It's gorgeous but as Randy Mertl pointed out it's mostly metal with wood panels. And the only thing bothering me here are the silver chains of the swing, they're throwing me off from the whole vibe. Still a masterpiece
Think about how often we’re surrounded by wooden objects—tables, doors, staircases, to name just a few. We use them every day without considering the effort behind them. Something as common as a chair can take around 20 hours to make—and even longer if it’s particularly intricate or elaborate.
Knowing this, it’s fascinating to learn about what attracts people to this meticulous craft. That’s why Bored Panda got in touch with Liam O’Connor, a talented 24-year-old woodworker and furniture maker from the San Francisco Bay Area, to hear about his story.
Liam’s passion for creating things started early. “When I was a little kid I used to love sewing my own stuffed animals, but really I would try to make anything,” he tells us. As an adult, he’s kept that same spirit alive, making everything from dolls to pet houses, which he shares on Instagram and Reddit.
Me either ....they would demand I get to work right away
Load More Replies...Are we looking at the same thing? Some blocks glued or otherwise placed on the wall? Edit: OMG, I SEE IT!
Load More Replies...How was he to figure that out? Took me a couple of seconds to see what it was.
What perceptive skill That takes..a mix of imagination and science....
The seemingly random blocks of wood make a silhouette when a light is shone on them from an angle.
Load More Replies...Liam’s creativity as a child was nurtured by his supportive parents and his grandfather, who helped him with different projects in the work shed every time Liam came to visit. Later in high school, Liam became deeply involved in ceramics, but his focus shifted when he went to college and gained access to a full woodshop. Since then, he has developed a penchant for crafting quirky and unusual wooden creations.
And they have the door thing on both sides, so both of them can decide to close the shop when they feel like it.
This is really excellent. This world would be in better shape if we all just talked to our neighbors.
Absolutely stunning! Would LOVE to have this for myself❤️ amazing work, JOB WELL DONE!!
One of Liam’s latest projects, for example, is a testament to his imaginative approach: a creature-looking wooden den for a pet with carved round teeth and tongue-shaped pillow that rolls out of its mouth. One of the users on Reddit even compared it to The Luggage, a fictional object from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld fantasy book series.
Throughout the years, Liam has crafted a variety of charming items, including cute wooden doll figures, lamps, tables, and cooking utensils. Almost all of them are designed with elements that give them a lively, almost animated personality. For example, one of the lamps has little legs. The figures range from gnomes to forest spirits. The cooking spatulas are shaped like fish. Looking back, Liam notes that personification has always been a consistent theme in his work, even from his early days sewing stuffed animals.
You'll really have to reach in down below, about 5 centimeters in there is a little button.
Load More Replies...Oh. LOL. Stop telling me I'm commenting 2 fast and to slow down darn it. These are cool.
Liam draws inspiration from both the people in his life and the natural world. “I always have creative people around me, like my brother, that help me expand my skills and ideas while encouraging me to try new art forms,” he shares. Growing up in a redwood forest left a lasting impression on the young woodworker. “Seeing all the different animals and plants really stuck with me,” he says. “Lots of my work reflects that.”
Not good for a house. Heat energy transfers lengthwise through wood three times faster than it does crosswise.
But why would you use so muhc cement instead of getting the wood closer together? What's the advantage of doing it like this?
It looks like they leave space in the cement on the inside so it's probably for insulation.
Load More Replies...I thought it was rocks until I scrolled down to the next pic , very nice looking house.
Looks like it would withstand a hurricane or tornado. And beautiful too!
🤩 Think I’d figure out how to redo the front of my house and have it as a front facade/front door!
For those interested in trying woodworking, Liam’s advice is simple: just get started. “Your stuff is probably going to be pretty bad at first, but that’s fine. I still make crappy things all the time,” he candidly admits. And although patience is key in any skill, it’s especially important in woodworking. “When I was younger, I would rush the process a lot, and I would end up making mistakes that just slowed me down even more.”
That's what I was thinking. Looks like it could be a Tumbleweed House.
Load More Replies...If you’re intimidated by tools, Liam suggests starting with some basic ones, such as a jobsite table saw or circular saw, a drill, jigsaw, and a sander, which are relatively affordable yet versatile enough for various projects. He also recommends looking for a makerspace in your area—they offer a great environment for learning and creating.
I would pick a fight with my husband for the reason that I could sleep on this
Is there a reason why you wouldn't run the cable across the grooves in the 'feet' rather than drilling holes & running the cable as shown?
if this were at my house, the answer would be "my cat bites and pulls cords"
Load More Replies...That is really cool idk if they already have things like this that lock together like that but you should talk to a company that would sell this type of thing and sell em . Patent it that's a really awesome thing and it's wood not plastic so def greener than plastic and more sturdy less likely to break
Feels like AI, and I don't know how long resin would last in a heavy traffic area.
"Spot the AI" is the modern Turing test, I really can't say if this is a really good AI pic or a real pic with an uncanny lighting.
Load More Replies...AI, the natural bark edge on the last step next to the resin shouldn't be straight.
Woodworking involves hands-on practice, but there are many online resources to help you improve and expand your skills. YouTube is always a good place to explore. “My favorite [channels] are Foureyes Furniture and ShaunBoydMadeThis,” Liam says. He also finds the r/woodworking subreddit helpful, where he’s encountered friendly and knowledgeable people, contrary to the stereotype that the users of this platform might be snarky and rude.
Looks like a house made out of shipping containers. The deck is nice I guess.
I live in a shipping container home. It’s 6 containers and a dogpatch design. Building in rural Hawaii on a volcano fault zone leaves little affordable option and insurance is difficult given the propensity for lava flows. Our cost from foundation to finish would have been seven times pricier had we gone with a more conventional build.
