Over the years, we at Bored Panda have released quite a few pieces on subpar design. And while these publications are incredibly fun to prepare and scroll through (just take a look at this one), we need to balance them out a little. After all, not every designer is an incompetent 3-year-old. Some of them are 4... light-years ahead of the competition.

There's a subreddit that features high-quality images of interesting designs, including architectural, graphic, industrial, furniture, and product design, and even though we already covered it once, there are so many gems on it, we need to do a follow-up. From a restaurant half-sunken into the sea to a suitcase that can measure its own weight, continue scrolling and check out the best that human ingenuity has to offer.

We, regular users, usually see just the finished product. But there's so much more that goes into actually creating them. To learn more about design, we contacted Nicole Phillips, who has been working in the design industry since 2005 and has a background in fine arts and advertising. Phillips specializes in logo design, branding, and package design for food & beverage, beauty, health, and interior design clients, and for each project, her work is unique and never linear.

"The design process requires research, experimentation, and even a bit of psychology," Phillips told Bored Panda. "When I feel frustrated with the process, I remind myself to take a step back, have fun and play. It's those moments of play and experimentation that usually create the best results, but it's those hours of research that help build the foundation for the final result."

"My clients are not paying me for my time, they are paying me for my many years of experience, so if I am able to complete the design process in 5 hours rather than 5 weeks, this is a sign of my years of experience and knowledge, this is valuable," she added.

Trying to determine whether or not a particular design is good, many turn to Dieter Rams and his '10 commandments.' According to Rams, good design is innovative, makes a product useful, is aesthetic, makes a product understandable, is unobtrusive, is honest, is long-lasting, is thorough down to the last detail, is environmentally friendly, and involves as little design as possible.

Nicole Phillips agrees with the German design legend.

"Good design includes a good balance of function, form, and fun," Phillips said. "The user shouldn't have to try too hard to get what they need from the design. Good design isn't just aesthetics, it should communicate well and push boundaries a bit. Good design solves problems."

To paraphrase Don Draper from Mad Men, it's simple but significant.

This is a great idea - and Kelvinator (I think) did something similar in the 1950s. The problem is that it takes up a HUGE amount of space in the kitchen. The doors need so much space that it's not very practical.

It's where I buy my linen - towels, sheets, pillowcases, and duvet cover. Sure, a lot of junk is sold but there's also really good barely used 100% cotton linens with sizes marked on them. When I go to a thrift store, I usually check them out and if there's a really good piece or set, I'll buy them.

My wife used to put the sheets on UPSIDE DOWN, as in the part that you sleep next to vs. the part against the mattress and the part against the blankets. (In the case of printed sheets, this was rather odd, to say the least.) I haven't let her change the sheets in 17 years. Rather do it myself.

The "Orient" is usually described as the area near China. The use of "orientate" makes sure that people see this as a directional change rather than a region of Asia. It's apparently hotly debated which word is "correct" in this usage, whereas both actually are.

In America, you have probably never noticed this, but the label of the bed sheet is ALWAYS sewn into the seam located at the bottom right of the sheet. So, when making the bed, find the label and hold that corner in your right hand - your sheets will always be correct on the bed. Don't believe me ... Check it out for yourself!

I do that with a sharpie marker when I buy sheets. Just write 'top/bottom' on the narrow side so I don't put it on sideways. Saves much stress. I do the same on doonas so that when they're being put into the covers I'm not trying to put the long edge of the doona into the short side of the cover.

I always buy solid color sheets with a woven-in stripe so I don't have to worry about it. And I know the secret of folding fitted sheets too, bwahaha

I love this concept. Its a beautiful addition that does not mar the building's classic lines and architecture. Unless you are right on it, the building looks the same as it did 1000 years ago.

I got mixed feelings. The idea is cool, no doubt about it. But it's a bit distracting as well. Depends on the type of roads where it's placed i guess. On a higway, it could cause accidents because of drivers looking at it.

and to get access, you need a time slot, schedule weeks in advance, etc. I live in NYC and havent been able to get access yet. Hopefully soon I will though. BTW this used to be a place where there was a pier for cruiseships, and they replaced it with it. Worth it.

As a letter carrier this mailbox has everything I like. There is an overhang to protect the k**b from being frozen shut. It has the number very visible on the side, where you can see it from quite a distance away. And it looks like a decent size where I could fit an 8.5 by 11 inch envelope without bending it.
