How many times have you felt your back hurt after a long plane ride? Or have you ever planned to have a nice quality nap while flying but couldn’t fall asleep because those plane seats are so damn uncomfortable? I know I have. Many times.

Luckily, there’s a US-based startup called Zephyr Aerospace, aiming to make plane rides more enjoyable for every single economy class traveler. Basically, Zephyr is a new airplane seat that allows passengers lie down while flying.

    How cool is that?

“Most airline seats haven’t changed since the 1970’s. 99% of all Economy Class seats are fixed upright and impossible to sleep in. They force unnatural postures over long periods of time and can damage health,” Zephyr Aerospace states on their website.

“Airlines try to justify higher fares by bundling perks like in-flight meals, lounge access and extra baggage allowance. In a study we conducted, 70% of travelers would trade these perks for the sole ability to lie-flat and sleep,” says the Zephyr Aerospace team.

Apparently, Zephyr offers Economy Class travelers the comfort and privacy of an individual cabin. “Our design allows passengers the gift of multi-functional usage—to lie completely flat, lounge or sit upright with their legs fully extended,” says the team.

I have to admit, this looks really comfortable…

    It also allows social distancing

“Airlines will be able to choose from upgrades like memory foam seats, black-out curtains, OLED displays, and other optional amenities,” claims the company.

Yep! The airlines will find any way they can to squeeze more money out of their passengers. "What, you want to use the stairs to get to the 2nd level? That will be $25!" Plus an extra fee to get 2nd level beverage service. The guy with the laptop is not using a tray table, probably because that's extra, too.

Those take up about 2 to 3 times more space than one regular economy seats. So they will be priced the same as 2 or 3 of today's regular economy seats.

I think that is the point of them being double decker. So instead of being two seats side-by-side, it is two seats on top of each other.

aside from this could only work on double decker airplanes, of which youhave the front half of the 747 and the whole A380, which the double height makes it less fuel efficient, which is why long distance planes like the 787 are going single deck now. This is a marketing ploy and not realitic at all. Second of all, if you have a double decker plane, with the extra costs to run it, there is no way you can charge economy for such seats, you would have to charge double, or go with two decks of standard seating.

This is the 2020 equivalent of "let them eat cake." If there's enough room to lie down, there's enough room for 1 or 2 more people, and that's the whole concept of economy seating. Just deal with a few hours of discomfort and enjoy the destination because this is a pipe dream.

This is only for skinny people, if you're plus size this is not for you. And the seat is not really comfortable for laying down. And how much does it cost though. I would rather buy business class, more space and comfortable than this tiny squeeze space.

This is all a little naive to me! Firstly, how big is the plane that you can stack seating. I dont know who uses planes big enough. What I dont understand is that there are few journeys over 14 hours so why do you need to lie down and sleep. There's a couple of jet engines propelling you at a couple of hundred miles an hour to your left and right, if that was a hotel you'd complain and leave. Two seat seems to take the space of 4 traditional seats, you'd be charge 4 times the price. Finally, the seat above would have feet at head level below and also very unsafe. Somebody could fall or slip coming down the ladder and injure themselves or the person below. Not everybody is physically able. Gimme a plane seat with an oxygen mask that allows me to not breathe the same air as everybody else and I'll be flying with that airline.

Looks like it uses up a lot more space than a simple, horizontal bed would. The key is to have them at a diagonal angle to the aisle so you don't have to climb over someone to get to your seat. About 2' wide would fit almost everyone and a larger size for larger people available at a higher cost. In a typical plane you could have 3 levels with the bottom right on the floor. They would have their own air supply and be soundproof for complete social distancing with urination facilities for men (and maybe women) to minimize aisle traffic. Being soundproof would allow people to actually sleep well on a plane. Imagine that! Imagine landing and if you didn't have to disembark you could just keep on sleeping. It could be pitch black inside. Watch movies with earbuds/headphones for total immersion. Low volume speakers could also be available. The same principle could be used for trains and long distance buses. It would have to be well padded for safety with seatbelts though.

two thoughts. the first is, no airline would install these as displayed. Don't get me wrong. they might love the double-decker idea. but there's absolutely no way they won't realize they can have more seats side by side. Secondly.... being on the top row means climbing up and down, being on the bottom means having to listen to that 5 yo with ants in his pants stomp about.

