I Design Ads Of Major Companies That Show The Harsh Reality (Warning: Upsetting Content)
My name is Igor Dobrowolski and I’m a Polish artist. Recently, I designed my own version of the real advertisement. Corporations like Nestlé and Unilever profit wildly from single-use plastic packaging while peddling the myth of recycling as a solution. But anyone who has thought seriously about the issue can see that recycling could never handle the amount of plastic surrounding our everyday life.

Also, don’t forget that plastic is itself created from fossil fuels and lobbied for by the fossil fuel industry, while they desperately try to maintain the single-use plastic status quo instead of tackling the problem at the source. Only by stopping the production of single-use plastics can this crisis be addressed.

Kate Lin is a senior campaigner at Greenpeace East Asia, based in Hong Kong. She says that the measure of human demands on Earth’s natural resources is known as our ecological footprint. Currently, we use the equivalent of 1.5 Earths to produce all the renewable resources we use. As the human population grows, the challenge of reducing our footprint becomes more urgent.
Pepsi
Years of scientific investigation have given us a clear understanding of what’s causing climate change and how humans are contributing. It works like this:
Certain gases in the atmosphere — like carbon dioxide — create what’s called the greenhouse effect, trapping in heat and regulating the Earth’s temperature.
Burning fossil fuels releases more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, particularly carbon dioxide. While not the most potent greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide is by far the most emitted by human activities.
Nutella
More greenhouse gases in the atmosphere mean a more intense greenhouse effect, causing the Earth to keep getting warmer. There’s more carbon dioxide in our atmosphere now than there’s been in the past 150,000 years. We’re also learning more about the impacts of climate change, many of which have serious consequences for humans and wildlife.
Nestle
The devastating impacts of climate change are clear. Our world is warmer than ever before, and people and wildlife are already suffering the consequences. But that’s nothing compared to what we’re leaving future generations if these trends continue. It’s time to stop the destruction. It’s time for an energy revolution.
BP
Fossil fuels — coal, oil and, natural gas — are major contributors to climate change, accounting for the vast majority of greenhouse gas emissions.
They’re also one of the main culprits polluting our air, water, and soil. Coal-burning power plants, for example, produce millions of tons of toxic sludge every year, and we’re stilling reeling from the impacts of the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon spill that rocked the Gulf of Mexico.

Exactly. Ppl think you can sustainably grow it, but where there is demand, there will be those operating outside limitations. So Nutella’s good stewardship is a farce. I live canola field adjacent. It’s a whole other prairie grass issue (aka a grass birds issue), but much more sustainable

I had no idea. Images like this are PAINFUL to see but also so critical so people can make changes to their behavior to eliminate their tiny portion of damages. We no longer buy any soda, we use a home fizz system. No nutella here and I limit as much as possible items with palm oil and when I shop I do not buy items with excessive packaging as I cannot easily recycle it where I live. We drive so little that our 10 and 18 yr old cars barely have 100k miles on them together. I am eager to transition to a battery powered car but we have to transport a person who uses a power wheelchair often so that conversion needs to be available.
I hate to say it, if you are using a 'SodaStream' home fizz system, they operate in Israeli-occupied territory in the West Bank. A location that is both hindering the peace process and allowing the company to profit off an occupied people. https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2014/01/why-these-people-want-you-to-boycott-sodastream/

Things like Pepsi and Nutella I stopped using. I stopped using Nutella because it contains palm oil and I stopped with Pepsi because of, well you can see. When I used to drink soft drinks like coke I would always cut the plastic rings so animals wouldn't get stuck
I live near the beach, every time I go I end up picking up someone elses garbage. There are trash and recycle cans every where. We have groups come to our schools every year to educate all grades on littering, recycling. Animals are brought in to educate them on why it is important to not litter. We have beach clean up days at school. We have been doing this for years. And yet people are still to lazy and selfish to do the right thing. If every day citizens will not do at least that much how can you expect big business to care. They are making big bucks and wont stop unless they are hit in the wallet. If people are'nt willing to do something as easy as using reuse drink containers and picking up their own c**p what makes us think they will sacrifice their beloved food choiced? Its depressing. And I am also sick and tired of coming up on used needles when I'm out and about.
Very very sad and unfortunate -_- I didn't know this.. thank you for opening my eyes to the reality o_o
That’s why it so important to recycle as much as possible. For example I try to do as much as I can to not purchase plastic items: i.e. plastic water by the case- I use a refillable water bottle everyday that’s BPA free. But there is some times you can’t avoid it. However I know I’ve reduced my plastic purchases at least 75% or more from 15-20 years ago.
Load More Replies...All of this is really really sad. And I want to help the Earth more by getting rid of plastic things and stuff like that.. but notice how none of these pictures have plastic straws in them? We need to get rid of plastic rings that soda cans come in, and plastic bags, and plastic water bottles, etc. And I know that getting rid of all of those is gonna be hard, but I think that right now, getting rid of plastic straws are really amazing and all, but getting rid of all those other things will actually make a difference in the world with saving our beloved animals. Wake up people! There are more animals than just sea turtles getting effected by this awful stuff. Galatians 4:16
And so for all the food you don't exactly know the origin and the ethic. So we should cut almost all of our food. And all of our stuff. I don't know you, but I can't control the origin of every thing I use or I eat. And also, I have not the competence to know what ingredients are preferable. So, why are you only complaining about Nutella?

