What would you be willing to do if you wanted to work for a great company?
Well, I don’t know what you would do, but I will tell you what I did. It all started on a Monday morning when I found out that a pretty cool company was looking for a UX designer. I read the announcement and then I searched more about them on the Internet and I thought to myself: Well, Alex, how would you differentiate yourself from the other candidates and why should they take you and not any other applicant?
And so I sat on my blue couch thinking about that when I suddenly got the easel in my sight. My wheels started turning and turning until it hit me. I’m gonna make a painting as my résumé.
I didn’t know what to start with so I thought I should start with what I know best, Photoshop. I didn’t know how it would look like so I just let my hand run freely on the graphic tablet guided by my instinct. After a few minutes, my résumé started taking shape. I finished it and then I thought how would I put it on canvas. After a couple of minutes I knew. I would print it on sticker paper and cut a shape.
At the printing place they told me they could only mark the shape with the laser and that the cutting would we manually done, however they didn’t have the time to do the cutting. So I asked them to do the shape with the laser and I did the cutting myself. Yes, it was a truly painstaking work, but I knew it was worth it.
After I cut all the letter out, I put the canvas on the easel and I stuck the sticker paper there. I painted the background and the letters with the help of those tiny shapes, however there was something missing. I left my hand run freely again, this time on canvas and as I started painting I realized what I wanted to transmit. That for me, designing is my universe, is what makes me wake up in the morning with a big smile on my face knowing that I will have the opportunity to express my creativity in yet another way.
Maybe you are wondering what is the link between an User-Experience designer and a painting. Well, I just wanted to see if I could create a nice and memorable experience, to transmit my message in a different and creative way, yet easy to understand and use, just as I do through my design.
So this is it. This is me. I’m Alex Trofim and I’m a graphic designer for about 5 years now. I enjoy creative briefs and I am always up for a challenge in the design area.
