The medical world is second to none. Just last year, for example, a 34-year-old old man developed an allergy to cold air. There was also a Brazilian fella who surprised his doctors with having three kidneys. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There are plenty of memorable cases that continue to surprise us to this day. And you can find most of them on the subreddit r/MEDizzy. It's an online community created for medical professionals to discuss everything and anything that crosses their minds (or operating tables) and it has seen quite a few interesting posts during the 3 years of its existence. Here are some of them.

James Harrison The "Man With The Golden Arm"
After needing 13 liters of blood for a surgery at the age of 13, a man named James Harrison pledged to donate blood once he turned 18. It was discovered that his blood contained a rare antigen which cured Rhesus disease. He has donated blood a record 1,000 times and saved 2,000,000 lives.
Thank for your life saving donation. One of the best gifts you can give.
General practitioner, medical researcher, and founder of PrimeHealth Clinical Research, Iris Gorfinkel, M.D., told Bored Panda that it might be just a matter of time before we get many more cool medical cases. "I'm excited about a few things," she said. "Let's start with wearable technology. I think this has tremendous importance in medicine. Say a person checks their own blood pressure and brings those readings to the doctor. Blood pressure is a huge thing. It's a major cardiovascular risk factor that is responsible not only for heart attack, but it can also be responsible for stroke, kidney disease, and vascular damage."
"The problem is when patients come into the office, they're nervous, they're sometimes fatigued, they're sometimes depressed, or anxious. And all of these things can cause the blood pressure to go up and give us artificially high readings. But imagine when a patient comes in with a reliable wearable (and I say reliable because the wrist ones are not ready for primetime) ... Then instead of focusing just on the one reading that I get in my office, I'm faced with a dozen readings, so I can get to a better conclusion about whether or not this person should, in fact, be treated."
This Man Is A Hero
Maurice Hilleman developed vaccines for measles, mumps, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, chickenpox, meningitis, pneumonia and Haemophilus influenzae, among many others. He saved more lives than any other scientist during the 20th century.
and yet people refuse to take them because of mindless conspiracy theories
Before And After Surgery For Blount's Disease
Really happy for her to be able to stand and walk. Modern surgery techniques are awesome.
Another thing Gorfinkel is psyched about is messenger RNA technology. "Most people think about mRNA only in terms of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines. True, they've saved millions of lives at this point. But I think we can look forward to years in advance where they'll continue to save millions of lives, and not just from COVID but from other diseases as well," the doctor said.
"Here's a little-known factoid: messenger RNA research began 30 years ago ... Pfizer was focusing their research on influenza, prior to COVID, and when the pandemic began, they basically pivoted to all the efforts on COVID instead. However, they are returning to that research on influenza ... and with the messenger RNA technology, we could maybe even come up with a universal influenza vaccine that's long been a goal of medical science."
The Medical Staff Of An Organ-Donation Operation Bow To Pay Tribute To 17-Year-Old Female Organ Donor Who Has Saved Multiple Human Lives
It would be bitter-sweet. Whilst one person had lost their life, others have been saved.
Incredible Well Performed Face Transplant
There's another technology that might be coming to a doctor near you which can really accelerate the use of various handheld devices. "Imagine ultrasound technology in a GP's office," Gorfinkel said. "Right now, when GPs want to know what's happening in a person's body, they have to send them to a separate radiology lab where they have to make an appointment, and sometimes wait weeks to get that appointment, and then come back for their answers. But imagine in very Star Trek fashion that a doctor could pull out an ultrasound probe. It should allow us to take a look at our phone and diagnose things like ectopic pregnancy, diagnose why a person has a heart murmur, diagnose acute appendicitis, pneumonia... And if you think I'm talking Star Trek, actually, I'm not. This technology exists. And medical students in modern schools are being taught how to use it."
The doctor said that even though it might sound paradoxical, she's most excited about changing the mundane. The steps that might seem simple can often snowball into big differences.

The moderators of the subreddit were also kind enough to have a little chat with us about the content they curate. "The r/MEDizzy community connects premeds, medical students, nurses, doctors, paramedics, people who want to pursue medical careers in the future, as well as regular medical passionates who are interested in medicine," they told Bored Panda.
Together, they share all kinds of information but according to those in charge of the subreddit, the most popular topics on r/MEDizzy could be categorized into two groups: medical cases, published by those who have a medical background, and posts in which non-medical subscribers share cases of themselves or their family members.

