Perth photographer Chris Saunders wins AIPP Australian Professional photographer of the year.
More than 400 of the country’s best professional photographers gathered in Melbourne Tuesday night for the Australian Institutes Professional Photography Awards – known as APPA – presented at a gala dinner at The Plaza Ballroom on Collins Street.
Perth photographer Chris Saunders won the prestigious title of Australian Professional Photographer of the year for his abstract landscape images.
Mr Saunders, an engineer for an oil and gas company spends his spare time photographing landscapes.
“What I really enjoy about aerial landscapes is it allows you to see things from new perspectives and explore new areas”, he said.
Mr Saunders said aerial images challenge the viewer to look at our landscape and see what is going on around us.
“Aerial photography allows us adults to see things like a child again; like looking up at the clouds and seeing shapes and stories”, he said.
Mr Saunders said it was a huge honour to win the prestigious AIPP titles.
“Australia has some of the best landscape aerial photographers on the planet so making it on the shortlist was hugely rewarding in itself”, he said.
“I’ve never really seen myself as being equal to some of the established AIPP photographers, so the recognition my work is at that standard is incredible”, he said.
