Travelers who use Airbnb hate its cleaning fees. You know, those annoying expenses attached to a property that supposedly cover the costs of tidying up the place for the next visitor.

In fact, they got so bad that in November, Airbnb said it was planning to make some big changes and make customer bills more transparent that should, in return, incentivize hosts to reduce or forgo them altogether.

To show you that this decision was long overdue, we at Bored Panda decided to compile some of the most absurd Airbnb cleaning fees people have noticed. Having said that, I guess it's better late than never, eh?

Continue scrolling to check them out and don't miss the conversation we had about the platform with travelers and authors of the blog Finding the Universe, Laurence and Jessica Norah; you'll find it spread in between the pictures.

That's the reason why I now only use Hotels in USA. I loved airbnb a few years back in the USA but now it's almost double the price as a hotel.

I go diving a lot in Florida, so I always look for airbnb first. The cleaning fees are ridiculous. In West Palm Beach, I found a place with a $1000 cleaning fee. Most have fees that are double the nightly fee. Hotels definitely come out to be a better deal now. Especially ones that provide breakfast.

Good grief. You could stay at a 5 star hotel with room service for that price. And you can leave without being charged a cleaning fee.

$416 cleaning fee for a two night stay is absolutely ridiculous. If the place gets trashed, then charge accordingly, but these hyperinflated fees are ridiculous. The guest could hire a professional cleaning service to come in and clean for cheaper than $416.

The cleaning fees are a way to hide the real cost that you want to charge. The unit is listed on the site by the nightly rate, no fees are included. I think they are in the process of or have changed this, but that's what causes this.

That's one of my biggest issues. Many places it's really hard to buy or rent a house because they've been bought up by corporations or investors to be used as AirBnBs.

Story time: My partner rented out her port st Lucie home as an airbnb while abroad. 'family of 4' rented it for a long weekend to visit relatives. nothing unusual with that though we preferred the longer rentals for less hassle for everyone. all paid up - can’t remember the numbers exactly but it was about $100 a night, cleaning was $150 because that's what the cleaner charges us who does all the laundry as well. $500 refundable damage deposit and tax (that you have no say over). So, after manager had left on the Friday, (we find out later from neighbours) 4 cars turn up with at least 12 (probably 16) people in - 3 big dogs (we had a fenced in yard) and a few children. they proceed to have a full-on house party over the weekend and run on the Monday before checkout (manager would usually walk-through house with guest).

EVERY room was ruined, soda over every floor, food and sauce rubbed up the walls, every bit of linen/towels used, they had a f******g barbecue IN the garage, sofa torn and stained, dog waste left everywhere, cigarette holes in one mattress (non-smoking house), one bed frame collapsed. Sink broken, TV broken PlayStation controller and game stolen. That is why Airbnb hosts charge so much, you can’t subsequently charge more because some a******e has trashed your place, reporting them does nothing to recoup your losses and the offender just opens a new account and repeats the process. It been ruined for everyone.

Airbnb hosts appear to have no guidelines, restrictions or common sense and Airbnb doesn’t appear to educate the hosts. My experience with Airbnb Animals and Spiders, if this happened in a Hotel and you charged it to your Visa and you took pictures you have chargeback rights. Hotels have health rules and Airbnb does not.

I have an Airbnb and agree that hosts need to cover their costs with the basic fee. But, there are things we don't control. The Service fee and Occupancy taxes are charged by Airbnb. Supposedly, they are sending the tax money collected to our local offices, but I went to mine and they said they have never received anything from Airbnb for any of the listings in my town. Then, Airbnb also takes a fee from what we charge, so they are charging both the guest and the host. The reason so many people jack up their cleaning fees is that Airbnb does not take a percentage of that. So, they keep their "price" low and then make up with it in the cleaning fees. I've struggled with pricing and am charging around $80/night per room. (I have three bedrooms listed). https://www.airbnb.com/users/show/246636446 It takes me at least 5 hours of cleaning for each guest. I wash everything, vacuum, dust, scrub the bathroom and have a dining room and living room that need to stay clean, too.

If I were to hire someone to do the cleaning and paid them $15/hour, it would be $75 for just one guest. My income would go completely to cleaning fees. I have a bad back and sometimes it's awful to keep this up. Hiring someone for long term stays makes sense, but most people come through for one or two nights. Covid continues to affect costs, too. I had a couple stay for a week over Thanksgiving. They went to a dinner and both were infected and got sick even though they were vaccinated. I didn't catch it but I closed the rooms for five days to prevent anyone else getting sick. The virus can live on some surfaces for 3 or 4 days. Then, there are the other costs of running a business. We had three months of 100 degree weather here. My a/c bill was $500/month. There is upkeep on the house, yard work, etc. It all adds up and is not easy. But, I have had wonderful guests and am enjoying this experience a great deal. They have all seemed happy here, too.

Airbnb cleaning fees are a one-time charge pocketed by hosts to cover things like doing laundry or scrubbing toilets between stays. They're separate from the base price and are in addition to service fees or charges for optional add-ons.

A NerdWallet analysis of 1,000 U.S. Airbnb reservations with check-in dates in 2022 or 2023 found that the median cleaning fee per listing for a one-night stay was $75.

The analysis also discovered that cleaning fees amounted to about 25% of the total price paid. In fact, in almost 40% of listings, they were from 20% to 29.9% of the actual price. On a few listings, cleaning fees were even higher than the nightly rate.

"We've generally had a positive experience with our stays. We have had a couple of negative experiences—one where the apartment had many issues like no heating or hot water, and one where the apartment no longer existed. In both cases Airbnb support was quite helpful," the couple recalled.

Honestly, the best thing to happen for the housing market would be a complete collapse of Airbnb and all those investors that bought homes they don't use to use as Airbnb rentals. Also looking at you apartment owners that rent out apartments for airbnb. Airbnb has been a massive contributor to the global housing crisis causing expensive homes and way too high rents

Still, sometimes you might just prefer a hotel. "It's a lot easier for shorter trips," Laurence and Jessica Norah said. "We normally use Airbnb for stays of 3 nights or more as otherwise, the hassle of coordinating check-in and check-out times can be tricky."

Kind of scary as you don't know what constitutes being "outside of the house" during a 12-hour period. There's a big difference between throwing a hot tub party at 2 a.m. and quietly walking to or from your own vehicle and getting reported to the owner by a voyeuristic neighbor. Either they and the host are in on this for financial gain, or the host has very hostile neighbors that do not appreciate them using their home as an Airbnb and they should not be hosting at all!

What’s the problem here? If the price is for 8 guests, what’s wrong with extra fee for extra guests? Nothing is hidden..

Airbnb Pricing. Not Only Do They Add "Cleaning Fee" And "Service Fee" To The Nightly Rate, But The Nightly Rate Is Raised For "Extra Guests." I Selected 8 Guests For A House That Says 10 Guests. What Could Be A Reasonable $500 Stay Ends Up Doubled Due To Extra Fees

Tourism fee? Wtf at that and the "occupancy fee" I've been seeing on every other post. Gee, if I book an Air BnB, I wonder if I'm going to want to use the damn thing?!

In the EU the listed price legally has to be all inclusive, and it is on Airbnb. What you see is what you’ll pay, no hidden costs. The price breakdown might be crazy but here you’d see a 1141 price, leave it or take it.

If you don't want to use towels washed on Quick Wash, Tina, it looks like you're going to be doing laundry at the beginning and end of your vacation.

Sure, no problem...that'll be $50 per machine started. Gratuity not included.

Now I'm annoyed about the "guest fee". Then I see a "tourism fee" in here somewhere.