This Photograph Shows The Dramatic Differences In Two Boys Who Were Exposed To The Same Smallpox Source – One Was Vaccinated, One Was Not.
If smallpox was still around today, I don't think there would be an antivaxxer movement. But smallpox was declared eradicated worldwide by World Health Organisation in 1980. However countries all over the world have frozen samples of smallpox frozen in laboratory storage. It could once again get out. Lab leaks can and do happen. (Cough, cough, Wuhan! Cough.)
Load More Replies...Yeperooney! @Batgirl, some older folks I grew up around had the scars. While the mortality rate was about 30-50% (depending on age, type, etc.), it was a horror for them, and excruciatingly painful. They still talked about hte pain forty years later. Fifty. Sixty. They wept to see my vaccination mark on my arm and hugged me so glad that I'd be spared.
Load More Replies...@Debbie Burton, with all respect, if I may say, as an MD? Who considered infectious diseases as a specialty long ago? Read a book. Better yet, read a church register of the dead from smallpox. Go see some kids blinded by measles complications. Check out a Covid ward (unmasked, as you likely prefer)... We don't need the vaccine NOW in 2021 b/c people worked for centuries to eradicate this horror from the planet. Don't be snide. Be grateful that people fought for that goal. And STUF.
Load More Replies...And this is why my parents had us vaccinated and why I did the same for our kids and then had Covid vaccine
they’re both awful diseases that killed thousands??
Load More Replies...Smallpox was an incredible burden for humanity. We have science, and scientists, to thank for the fact it is no longer with us. Thousands of dedicated people saved millions of lives by giving their time and efforts to the vaccination programme.
I really hope they weren’t purposely exposed. That would be totally inhumane.
Medical research wasn't the same back then... although things like this still happen in some places.
Load More Replies...Does anyone know why the pox seem to be concentrated more on his arms and face, while less in his chest? Can't see the whole body of course, but was that how it was? Does it have to do with scratching or anything? Smallpox was before my time.
It starts on the face and arms then spread to body.
Load More Replies...The anger that sick boy must feel because his parents did not have him vaccinated (for whatever reason)
I think this is back when they were first developing the smallpox vaccine. Not sure of these two boys were part of the testing process, but in any case the vaccine would not yet have been widely available.
Load More Replies...We'll stop with the Trump bashing when MAGAts crawl back under their rocks or their mother's skirts and STFU, as morons in a modern society ought to.
Load More Replies...As I said with the tetanus photo; I think anti-vaxxers believe that preventable diseases are like having a cold, otherwise I can't imagine one would refuse a vaccine.
Surprised at the ignorance on this thread. So dissapointing, Pandas. Educated yourself. Proof tho, that the answers to Skara Brae are so true. Those who think vacinnes and covid are bunk are not moved by this photo. They are gleefully content in their stupidity. What a shame.
And to think, this was given to American Indians ON PURPOSE by the US government...
Not true. In fact, the US government made a special effort to vaccinate American Indians. "In this analysis of the genocide rhetoric employed over the years by Ward Churchill, an ethnic studies professor at the University of Colorado, a "distressing" conclusion is reached: Churchill has habitually committed multiple counts of research misconduct—specifically, fabrication and falsification. While acknowledging the "politicization" of the topic and evidence of other outrages committed against Native American tribes in times past, this study examines the different versions of the "smallpox blankets" episode published by Churchill between 1994 and 2003. The "preponderance of evidence" standard of proof strongly indicates that Churchill fabricated events that never occurred—namely the U.S. Army's alleged distribution of smallpox infested blankets to the Mandan Indians in 1837. The analysis additionally reveals that Churchill falsified sources to support his fabricated version of events." https://quod.lib.umich.edu/p/plag/5240451.0001.009/--did-the-us-army-distribute-smallpox-blankets-to-indians?rgn=main;view=fulltext
Load More Replies...gosh, that's way more disgusting looking than i thought it was
Too bad Covid isn't so visually disturbing. If it made your face look like a bag of burnt popcorn or gave you a vestigial horn in a weird place, there'd be far fewer anti-vaxxers.
Load More Replies...this is a super virus imagine the stuff we have today everybody shoud be thankful that we only have covid not smallpox
Anti-Vaxxers are just gonna say the kid on the left is the one who got the vaccine.
Typical. No sources listed anywhere that I can find. Not pro vax and not anti-vax. I just want the damn data. If you want to convince people of anything, you need to post sources. Who exposed them? Why? All ethics aside... where is the documentation? I'm finding conflicting articles, but no actual documentation. The OLDEST story I can find regarding this photo was from 2015 and was written in Russian. The story is that the boy on the left was 100% unvaccinated and the boy on the right was partially vaccinated the day before exposure. The stated goal was to understand the length of time it took for vaccines to totally take effect. Again, I still consider this to be just a story because I cannot find any actual data about it. The only thing I can find is COVID propaganda... and a whole lot of morons who believe it without actually knowing. That's the part that kills me. Without proof, this type of propaganda will make people dig their heels in and solve nothing.
You can bet it was his parent that made this happen. Kids have no sayt, one way or the other.
That poor child, I can't imagine the pain & discomfort. Why do parents make the decision to allow there children to suffer like this? No vaccine, Lose your child to the system.simple as that. If you don't want to care for them & love them properly another family will.
Does anyone know why only one boy took it? Did their parents sign them up to be tested? How would you choose between each boy?
Can you imagine being the boy on the left, getting photographed beside someone who doesn't have to suffer like you are, to demonstrate that your suffering was entirely preventable? How much anger would you feel toward the caregivers (presumably the parents) who willfully did this to you for their anti-vax crusade? It's heartbraking.
Yep all those that got the Covid jabs will be self corrected and it's mostly the slaves of social media and TV. Society is ridding itself of the the feable minded.
It's so cute how you're so busy spouting the same pre-packaged bilge over and over again that you can't see how well you're disseminating your illiteracy. Hasn't your mommy ever told you about spell check, pumpkin?
Load More Replies...He actually has small pox as well, you can see the few pox marks. But because he was vaccinated, he didn't get anywhere as sick.

