When faced with injustice, you generally have three ways how you can react. You can ignore it, keep your head down, and get on with your day without making any waves. You can try to be sneaky and make subtle 5D chess moves to outplay the situation to your own advantage. Or you can call the injustice out and shine a light on it for everyone to see, bold as brass, sometimes using humor to do it. That way, it’s harder to hide the injustice.

This list is about the times that women and men called out sexism and misogyny, as shared on the r/TrollXChromosomes subreddit. People from all walks of life, from everyday employees and parents to skilled professionals, confronted sexism on social media head-on to help everyone. Upvote the responses by these brave people that you agree with and let us know what you think in the comment section below.

The r/TrollXChromosomes will be celebrating its 10th birthday on the last day of March. "We're currently in the middle of intensive planning for the 10th Cakeday celebrations. It'll be so much better than our 5th Cakeday shindig, folks will cry. But we can't tell you more than that, lest our plans are foiled," the moderators told Bored Panda when we reached out to them.

They’re also steadily moving toward the 1 million member mark. Currently, they’re at just over 802k, so consider joining them and giving them a boost. They post about a variety of topics. In their words, they’re a subreddit for “rage comics and other memes with a girly slant.”

However, this doesn’t change the fact that the subreddit is also home to some serious posts that show how deeply sexism is enrooted in our society. Even to this very day. And while sexism can be subtle and covert, it can also be very overt. One example of this is women getting harassed on the streets. So while it’s one thing to confront sexism online, it’s a whole other ball game when it’s done in real life.

I’ve Never Heard This Explained So Succinctly (Credit Fu**k_patriarchy On Instagram)

datingafeminist Report

Bored Panda spoke about how women should respond if they’re ever in a situation where they’re either being catcalled or openly harassed on the street with Emily May, the co-founder and the executive director of ‘Hollaback!’ The organization aims to end harassment in all of its forms.

May explained that women should always trust their instincts. “Listen to what your gut is telling you. There is no ‘right’ or ‘perfect’ response to harassment; however, studies show that having some kind of response (either in the moment or later) can reduce the trauma associated with harassment. If you decide to respond, do it for you.”

She said that it’s always all right to do nothing, smile, and keep walking. It’s always up to you to decide what’s right for you and if you want to confront your harassers. It’s always harder to do this in-person than behind the safety of your screen.

For those saying "not all men," that also proves the point. It was never the clothes. Still, people continue to blame women for dressing "provocatively."

Exactly. It’s like saying “not all men are rapists”. Yeah. But there are still a hell of a lot of rapists, so what’s your point?

well some men are also f*****g sick in their head, i have had guys do all sort of stuff towards me that would be considered assault, but because "we are friends, being drunk and having fun" its all good right?, these are people i dont see anymore, but the way they treated me, told me exactly how they would treat women, and probably even worse for the women. also some deranged men see women as objects rather then actual human beings. i hate that a woman has to be on her toes constantly just because men are f*****g disgusting. i have had several female friends sleep at my place while too drunk, could never imagine betraying that kinda trust, i am just happy that my female friends were trusting enough in me to see my place as a safe place, i truely wish all guys would act like that, but i guess thats just wishful thinking.

If you really want to see this in action, go to a strip club where there are horny men and horny lesbians. The men are all pigs about it and the women aren't. Sure both groups get rowdy. The both will tip the dancer and buy her drinks and the expectation is always that the dancer will owe them sex in some form. The difference is when she says no to the women, they accept it and there are no issues unlike the men who will stalk the dancer, prey upon her simply because they believe it's their privilege as men. I have seen this over and over and over again. It's sickening what men think their privilege is because they have dangly bits.

