Jimmy Kimmel Asked A Stupidly Simple Geography Question, And These People Still Managed To Fail

Americans have a reputation abroad for being somewhat insular, and that is putting it kindly. Perhaps it’s a lack of curiosity, education or just being told over and over that the USA is ‘exceptional,’ but for some reason there is just a startling lack of knowledge about the world as a whole, and nothing better illustrates that than Jimmy Kimmel asking people to name a country on the world map.

Now it’s not a specific country Kimmel was asking these L.A locals to identify. They weren’t being asked to pick out Sao Tome e Principe on the map. They were asked to identify any country, anywhere, take your pick out of all 193 of them. Some had to be reminded that Africa is a continent, while others couldn’t even find the United States. One guy thought that Alaska was Greenland. It’s literally your own country dude!

Luckily, one young boy was there to save the day and remind us that there are still people out there with the desire and ability to connect with the world around them. He showed up the adults by rattling off the names and locations of a variety of nations.

So what? You may think, it’s just geography. For many people however this is no laughing matter. As the U.S exerts its military and political influence on the world, citizens in whose name it purports to act have no clue about what and where things are going on. It’s pretty scary actually. Scroll down below to check it out for yourself, and explore! Be curious! Discover the beauty of the world we live in!

My thoughts exactly. Since when has "hilarious" become synonymous with "sad" or "tragic"? (Although, I do admit my geography is not the best either)

That is just so scary - how can these people vote in a president who promises to build a wall between their country and another country when they dont even know where their own is.

I think they used a map in which the USA is NOT at the center on purpose. Most maps used in us public schools are American centric, which clearly throws these idiots off when their country is not at the center of the globe. Terrible. Spoken as an American who went to public school, btw, and I can definitely name more than one country on that map lol

That's what I noticed too, it truly teaches a lesson. Sadly, where I live, we're taught that the USA believes to be above anyone else. This kind of post only reassures this belief, which is sad (and stereotyped I suppose)

Do they have any idea, that there is a whole big world outside the USA? It`s pretty shocking that they couldn`t find such countries like Russia, Australia, Japan, Iceland, Italy... I mean Russia is HUGE, how can you miss it?

Or Canada, second biggest country in the world, located right above them and connected by land or even Mexico, their neighbors to the south.

I remember that in 7th grade geography lessons we spent very much time to learn geography and names of all the states of the United States of America. I did not understand why because I knew that many of the American people did not even know where our country (Finland) was. It felt like it was unfair that we had to learn everything about their country and they did not have to learn anything about our country. :D Now I feel proud that I know much more about geography than most of the American people.

When I was in Mexico some American said that Tulum was 'just a bunch of rocks' and when I told him I was from The Netherlands he asked me: 'so do you speak Scandinavian then?' I convinced him that in The Netherlands there is a team of little boys doing shifts holding their finger in a hole in the dyke so that it doesn't break. He believed me.

I really appreciated that 'bunch of rocks' I saw in Tulúm and Chinchén Itzá too. Well, I'm from Italy but I'd never consider them as simple rocks, maybe it's a different point of view. But, wait, I did not see those little boys when I was in The Netherlands!

We don't really teach geography as a subject, anymore. It's not on the test...when you teach to the test (which the government says we have to) you only get what's on the test. so sad

Ok, I could DEFINITELY name at least the US, Mexico, Canada, Greenland, and Iceland. My geography is definitely not that great but I do know the difference between a country and a continent. My school never really focused on geography, it focused on religion (I went to a catholic middle and high school, but public elementary) so I spent most of my school years memorizing the names of the books of the Bible and the sections, the only other thing I majorly focused on was decathlon, in middle school, and I focused on logic...so yeah I was HORRIBLE at geography but i can do better than them. Kudos to the little boy though.

Honestly, I have gotten tired of these "look how dumb Americans are" videos. Guaranteed they are only showing the funny responses, so how much can we really learn from this? Yeah, okay, maybe the average American knows less about geography than the average something-else. Maybe. And if that's true, the people in charge of the education system should probably do something to fix it. But the rest of us, after four or five videos like this, we're just watching them so we can feel better about our own country or our own personal level of knowledge. I'm probably going to watch it, so I'm not judging anyone else for watching... I just think we shouldn't judge America so hard, either. I'm sure that with enough tries you could make a video like this one almost anywhere.

We had a segment on a Canadian comedy show called Talking to Americans. The host would travel to different American cities and ask them questions about Canada. It was hilarious. Our AP English teacher made it part of our class everyday. To remind us we weren't the centre of the universe.

I am an American who lives in New Jersey (not that many foreigners would know where that is) and my point is do not believe everything you hear. I am a college graduate and could name many countries on that map as well as foreign cities, Canadian provinces and all of the continents. I worked in an elementary school for 18 years and can assure everyone that our students are taught world geography when they are young. In my computer lab the students played a game weekly to fill in as many countries on the globe as possible, quite successfully. I do not watch the Kardashians and never have. We do have ignorant people in my country but I assume all countries do. Also, keep in mind that this tv show is filmed in California, which is a "country" of its own.

This clearly shows the low level that a medium american citizen has. Sometime ago I read that a big portion of americans can't even pinpoint England, the land where the first pilgrims came from! Our national public schools were by far better than this, but that was long ago... now we are heading toward this level. Very sad.

I didn't learn geography in high school because I had to drop out to work. College didn't work out because the infantry took up most of my day and night. But I could name quite a few countries because I was curious. I learned when I could. The kid would beat me but I wouldn't have been embarrassed on video.

