Abandoned Fishing Net Removal While Scuba Diving Is Hard Work!

Abandoned Fishing Net removal is hard work. Fishers who’s fishing nets are getting stuck in reefs will be cut off on the surface and will be abandoned due to it is cheaper to buy a new one then get the old ones up and off the reef. This job is left to us Volunteers because fishers don’t care. Since abandoned Nets are a killer for the reefs they need to be removed, they entangle into healthy corals and choke them to death. On top there is the danger that all sorts of marine-life can get post-entangled in these nets and killed. Removing abandoned nets from a reef is not as easy and straight forward as it sounds because you can’t just rip them off. You need to carefully cut them off the Corals otherwise you do more damage to reef and marine life. The best tool you can use are scissors. We rescue lots of fish, crabs, shells and obviously Corals.

We are the volunteers and Staff of Poseidon Dive Center Ao Nang and myself Daniel Sasse. My background is 25 years of professional scuba diving and rescuing reefs by educating students, removing abandoned Fishing nets, fish counts, coral propagation, coral monitoring, setting installing and maintaining permanent Anchor Buoys, debris dives and underwater cleanup dives.