All of them except Nutella can't really be controlled by the company, Coke and Pepsi can't control who throws their products into the ocean nor can Starbucks. Also with the oil spills that's usually like an explosion or something that is really dangerous so people could die you can't help it if there are technical issues
But Coke, Pepsi, and Starbucks can stop with the dangerous, polluting packaging. The plastic garbage vortex in the ocean is largely comprised of consumer product packaging, yet these corporations do little to clean-up the messes their products cause. Most oil spills have been caused by negligence, whether incompetent/intoxicated piloting of tanker ships, or favoring production volume over safety of the workers and the environment. If you reviewed the investigations into most petroleum-related environmental disasters, you're realize that pretty much all were completely avoidable had the corporations not been so greedy, and in many cases, there were plenty of close calls and other warnings that something bad was about to happen well in advance, supervisors just ignored the problems or worked around them rather than fixing the causes in a timely manner.
Load More Replies...PLEASE PEOPLE, if you have to throw away your plastic garbage, CUT ANYTHING that makes a loop or a ring! Just snip it. You're killing the planet!
It's not the products itself, it's the people who throw in the street/sea/forest.
People are down voting because they are too greedy and selfish to care about the earth. I am constantly shocked that people with kids will say "So who cares, I won't be around when it all falls apart" . Pure laziness, just try something different, don't use plastic like it's the only product out there. recycle, recycle recycle. If nothing else at least that gets it out of the dumps and puts it back to use. And it costs you nothing!!
Why all the downvoting? I'm so lost lol people saying 'this is sad and disturbing' are totally right!

I recycle everything I possibly can after reading the amount of "Trash " dumped in the ocean every year. The amount was mind boggling!!!
Well, although the companies use plastic packaging, it's the consumers who are mostly to blame. They throw away their s**t like it's nothing. It's like blaming a car producer for an car-accident that has taken place because the driver was on his phone and didn't pay attention. Yes, the car was made by the producer, but it's the costumer that is making a mess.
Everybody is to blame. If we want the world to get better, everyone has to work towards it. For example, it is clearly listed in the flyers handed out by my town that we cannot recycle styrofoam. That doesn't stop restaurants from packing your leftover food into styrofoam containers (what's worse, to waste food or use styrofoam?) or restaurants who package anything meat on styrofoam plates. I believe it's companies' job to make it a reasonable choice to live sustainably by using plastic containers that can be returned, rewashed and reused. What if for much of the food bought from the grocery store, had reusable packaging that you paid a deposit on, you get the deposit back when you return it to the grocery store, it returns on the now empty food trucks to the item's packaging center where it will be rewashed and refilled and sent back out again. That is a world I want to live in, where everybody works together for the greater good.
Load More Replies...I think the only company that would do anything about this would be Starbucks. The rest of them could care less.
Really so sad. Can you imagine how long that plastic must have been around that turtle for it to deform its shell that much, or the pain those birds must have experienced with it imbedded in its beak? I remember a number of years ago, when the war was wrging in the Sudan, a reporter for the New York Times, was there covering it for weeks/months at a time, but no matter who he wrote about, no one seemed to care. So, as a last ditch effort, he report an article titled, "Save the Dafur Puppy". The entire piece followed the life and struggle of a puppy surrounded by war. And sure enough, the paper was flooded with people wanting to know how they could help. While it's upsetting that people felt no impetus to help the millions of men, women, and children, at least they finally decided to do something. So maybe people don't care enough when they see fellow humans suffering because of climate change, but will care when they see animals. Regardless of what gets them to act, at least they do.
@Marianne, you make a great point. I wasn't aware of the Dafur puppy story. (Not sure why people were downvoting!)

No buying products that contain palm oil doesn't stop the production of palm oil. It's a vicious circle that doesn't have an easy solution, I hate how people assume that no buying something somehow means it's not still being produced... It's devestation what these products have done to our planet but we also need to cheer companies on when they are making a big difference. Small steps are still steps, as long as we're not going backwards.

We have been recycling as a family for about 10 years now. I see more and more people become more aware about the environmental crisis and try to help make things better like we have been. But without the big corporations just cutting the c**p and taking action and taking responsibility of their littering and causing colossal damage to the environment, we are just a dust in the solution. It's like trying to clean up a wasteyard, toothpick by toothpick, while there's a garbage full of new truck coming every second.
Actually the problem is not yes/no - plastic/no plastic. There are many options that we can use like more easily dissolving plastics or recycling much more of our waste. Can you guess why that's not done? Bcoz it will reduce the profit for the big companies and they don't want that.
