The Life of Sharks is a webcomic that features real facts about sharks along with witty humor—created by Christian Talbot (the writer) and Sophie Hodge (the illustrator).

Mostly our animal comics are about the minutiae of everyday life, relationships, and emotions. We thought it would be funny to put those things into the mouths of fish that are perceived to be cold-hearted killers. Also, sharks can’t claim royalties. The more I learn about Sharks, the weirder, and more appealing, we find them. A lot of marine biologists follow our funny comics now, and they appreciate the niche jokes about plankton.

Our creative ideas come from all over the place. It could be a phrase I hear or a news story or something that’s happened to me that she can thinly veil as happening to a funny animal. Sophie will often send me a random situation for me to write a cartoon about. I get my best ideas while I’m vacuuming the house or when Sophie texts me to say she’s run out of stuff to draw and to please try and be funny. I use Wikipedia to confirm (or deny) the things I THINK I know about sharks.

It all started with me writing little dialogues between these talking animals on my Facebook page as a way to do sketches. I wanted to show that I could write something like that as well as the stand-up routines I’d generally do. They were quite popular with some of my comedian friends, and they encouraged me to have them done as webcomics. I can’t draw, so I was delighted when I found out that not only could Sophie draw them, but she also was able to add her unique style to the whole thing. They’re funnier because of the way she draws them.

You can find our hilarious comics on the respective social media links down below. Also, we’ve recently published a collection of our comics in a book consisting of our very best Shark comics. Check it out sometime! And for now—enjoy the toons.

That's fear in a nutshell, you fear something that is not going to happen to you, and you don't fear something else until you are attacked by it.

Ah, the majestic tentacle shark. I'm glad that this comic strip is bringing attention to this amazing species.

Fun fact: These are probably females. The males might also be there... attached to the female as a pair of gonads. In the deep sea, meeting a mate is difficult, so angler fish make the most of it. The tiny male attaches itself to the huge females, dissolves the skin where they contact, and they basically become one organism. Nature's weird.

Great reference to Norm MacDonald's moth story as told to Conan O'Brien.

Sharks aren't as dangerous as people make them out to be. They mostly just ignore people.