Beautiful, home, beautiful view, just BEAUTIFUL ❤️❤️❤️ would live to live there lol
I wish the figures holding up the mirror were standing on something. I feel the need to add a few books so they aren't just floating.
They're like those goats that can cling to the side of cliffs.
Load More Replies...And it seems woodworking is experiencing a resurgence in the US. In the digital era, many find it rewarding and stress-relieving to do something using their hands—it’s a grounding and meditative process. Alison Jones, for instance, who works at an architectural and engineering firm, describes a time she joined a tray-making workshop. “I came in here with a headache,” she says, but working in the shop calms her. “I like learning how to be competent at something,” she adds. “At the end of it—look, I have this thing,” she says, holding up her tray, “instead of a spreadsheet.”
It's brilliantly done, I'm just not sure if I like it. Great craftsmanship though.
You have to put a lot of salt (I mean 30-40kgs) inside and keep a lid on it when not in use. That way you can keep the water for months, you will only need to drain it like 2-3 times per year, depends how often you use it and how clean you can keep it.
Load More Replies...It's hard to tell exactly what wood is used, but the Japanese have been using hinoki wood in their wooden baths for centuries. Cedar can also be used. Both are rot resistant and resistant to bacteria and algae growth. So depending on the wood, it might take less care and chemicals than you would think.
You can by these, I've actually been looking into them. They have different sizes and some have a bar wrapped around it.
So, if you’re looking for a new hobby, perhaps this is a sign to try your hand at woodworking. Remember, it takes time to reach the level of craftsmanship seen in these featured projects, but creating something small can still give you a sense of accomplishment. Above all, enjoy the process!
I'd rather keep a field of wild flowers there and sit where my bare feet touch the grass and bugs and birds and frogs have their space too.
The size of the garden, you can have both, and go forth and reclaim the lawn for nature!
Load More Replies...Really really pretty but too manicured to be real. There needs to be a lot more dirt and leaves on that patio
That is indeed stunning however I look at that and think of the maintenance required...I've had a wooden deck... Sun dries it out, warps it, has to constantly be kept stained or sealed... I know I just ruined it...sorry
Oooo, slippery when wet is my first thought, and obviously for party people as none of it is really positioned to just enjoy the view, plus how much notice would you need to cover or bring in cushions etc if weather turned bad, probably break a leg, slipping on the decking, if it was real.....of course, Much prefer a meadow, pond, bushes and trees where faerie folk can dance. Alicorns, Unicorns, Griffins and bunnies fly and run about while I talk to all my animal friends... Hey if AI can be used, then I can show off my head world paradise OK! ❤️
Agreed. Looks like a couple of well sanded and painted pallets and some cubes and shelves from IKEA. Love it.
Load More Replies...Me too, I wanted it for our dining table, husband said no and so did kids. I just love the texture and feel of it all.
Load More Replies...Considering the damage I'm capable of doing myself on smooth edges, I'd have to say no, beautiful as it is
My brother would love this! Though he’d probably love it more if we could fit a trampoline into the house.
Replace his bedroom floor with a trampoline
Load More Replies...my guess is that it's not and that you can't really enter it unless the supports are out
Load More Replies...I agree with the stairs and if this were mine, I would have liked to see some desk side storage built into that wardrobe too as it does seem way too deep to be used to its full potential as is.
Load More Replies...Why would this be any more 'unsafe' than a regular cycle? It's the PPE that adds the safety.
Load More Replies...The swinging and the rattling would be maddening.
Load More Replies...Great craftsmanship, but I'd be too scared to use them, especially in the dark.
AI, look at how the jacket hangs through the chair, and the location of the light switch, along with the faucet on the back wall with no sink
Give it a few years and it will in someone else's house painted teal...(sad face emoji)
Ohh, for a second I didn’t realise it was a top down image until I spotted the little girl near the bottom. Interesting perspective!
I didn't realise at all, thanks for saying something!
Load More Replies...I thought it was steps, and said to myself, "Self, what are those snail-like things?"
It's top down, there are people walking down the stairs
Load More Replies...Nice except it gives the impression of being rather small in size. Is it just perspective or was it built for child sized people?
I was thinking doll house... yeah it looks small.
Load More Replies...lol I'm a dipshit - i thought the mirror was a phone and was so confused.
I would love a grown up version of this. But then I also want a minstrel gallery in my garden and I don't know any minstrels
You could build a small one and put the chocolates in instead?
Load More Replies...Wait so... the printer is always close to your knees? It doesn't look like the wall is far away enough to completely "hide" the printer. That's an accident waiting to happen
Good to see they’ve put the printer at the right level in case it screws up.
That's brilliant....if you chop up a brand new pallet. Like to see what can be done with a heavily used 'retired' one.
after all those mudslide picks BP had recently I find myself wondering how it will hold up.
I love the shelving (visually, at least), not the stairs. Unfortunately I don't drink, and I need to maximize shelf space for books that are decidedly not triangular.
oh come on, in what universe does this look real enough to pass off as an actual woodworker "outdoing" themselves. ffs.
The light reminds me ofvthe Pixar light. Yes, I know it is not same shape.
*sigh* more AI - the text on the books is mostly just shapes, weird playing card
I don't think it's AI. That's a legit Edith Head book and old playing cards from the 1800s didn't have numbers on them...just the symbols.
Load More Replies...Wow! These people are amazingly talented! More like this, please, Bored Panda!
how about we get pictures of actual woodworkers with actual talent instead of soulless s****y ai renders?
You can be so creative with wood, it's a fantastic material and always looks good.
On the vote: ALL OF THE ABOVE!! I want practical tools and functional furniture with amazing aesthetics and sometimes quirky pieces
22 is shipping containers, not wood. 24 is just a deck and 27 you can buy cause I'm looking into buying one.
