love the richness of it all and the stories they tell....wish they could tell us what they've seen and heard!
Well done madame and what a beautiful journey you must have had xxxxxx
amazing pics - black and white or not the subject is still the same it's the photographers choice. Can't take away they are fabulous trees
Sry, but all i'm thinking is what are these picture printed on? Paper? Best be recycled or somethin else. 'cause that would mighty silly imo
Stunning, amazing, beautiful.... wise. Thank you for being so inspired as to take beautiful photos of these amazing trees, for us. Thankyou
Amazing. Majestic. I've seen 1200 years old tree and all I could feel was respect and humbleness.
Powerful images as they are. From a person with a firm grasp of composition and lighting. Beautiful, serene and majestic!
Amazing images as they are. Through the lens of a person with a firm grasp of composition and lighting. Beautiful, serene, and majestic!
Phenomal work, kudos to the artist that immortalized these "survivors". These are the most beautiful tree photos I have ever seen.
That is awesome. I do agree with you on your point Chantale Perron.
I love the pictures being in black and white because there ancient tree and when I here the word ancient I think of black and white!!!
I LOVE these pictures! I do a lot of photography and would give just about anything to do what she does!! Love the black and white.
I think that these trees speak more wisely than any human I've ever listened to!!!!
Great pictures, however, where are they? What is the species? Approximate age of each tree pictured? Oh, so many questions…answers?
I think these photos are great in black and white, but processed well ( not overdone), colour would serve better I think.
It would be interesting to have all the pictures I n both color and black and white . That would be a great contrast.
How funny it would be , If I could climb up all these ammazing and gigantic trees !
Amazing trees it's as though they all have their own unique personality.
What is that door between the two trees? And the lamp too?? The most!!
Go to her site http://www.bethmoon.com/ the pics are in colors, just not the ones you expect.
I wish they prints were in color and she stated where each tree is located; i.e. what country.
Stunning B&W captures the monumental character of these trees, some look to b over a thousand years old
What wonderful pictures, I love theblack and white. What a lucky lady that she has had the privilege to photograph these masterpieces.
this is an amazing collection of work! the black and white photos give the allure and mystic power they posess. simply stunning!
Absolutely beautiful, but I bet she never went to Poland, there are some gorgeous very very old trees in the cemeteries and parks.
I love it in black and white, but would love to see color too. I love these pics! Great job!
Amazing artwork, but besides missing their vibrant colors, I also would very much like to know where in the world they are.
I imagine the book will tell the age, location and a story about her experience with each tree. She is blessed to be their messenger.
They are the baobab trees of Madagascar I believe...truly magnificent!
I really am enjoying the B&W however I would like to know what types of trees they are and country of origin........
Would love to have seen captions as to where these beautiful trees are.
I wish there were captions by the photos so we know where these beautiful trees are located.
The beauty that is captured in every photo is absolutely amazing!! I love them all!! Great job!! :)
Thank you, Ms Moon, for all your time and effort to show us all that. Those are magnificent examples of nature's structural balance.
i think you should elaborate on the trees & let us know what we are looking @ also their location, but ----there very beautiful als
I love the majestic portraits of these Trees ! I love the etheriel feel and ancient glory, Thank you so much for sharing !
I you require color for your little brains to function properly you don't belong here.
Trees are among my favourite living things. I love this and find the choice of black and white focuses the eye on texture, size and shape.
These are absolutely amazing, in black/white - the structures stand out from the surrounding. They are magnificent -- I would love to one!
I would love to have a color for comparison in my mind's eye. I think location would be great. Talk about comparison, a true visual & photo
I love the B&W but would also like to see a color comparison. You can draw both visions in my mind's eye.
Incredible work. She also photographed Pando, I'm assuming... I hope... The oldest living thing on earth? Aspen clone forest in SW Utah.
Incredible. She did photograph Pando too, I'm assuming... I hope... The oldest living thing on earth? Aspen clone forest in SW Utah.
Some captions would be nice. What kind of tree, where it was photographed.
i think the vintage colors go with the theme here. plus it makes the trees and their surroundings more mysterious.
Everybody's an art critic all of a sudden. So comfy on your ample arses flipping through fb having done absolutely nothing original
I LOVE TREES! These are beautiful. Clearly old, but is not sure about ancient. The oldest tree is recorded to be four hundred years old.
We create colour in our minds it's actually a figment of our imagination
BTW the book provides the scientific name for each tree and their common name.
A majestic and beautiful B&W masterpiece devoted to ancient trees!!!! I am captivated by how the photos give me a feeling of nostalgia!!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arc7OGjmb20&list=UUzXvlk5vV9GZQpus2AeNfPw
Majestic and a beautiful B&W master piece showcasing ancient trees. Every photo moved me in a nostalgic way!
Some are very good - most look like point and shoot and not too much thought into the light or composition.
I would really have preferred labeling, species, location, approximate age; I did think the photos were wonderful (no color needed).
This is the work of Beth Moon. She doesn't shoot in black & white. She using platinum printing techniques of the old masters. Archival work
Those pictures are wonderful. There is no doubt about it. But I don`t want to know about the carbon spent in travels to obtain that result.
