Surprised By How Little Americans Know About Alaska, This Artist Creates A Compilation Of The Coolest Facts About This State

Interview With Artist
ADVERTISEMENT

Born and raised Alaskan, the artist who goes by the nickname Ristay has noticed a strange trend. People (including Americans) know very little about her home state. So, as a true native, she decided to make an educational post about it. In it, Ristay presented maps, trivia, her own comics, and everything boiled into an awesome guide to one of the most unique places in the world.

And it paid off. Her post instantly went viral on Imgur, proving people really do need — and appreciate! — a comprehensive introduction to The Last Frontier.

You can follow Ristay on Facebook and webtoons

“I know most world maps used are inaccurate in size, the poles and upper hemispheres are all stretched and enlarged,” Ristay told Bored Panda. “Because of this, most people know Alaska is not how it’s depicted as being twice the size of the United States (Canada, Russia, Greenland all extremely enlarged as well).”

The artist also pointed out the other map offered in classrooms which has just the United States with Hawaii and Alaska off to the lower left side, in boxes. “People have honestly thought we were an island because they are so used to seeing that map.” To get a better understanding of the world’s proportions, Ristay suggests visiting TheTrueSize.com. “Honestly, it’s the most killer site and will blow your mind at the true sizes of locations.”

“I’m not sure why, beyond geography, Alaska is not talked about,” Ristay said. She has even heard some tourists asking if Alaskans use ‘American money’ and other weird questions like, “Are they actually citizens?”, “Can they vote?” and so on.

“Then there are some who can’t believe this is true and think these stories are exaggerated. But if you ask an Alaskan for any WTF tourist stories like this, we all have a handful,” Ristay added.

Ristay describes the response she has received online as ,”Holy sh*t, I did not know about this”. There were, however, a few commenters who still tried to debate the size of Alaska as being wrong in her depictions, and only when she made them use that mapping site did they fully get her point.

I grew up in Alaska, Anchorage area, and I absolutely Loved living there,.......with one exception. I am convinced that there are more mosquitoes living in, and around, the Arctic Circle, than anywhere else, hands down. They're everywhere, and they will devour you if you aren't prepared for them. After my troop's 2nd annual Mt. McKinley trip, I had so many allergic reactions to the hundreds of bites that I had to be admitted to the hospital. What a terrible experience. https://www.athropolis.com/arctic-facts/fact-mosquito.htm

My parents and my kids lived on Kodiak Island (Alaska's Emerald Isle) while I was in college. As I was sitting down to my midterms one year, I missed a call from my Mom. The prof was running late so I stepped outside to check the VM because she never called me that early (it was 10am where I was and 4am in Kodiak). The message was short, and consisted of "Hey honey! Just wanted you to know that they think the volcano in Anchorage might erupt soon, or just shoot out ash. Anyway, we might be evacuating, we might not. We'll call you when we're safe! Love you!" I called her back immediately... no answer. Cue me panicking for two hours straight and apparently turning in a short answer and essay question midterm that had a lot to do with volcanoes and not much to do with the History of Funeral Service.... luckily, my family was ok, reached them 4 hours later, and my professor allowed me to retake the midterm.

I don't understand the "perfect to rip your tampon out at" remark, and I don't want to. Had to confirm the "artist" is male because there's no way a woman would say such a stupid thing. There's no "ripping" about it, asshat. And no woman I know would dream of "ripping" it out in a freakin' LAKE. Disgusting. Go ahead and hide this comment.

My Dad used to be frequently called up to Ketchikan to work on diesel engines for local businesses and for machinery when he worked for NC Engine Power. He also worked on the engines of the fish processing boats and fishing boasts at Dutch Harbor. When he said "Yep..in between repairs, I'd hang out at the bars with the guys that worked the fishing and crab boats." Turns out he knew Sig Hanson and his crew. I said "I'd like to go up and hang out with them." He said "You're not going anywhere near those bars...those are some tough bastards in those bars. Too many fist fights." Ahhh....ok...Imma stay in Seattle.

was raised in TX,,,, they pointed out repeatedly that AK is the largest state... To boost you ego further, why not subdivide AK into two equal states? Then TX will be the third largest state? Also it will give two more Republican senators to the left-leaning senate... how about it? Write your state legislators...
