Actress-Turned-Filmmaker Angela Matemotja Debuts Feature Film ‘Elevate’ At Dtla Film Festival
With the DTLA Film Festival currently underway in Los Angeles, there’s a new filmmaker rising amongst the ranks: ANGELA MATEMOTJA.
Angela has been an actress for years, appearing in Tyler Perry’s “The Single Mom’s Club,” alongside Kevin Hart in “Something Like A Business,” and a slew of television shows including “How I Met Your Mother,” “Bosch,” “Castle,” “Don’t Trust The B…” and “The New Normal.” In recent years, she started getting her feet wet behind the scenes writing and directing award-winning short films, including “The Encounter” and “The Untimely Concurrence.”
Now on October 20th, Angela will be making her feature film debut with the World Premiere of “ELEVATE,” which tackles homophobia, food addiction and racism.
Not only did Angela write and direct the film, but she also stars as Trina, an overweight elevator switchboard operator who desperately tries to accomplish just one day of healthy eating. Overwhelmed by her abusive boss and by the trapped elevator occupants that reach out to her for help, her fitness guru provides the inspiration and escape that she craves – or does she? Ultimately, all of the occupants in this trapped world find themselves caught face-to-face with their inner demons.
Rounding out the starring cast are Brianna Brown (CW’S “Dynasty”), Kit Williamson (creator/star of award-winning and Emmy nominated LGBTQ series “Eastsiders”) and Alexis Carra (Latina star of ABC’s “Mixology”).
Angela and Brianna co-produce the socially conscious film along with Dele Ogundiran. The film has already earned an award of Merit for Best Feature Film and Best Actress in a Leading Role (Angela Matemotja) from the Accolade Global Film Competition.
“My mission has been to explore the social, sub cultural and international aspects of our nation, one story at a time,” Angela shares. “Our world is in crisis and I believe that art can heal and given the divisive temperature of our current society I do believe that this film is timely and needed.”