This would cost more money for the airlines to fit the planes out like this and they wouldn't be able to increase passenger numbers. Therefore it WON'T happen. They WILL have First Class passenger areas where the seat goes back a bit further and even some luxury planes where there are fold flat seats, but that's already in place and they are already charging exorbitant prices for that. Why would they bother? People fly because they have to, not for the pleasure of it, they'll fly in uncomfortable seats no matter what..

All I'm seeing is that they have taken a space for three spaces and turned it into one space. That's even less efficient than first class. And somehow they will have to double the height of the plane body as well. I have actually come up with a couple of designs myself that WOULD allow better seating options with a split half level design. But nobody is going to refit all those planes for economy prices.

It could be comfortable, but not economy: extra cost, extra weight, less passengers, more fuel and emission for one passenger. Inside in Europe, maximal flying time ca. 3 hours, the average 45-120 minutes, depending on destination. Only the on-board magazines for 200 passengers close the same weight, like plus 1 passenger! And what about aisle or middle rows??? Up to 700 kilometres (450 miles) for 3-4 people, best a big car. Fuel cost and toll the same price, like a fly ticket for one person! Further can be the same travelling time! From home to airport, at least 1,5-2 hours earlier, flying time, delay, cancelled, strike, bad weather, bomb alarm, slow security control, baggage size and weight etc., transfer from airport to hotel with traffic jam again. Best regards: a journalist, who travelled all around in Europe 8-15 trip/year and sometimes overseas.

This is until they finish working out stasis pods where they can put you in what looks like a sealed sun bed, freeze you for the flight and release you at the other end and means they will only need 1 cabin crew member to check for faults and 2 pilots to fly the plane

The reason airliner seat design hasn't changed is due to safety. A disturbing number of people used to die in relatively minor incidents because of seat failures. The design from the 1970s is so safe that bodies are typically still in the seats after bad accidents, as opposed to piled up in a stew against the bulkhead.

This is will never be approved by the authorities. And where the heck are the seatbelts. I would say the current design is better, but it could be improved. Like space it out, and don't charge for the extra leg space. If this design ever gets approved, it's just a disaster waiting to happen

Economy class? Count the number of seats in economy class in any plane now and compare it to the number of seats this project would allow in a plane. I doubt this project would even make half the seats. It would be impossible to match current ticket prices.

For lack of a better pun, this would never fly. These seats look nice, but greatly reduce the capacity of the plane. There is nowhere near that much headspace in any aircraft. Even the double decker planes have a much thicker floor for the upperdeck. For every space one of these takes up, they could fit 3-4 standard seats.. There's not an airline that would go for this AND still charge economy prices.. No way.

Looks a concept in the square space of 2 seats width, which I guess by now isn’t that diffused. Being a concept, it seems just by the mockup a bit too high for existing cabins. Fascinating idea but just a concept, unfeasible by what it looks. Even if cramped in current cabins dimensions, it would decrease a 6 seats capacity to 2.

This is just like one of those gorgeous, 4K video presentations of apartments/flats that walk you through an idyllic Shangri-La that has been professionally staged and decorated, then when you get to the real rental unit, it is a s**t-hole of peeling paint, cockroaches, broken fixtures and appliances, bodily functions where they don’t belong, smelly garbage everywhere and extra fees that the landlord “forgot” to tell you about before you signed. Disney couldn’t spin a better fantasy that that! I’m afraid that even if this were really good, the airline industry would find a way to ruin it for everybody.

Hate this concept. Unrealistic pricing, limits number of handicap and elderly on a single plane, limited number of planes that can do this, if they serve food and drinks, no easy access to second level for attendants, worse crash test rating, fall risk of turbulence plus a ladder, and I'm sure it'll be heavier, i.e. more just fuel being burned off.

And double decker aircraft are few and far between, costing vastly more to operate. aside from this could only work on double decker airplanes, of which youhave the front half of the 747 and the whole A380, which the double height makes it less fuel efficient, which is why long distance planes like the 787 are going single deck now. This is a marketing ploy and not realitic at all. Second of all, if you have a double decker plane, with the extra costs to run it, there is no way you can charge economy for such seats, you would have to charge double, or go with two decks of standard seating.

Floors and ceilings in double deckers sre structural. Can’t be lowered. This is far from something that will ever see the light.