Seeing as it's a really big country, with damn many people and one of the most important ones when it comes to international trade and military might, saying "not all of us" and "quite a lot" is still pretty scary! What good is it if small, unimportant countries would know that but the big, powerful one is filled with people that aren't educated about the world?

They ask people in the street all sorts of basic questions, which none of them can answer, and which shows people's total ignorance of the world around them. It's in the US of course. Not that I would be able to name each and every country on the map now - I might slip up a few of them - but I'd still know where the US, Russia, South Africa and dozens of other countries are XD Hopefully there are also enough Americans who do know those countries ^_^

The education system inn America simply does not include any geographical information after a very young age, and even then it is quite fleeting. Even that small part of the curriculum barely includes anything outside of the USA. So you will find if you show most Americans a map of America, and zoomed in to not include anything on either side, they will be able to rattle off all the states easily enough. So yes it is a bit frightening to see, us African and European and Asian and Pacific nations, but it is hardly an indicator of a "dumb" group of humanity. Simply unexposed to certain facts.

Sad... just sad... People having no knowledge of where they are in the world, or their surroundings. I could likely point out some 30-40 major countries on a blank map, possibly more, including the continents, general regions etc... That was just common knowledge when i went to school to know these things... what happened??

I feel really sad for the ex teen USA girl, where she was treated so badly after a similar mistake while under so much pressure...now this kind of thing is a joke? My favorite thing about America is their national pride. Highlighting this kind of thing is making a country a joke, if the show was in another country it could be teasing for laughs, but no, we recall what we know, what we bothered to learn or where properly taught. I do hope that as one commenter said "it was a lark" for all involved, as Miss Upton ended up very depressed being held accountable for the intelligence of the teens of America.

I had to learn the states of America in 5th grade and the countries of Europe, Asia, and Africa(we also learned Australia and New Zealand but those are weird) in 6th grade. This article also makes me question how many people know where other states, besides the one they live in are, per say Montana or Idaho.

Remember--this is SHOWBIZ!!! They only shared the clueless answers. Who knows how many correct answers were provided? We absolutely study US and world geography in US schools. However, many people only remember what's "important" from their viewpoint. These outtakes show the narrow mindsets of a selection folks on the streets of LA. However, I live and work in a Trump supporting county, and most of my high school students have forgotten world geography.

Look, I'm American. I know for a fact that there are a damn lot load of people who actually know a significant amount of geography. I can probably bet that this video only took out clips of the few who genuinly did not grow up with this knowledge. It's videos like these that make other countries look at us like we're idiots. Also keep in mind that the American educational system took out geography from schools. Why? I have absolutely no clue, but I can assure you guys that many of us can 100% tell where our country is even without those courses...

They specifically picked a map different from a map typically shown in schools. (Thos one is split in the Atlantic Ocean, not Pacific. They also did not show the Great Lakes. Which would have given away the US. While I agree anyone with 3 brain cells could have taken a moment & figured it out, I also feel they not only showed the most idiotic people, but set it up for failure.

How? You ask. They are all a product of Godless progressive, liberal academia and indoctrination. You reap what you sew. The results of an endless diet of MTV, CNN, ABC, NBC and MSLSD... Ironically, liberal Jimmy is exposing the very results his platform supports. As for the author of this piece, Gerda Lukošiūtė, who is likely an American hating euro-liberal herself, doesn’t reveal these idiots we’re exclusively selected during the editing process. The fact that almost half of the voting population supports corrupt socialist candidates are a reflection of the rampant, brainwashed population. Regardless, Gerda, at least most stupid, misguided, brain dead Americans have a higher standard of living that most other countries. Hell, America is so great that people that hate it won’t leave...

What good is it if small, unimportant countries would know that but the big, powerful one is filled with people that aren't educated about the world?

However, many people only remember what's "important" from their viewpoint. These outtakes show the narrow mindsets of a selection folks on the streets of LA. I'm pretty sure they edited out the majority and just showed the dumb asses. It's what passes for funny nowadays.

I'm not surprised in the least. I've known many people from LA and New York and they can be very ignorant of anything outside their microcosm? (area), because the sun rises and sets on their city in their mind, do the same thing in a small Midwestern town or rural area and the results would be different.

They must be only showing the people who don't know, though the fact that they don't is really sad - and funny!

It is interesting to notice that whereas America tries to rule the world, a lot of its own population (as it appears to be on this short experiment) cannot even point a single country on the world map. Yeah, USA is a joke!^_^

This is beyond imagination. I knew there were ignorant people out there, but level of stupidity presented here is something I cannot cope with. How did they finish elementary school?! (Yes, I was taught geography at my elementary school, only to exceed the knowledge in high school.)

I don't think you can base your judgement about American education based on this video. Obviously they only showed the ignorant people, otherwise it wouldn't be so funny. What's the fun in people naming the correct countries all the time? OK, maybe some Americans can't name some foreign countries, but if you ask an European to name 20 American states they would look like complete fools too.

How do you like your Public Education system now America? The fatter and dumber you get, the happier and richer the 1-percenters become. If you don't think the movie Idiocracy (2006)is coming true - just look at all the morons that voted Republican (yuk yuk well Chloe-may, if we vote for that good looking Trump guy, he promises to make our $18,000 job down at the pig wash pay almost double - well that's like thirty, no more like forty, it's like, well it's darn big number, we'll be rich like those suit fellers huk huk huk).

How many people did they go through who could do it to find this group who were absolutely clueless? This isn't a randomized survey. It doesn't necessarily represent anything other than that there are some dumb people out there when it comes to certain topics.

How?

Well, here in Canada, we still have some royalist idiots who wave the British flag. My guess is that the vast majority of 'em couldn't even show us where Merrie Olde England is on the map...
