Flower blooms have been a very popular subject since the birth of photography. Their wide variety of colors and shapes captivate humans and feed our imaginations. Some of them are quite odd and seem like they could be from a different planet. From my collection of flower photos, I’ve picked out fifteen of the strangest flowers I’ve encountered. Enjoy!
“The Queen of the Night” – this cactus flower opens at night, so if you don’t get an early morning shot, you might miss out!
“Blue Eyes” – These fluffy flowers have a blue (or purple) center that peeks out at you!
“Hummingbird Yucca” – The bloom of this succulent native to Chihuahua, Mexico, attracts the tiny birds to your garden.
“The Passion Flower” – You’ve probably heard of or even eaten passionfruit. The fruit pods are oval shaped and look like an old, wrinkled man. The flower is what you’d expect an artist to draw imagining flowers from other planets!
“Purple Passion Flower” – this variety of the strange fruit that gives you Passion, is possibly the strangest of the group.
“Peruvian Apple” or something else? This bloom startled me! Out of the corner of your eye, I’m sure you can imagine seeing a serpent ready to strike! But, it’s only a cactus flower that will become an edible fruit!
“Waimea Hibiscus” – Did you know that Hibiscus plants are in the same family as okra? If you don’t know what okra is, you’re definitely not from the US Southern States! This white and red Hibiscus is from Kuaui and is one of only two species that have a fragrance.
“Princess Flower” – Also called the Purple Glory Flower, these purple wonders are even stranger when you see their hairy leaves!
“A Mexican Hat” – This oddity is also called the upright prairie coneflower. It’s native to an area that spans from Canada to Northern Mexico.
“Summer Beauty” – The many varieties of Eucalyptus have blooms that ignite the imagination.
“White Magnolia Flower” – These elegant flowers have been the subject of paintings, photos, books and movies. They never cease to amaze human curiosity.
“Purple Crown Flower” – This Agapanthus with a royal name bears the color of royalty.
“Pride of Madeira” – The cone-shaped bloom of Pride of Madeira can reach heights of almost 6 feet. Something to be proud of!
“Purple Coneflower” – An echinacae from the sunflower family, the purple Coneflower has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries.
“Yellow Mystery” – Despite multiple photos put through Google Lens, this is the only flower I’ve not been able to identify. Any botanists out there?
