The Unadulterated Cat by Terry Pratchett has a section that runs along similar lines. He also has a St Purrnard (or something like it*) that, to paraphrase, keeps avalanche victims alive through sheer rage of watching it curl up and sleep just out of their reach. The Unadulterated Cat is an excellent book, and was partly the inspiration for this post :) My copy is a bit tatty, but still just about in one piece :)
