Debates across the U.S over President Trump’s border wall finally came to a head in December, resulting in the longest government shutdown in U.S history. And while the partisan issue has mostly swirled around ethical and economic issues, engineer and court-accepted ‘wall expert’, Amy Patrick has entered the ring with a different point – a structural one.

In a detailed Facebook post gone viral, Patrick laid out from an engineering perspective why the wall is “a disaster of numerous types waiting to happen.” No matter what side of the aisle you fall on, you can’t help but realize that if anyone knows what they are talking about on this issue she’s that person. Scroll down below to read each one of Patrick’s concerns from architectural to ecological, as well as people’s responses.

The shutdown isn't about the wall anymore. It's a dementing megalomaniac acting like a petty spoiled brat to get his way. His illusions of grandeur make him think that he's an omnipotent emperor, while in fact he's just being a revengefull dictator.

Hey! Do not bereave people who do not like complicated realities of simply solutions with no apparent side-effects! It is just not fair that we should not assume that a complex socio-economic problem is not solvable by a few tons of concrete! And please stop with all these ramifications, who cares for negative impact on our own lives if we can get a symbol of freedom and strength! A wall! Well..., uhm..., oh, nevermind.

How can the guy say that flooding is only possible in a SMALL AMOUT? Half the damn border is the Rio Grand RIVER. A RIVER!! THAT"s about half the size of the entire boarder! You ever try to build a wall IN A RIVER? You can't. which means you have to either invade mexico and steal their land, or encroach on US taxpayer land AND sacred Native American land. You want to kick Native Americans off their land again? You want to tell the us taxpayer your taking his land and giving some to mexico because you have to forfeit space for this wall? You're gonna tell that to the Texans that they have to give their property to mexico? Good luck with that when/if the construction crew shows up on their lawn in the open and carry state.

Don Spencer needs to spend some time in the south. He said "flash flood areas comprise a small percentage of the area being addressed"...ever been here after a hurricane? Drainage on the scale that we would need post hurricane would not happen if there was a wall in place. Trump’s Professor: ‘Dumbest Goddam Student’ I Ever Had, Reveals How He Got Into College. Trump has previously suggested that he had an MBA from Wharton’s prestigious graduate school, opting to tell people he went to the “famous” Wharton. But, that too, was a lie. They’re pretty much known for their business graduate degrees, and Trump played on that prestige when he spoke with people. In reality, Trump never attended any graduate studies there, and only transferred in during his junior year to enroll in their undergraduate program for two years. http://news.groopspeak.com/trumps-professor-dumbest-goddam-student-i-ever-had-reveals-how-he-got-into-college/

95% of drugs come through LEGAL ports of entry (DEA). Two thirds of undocumented immigrants came here legally (over-stayed visa's, there is already a wall at most populated areas, leaving the most hostile terrain open. 5 Billion for a wall will build about 215 miles, leaving over 1900 "open borders", illegal immigration from Canada increased 142% in 2018. The furor in the media over the wall is nothing more that a Trump ploy, and will bleed necessary fund from border security such as more surveillance, better technology, more Border Patrol agents and increased security at legal ports of entry, to say nothing about finding and deporting those undocumented immigrants who are already here. In early 2017 Trump was offered 25 billion in return for providing a path to citizenship for DACA to which he verbally agreed---what happened to that offer?

Look at the Great Wall of China. It was built to keep out Mongols and other unwanted people. That worked out well - it wasnt like Gengis Khan with friends stopped dead in front of the wall and said "darn, we has no other choise but go home empty handed ". Some historians says that - besides doing s**t in the long run - it did help to topple a whole country because of the costs (both to build, defend and maintain).

If everybody is focused on the wall and the government shutdown, or abortion, or "deep state", then business can go on as usual. Beware of make-up "important" pseudo-political topics that simply create a shield to hide the really important decisions that are made with no scrutiny or open discussions. When politicians plaster emotional response issues all over the place the safe guess is that they are using it to hide something that has to do with a lot of money and/or will have far-reaching consequences.

Since the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, more than 70 new walls have been built by countries such as Hungary, France, Spain, and Saudi Arabia, all of which built walls to specifically repel unwanted immigrants. During this same time frame, Israel, Ireland, Finland, and Turkey, among others, built their own walls for peace-keeping purposes or other reasons. So yes Virginia, there are still valid reasons for building walls, valid reasons which are supported by the people of those countries; and while some have dictators in charge,(Saudi Arabia and Turkey) the majority do not. And not a Nazi in sight; other than the uninformed one reflected in your mirror.

Trump is talking about the fact that the wall will ensure national safety. Does he realize that because of the shutdown there is nobody checking who's getting into the country via airports? And why am I even mentioning this, it's not as if Trump cares about that at all. He just wants his wall, if he's still in office during coming Christmas this year, I'll send him tons of lego, so he can built his wall himself.

