Twitter User Recaps 2021, Reminds Us Just How Crazy This Year Was

It’s impossible to remember everything that happens to you in a year. Even less so to the entire world. That’s why a comedian and internet personality who goes by the nickname Llama In a Tux decided to catalog 2021.

Now that December is drawing to a close, their meticulously compiled archive serves as a memory freshener, showing just how vibrant the past 300 plus days have been.

But before I invite you to scroll down, keep in mind that there’s a twist to Llama In a Tux’s history ‘article.’ It paints a very different picture than news channels, magazines, or even meme pages. As the comedian highlights, their 2021 recap revolves solely around Twitter.

However, it’s the main reason why it’s so unique, too — a calendar that reflects social media is one that reflects people. So here is everything that we’ve been talking about since January.

It’s impossible to remember everything that happens in a year, so here’s a recap

We managed to get in touch with Llama In a Tux and they were kind enough to have a little chat with us.

“2020 was a pretty wild year, and when it finished I wished I had had some way to look back on the events that took place on Twitter,” they told Bored Panda.

“Oftentimes my family and friends in real life don’t know what I’m talking about when I mention ‘large boulder the size of small boulder’ or whatever — something that had a huge impact on Twitter. So when 2021 began, I decided to start keeping track of stuff that dominated the feed and when. I thought it would be fun, and it turned out 2021 was nearly as exciting as 2020 had been.”

While the media might think that the most significant events in 2021 were COVID’s continued toll, the U.S. withdrawing its military from Afghanistan, and Meghan and Harry sitting down with Oprah, internet users might’ve found more entertainment elsewhere.

“The biggest event on Twitter in my opinion was the boat in the Suez Canal,” Llama In a Tux said. “Honestly, anyone who uses a social media app of any kind was pretty aware of what was happening and the corresponding jokes. Close runner-ups would be bean dad, cinnamon toast shrimp, and Bernie’s mitts.”

As for 2022, whatever happens, Llama In a Tux just hopes that Twitter is there to make light of it again, just like it did this year.

“The world can be a dark and scary place. Having millions of others joining in with you to make fun of it all can provide some much-needed levity.”

Yes, 2021 started with the attack on the Capitol and is ending with the surge of yet another coronavirus variant, so our expectations aren’t very high but it wasn’t all bad — nearly nine billion vaccine doses have been administered worldwide, and almost 200 countries signed an agreement pledging to take action on climate change.

And even though the changes are slow, corporate America is becoming more diverse (nearly 50 percent of all new members of S&P 500 companies’ boards were from historically underrepresented groups, up from 22 percent the year before).

“The qualification to make the list sort of changed as the year went on,” Llama In A Tux highlighted. “In January, I was looking for Twitter-specific stuff that became memes. So, the Capitol riots, for example, didn’t make the list. But as the year went on I started to just include anything that people were talking a lot about. So you’ll notice October and November have more stuff. There were also lots of things that didn’t make the cut because they were difficult to nail down to a single day. Some tweet formats last weeks and it’s hard to say when exactly they took over.”

Also, keep your eyes open: Llama In A Tux is definitely doing it again. “Check back on Boxing Day 2022 for my recap of the year!” they added.

Oh dear. I am only familiar with about 16 of these on the list. For many of the list entries, I have absolutely no idea what they're talking about and feel like I have been under a rock.

Very entertaining way to see what is considered important through social media. I guess people dying left and right from the pandemic and natural disasters does not count 🙃

Well, that would take reading the news—-from a variety of news sources, including foreign, to get different perspectives in order to sort out what’s true—-to stay informed about events that are way more important than what the Kardashians are up to. Social media is not a credible source for that kind of information.

My parents went on a hike through a remote area for their first date when they barely knew each other. Fortunately, it went great and they've been married 41 years, but my mom has commented that it wasn't the wisest, safest idea to go with a stranger who could have, say, murdered her in the woods. It depends. Take precautions like make sure someone knows you're going to call them to check in at a certain time, etc and it could still be an awesome first date.

Doesn't even cover January 6th, the most shocking thing I've witnessed in the US in my 53 years.

This makes me rather relieved I didn't continue trying to get my Twitter reinstated after some tool in the comments reported me for simply telling a simp troll to stop trolling a pro sports player for an "interview" because he thought he was a "reporter" (he wasn't).
