Nothing makes me happier than sharing smiles. I was running at the park a while ago, and was really struggling. A complete stranger coming the opposite direction grinned at me, said I was doing awesome and put a high five up in the air. That encouragement out of nowhere completely changed my day. I still think about and look for chances to pay that forward.
I found one as it happened, on another running track a few months later. I saw a girl up ahead, practicing what looked like aerial yoga dangling from one of the park trees. As I got closer I saw what she was doing was pretty amazing. I gave her a big grin and two thumbs up. Her smile back at me was radiant.
I’ve created quite a few characters over the years, but one of my favorites has always been Happi Paper, because he embodies this type of positivity and thoughtful kindness. He’s a giant walking toilet paper roll, and though he’s got the worst job in the world, he always finds a reason to smile. The comic below is the first in a series featuring him, with tips on how you too can spread sparks of joy in simple ways.