Don't blame them. Although I thought surgeons changed hands a few times in long surgeries. Not saying they still wouldn't be exhausted if that was the case. The concentration and precision would take up a lot of mental energy, let alone the physical energy used from standing and fiddly work etc.
"As moderators, we do our best to keep the overall quality of posts as high as possible. Thankfully, our community is very active in reporting content that violates our (or general Reddit) rules. One of the most popular violations is self-harm posts or gore posts with no case description. Of course, there are many inappropriate comments we have to remove from the comment section as well, but I think it is common in every Reddit community," they explained.
It's worth mentioning that MEDizzy is a project that expands well beyond Reddit. For example, there's a MEDizzy mobile app (that works both on Android and Apple devices) where medical students and healthcare professionals share useful medical resources and the MEDizzy Journal where they provide up-to-date articles from the medicine world.
Second Degree Skin Burn Before And After "Spray-On Skin" Treatment
Got this off Reddit: Doctors carried out a "revolutionary" new treatment where they made a solution from Zed's own skin cells and sprayed it over his burns. And just four months after the life-changing treatment Zed's burns have completely disappeared - leaving him scar free. Spray-on skin is a patented skin culturing treatment for burns victims, developed by scientist Marie Stoner and plastic surgeon Dr Fiona Wood of Perth, Western Australia. Wood's treatment is under ongoing development. Where previous techniques of skin culturing required 21 days to produce enough cells to cover major burns, Wood has reduced the period to five days. Through research, she found that scarring is greatly reduced if replacement skin could be provided within 10 days. Dr Wood's reported goal is "scarless woundless healing".

The spray on skin for burn victims is amazing. I hope this continues to develop.
I've seen a lot of things in my career because of one particular hospital I worked at. But this? Much of it fascinating. Some of it cruelty of disease or accident. Medicine/surgery has come and continues to advance at such a rapid rate. Hopefully a cure for some of these diseases will come soon. But one of them would probably be considered an "orphan" disease. Not many people have it so unfortunately not many scientists are working on it. Not enough money to fund the research because there's no profit in it. Common science! Companies and especially rich.people! Fund the research because it's the compassionate thing to do.
Yes, for my diseases there is not a cure yet, not many people who have it, let alone both diseases (though not like one in a million type) and there is no funding anymore for medical studies to try and find new cures. My last medical study ended in 2011, my last change to give a slight bit of a pain relief was 2016. I want more research for cures! I don't want to live with these extremely painful diseases for the rest of my life. They have caused and made beautiful things happen, which I am extremely grateful for! But it being called a suic*de disease, being the highest on a medical pain scale (only one of the two diseases, the other one is extremely painful too), I want to get rid of my pain. I don't care about other obstacles my diseases/disabilities bring, I just want to be pain-free or just have a manageable amount of pain. I want FUNDING! Well the medical world keeps evolving, so let's hope in the upcoming years, something will be found anyway!