She's good. I just wish more was said about animal migration and habitats being destroyed. All just collateral damage, as are Federal employees. However, the wall is a smoke screen for selling the US to Russia. All we need now is for a civil uprising of all those who threaten to do so when impOTUS is impeached and found guilty. The Russians will offer their military (again) to step in and "help."

Using the Great Wall of China as an example of how it can be done is funny. I am just assuming here that the people that built it probably didn't go home after an 8 hour shift, weekends off, overtime and fair pay? What about workers comp. Unions? Any one die and the builders close the site for a period of mourning? Anything old has a big chance of having been done off the hardship of the masses, the poor masses.

WHY did Trump chose a "wall"..Infrastructure replacement/repairs would have been a no brainer. Probably 90% of Americans would have approved of that.Given Trump's past of almost always seeking personal financial gain. Personal gain would be difficult when funds are going to 50 states. BUT one big project ($5+ Billion headed up by individual(s) choose by Trump. Now -- there is great possibility for personal financial gain

There are different types of walls/fences for each type of terrain. It is obvious that this engineer did not study the prototypes or any of the specifications. In order to have these walls constructed an engineer had to design and sign off on the designs. As a registered engineer, she needs to go back and review the plans and specifications for each scenario before commenting, as she appears extremely unprofessional as well as borderline malpractice.

The shutdown isn't about the wall anymore, it is about a group of demented socialist liberal democrats that do not care one bit about the security of our great country, they are more worried about ensuring an good influx of voters and undocumented people. They want the illegals to come to drive down the jobs market, they want to ensure their social and welfare programs are over used so they can push their socialist programs and agendas. They, at any cost, will do what ever they must do to defy the President. Seriously Trump could turn around and do exactly what they ask and want, which is has proposed with the DACA allowance, and like the dummycraps they are, they are rejecting it. Trump could announce a cure for Cancer and they would say it is a bad thing. When will people wake up, these two faced democrats are the real problem for this country.

You know that the Chinese did a similar project some thousand years ago, right? So it is certainly doable. As for the costs: You can't just simply think of construction only. A wall like that will also make border patrolling easier and more effective thus reducing its cost, it will hold back drug and human trafficking, it will bring hundreds of new jobs in poor areas which means better living conditions. There are positive aspects, not only negative ones.

The wall of china did not work--china was successfully invaded by the Manchus who replaced the Ming dynasty with the Qing dynasty. And according to the DEA and DHS a wall will not stop 99% of drug traffic, and about one third of human trafficking. For around $320 an immigrant can fly to Canada and enter the US WITHOUT a visa.

If she had actually done her "homework", she would have found out that the wall had been under construction for 50 years now, and the plans she is criticizing are from Obama's terms, not Trump's. She also would have found out that Obama and the Democrats built over 200 miles of the wall during Obama's 2 terms. I have had to bring engineers onto job sites numerous times to physically show them why they are wrong. A contractor who actually builds things knows far more than any engineer who has many degrees.

I'm pretty f*****g sure she did her homework. But you did not. Obama never, ever, ever had a plan to build a massive wall that would stretch across two countries and impede on private homeowner's land. What you're thinking of is some fencing. Obama never built 200 miles of a wall during Obama's terms. On top of that, democrats weren't even in f*****g power during his term. GOD.

Her first fallacy is thinking that contractors don't consult or even have in house engineers. Secondly, she says its too hard. Um the Great Wall of China??? Then she talked about flash flood drainage... when was the last time we had a flood anywhere near the border? Then she talks about a ladder to get to the top... how are you getting down safely? Then drones? You think in 10 years the technology for a drone to carry a human will be here but border patrol wont also have technology to destroy it or EMP it? C'mon. We get it, you are very smart and successful, but using your work experience to validate your emotions is not reasonable. The Chinese proved you wrong with a wall that is almost 3 times as long as the US Mexico border built 1700 years ago.

It is just not fair that we should not assume that a complex socio-economic problem is not solvable by a few tons of concrete!

I am just assuming here that the people that built it probably didn't go home after an 8 hour shift, weekends off, overtime and fair pay? What about workers comp. Unions? Cheap drone carrying a person. Why not funding a autonomous drone to patrol. Not that predator type drone. But an army like colony of wasp.

I think that trump should get Russia to pay for the wall and have Mexicans build it, they love building things.

Just about every govt project ends up costing more. As far as the flooding goes, it will be on the Mexico side so who gives a s**t?

You mean you hate being proven wrong, especially when it comes to politics, regardless of which platform is used.

GOD.

Then maybe we should start worrying about people with expired visas instead of this ode to racism.

Oh for f***s sake go Google floods along the Mexican border and see how floods occur there. Talk about being emotional. This women presents facts and you don't even bother to look them up.