I think they compaired lesbians to men not because men are the only gender who rape but because both lesbians and straight men are attracted to ladys but i can see why it could have been taken the wrong wa i had to re-read it a cupple times cuz at first i was like wa- then i was like oooooooooooo also i'm 12 no offence it shouldn't be that hard for grown people to figrue it out if i can and also stop down voting people for speaking their minds also women can wear what they want just as men can but yes it does put them at a higher risk of being sexuliy harrased. before poeple start down voting me hear me out i am a sexual assault surviver so yes being in that sistuation made it hard for me to trust straight men but not all men are the same don't be so judgey and get to know someone not their gender you'll find not everyone is the same.

To all those men on here saying women dressing provocatively should expect unwanted attention - if a man is wearing expensive clothing, does that mean he should expect to be mugged? Is "he asking for it" When his wallet is stolen and he's beaten by those who covet his gold? Just curious.

I would like to say that in my experience this is not true. I worked as a club DJ back in the 90's and did a few nights at a gay club. When straight men came in they would get hit on and say they were straight and that was the end of it. If a straight women came in no matter how many times they said they were straight they would be hounded. I night one of my friends had to be escorted out by the bouncers because they would not give her 5 minutes rest and she kept getting touched.

The problem is the physiology: Physical arousal triggers the reproduction instinct for men while women can be physically aroused without that in mind. No defend for A-holes that think that's an excuse

So how come for lots of men this "reproduction instinct" doesn't involve assaulting or harassing women on the street? It's nothing to do with instinct and everything to do with the total lack of respect some men feel towards women.

As a straight man, I have never understood why men feel the need to make certain comments, blatantly stare, and just act rude and perverted. As a person with a functional brain, I've never understood why some women will wear an outfit that intentionally shows off 99% of their body, then act disgusted by any form of attention. I mean, you can't be wearing an outfit like that because it's comfortable can you?

Ren Karlej

Because you are right with the first part of your comment. A person should be able to be naked and free from risk of harm, free from nasty comments. The problem is not the lack of clothing but the reactions to it. Naked or clothed, people should be safe. It isn't like that but should be. Not that I want a world full of naked people and yes some people do dress provocatively deliberately. Doesn't make being provoked okay. If they got no reaction they would see little need.

Yes, true but men hormones are significantly stronger and different than women (even if you are a gay woman). Women are stronger in that aspect. But men (not all) can be weak either way but reveling clothes are like a confirmation or a way to make bad temptations worse. If you dress really revealing, knowing that it will lead a man to think or even act wrongly. It is partially your fault, if you are putting yourself out there very inappropriately yes it's wrong. Men, have those urges for one or two reasons. Because we as a human race are ment to reproduce. And dressing very revealing way can be a make a guys think or act strange becouse its nature... well sorta. It can also be becauseif Sin. Women can feel that way too. It's wrong both ways. But yes 100%. Men need to control thier mind, thoughts, body and soul. Men can think wrongly even if women are dressed very modest but that doesn't give you the excuse to make it worse. Some are extra crazy becouse of a mental illness and/or Sin. It perverts the mind and takes mother nature to the extremes and twists what was once good into selfishness. Pray for those guys

Two things. First, saying "But some lesbians..." is the rhetorical equivalent of saying, "Not all men..." in this context. Second, yes, women and men can both behave horribly like this. They're among the people who have internalized misogyny, and normalized objectifying behavior towards women. That's still the patriarchy.

Writing "some guys" instead of "guys" would be a good choice. I know she probably did not mean "all men" but just "some individuals among men", but this lack of nuance could make this generally valid opinion seem like a vicious generalization about men as a whole, which would make them less prone to listen and more prone to defend themselves stubbornly.

Not all men harass women. But all women are told to cover themselves so no man gets "distracted" . In this case the topic does involve all men.

djinnjeannie

In what way is this homophobic? It compares men to lesbians in one sense only, that they are both sexually attracted to women. Men come off badly of course in this comparison for the very reasons he point is made. There is nothing homophobic at all.

As May put it in an interview with Bored Panda, your safety is the main priority. However, if you feel safe and choose to respond to your harassers, there are three main approaches that you can take: setting boundaries, engaging bystanders, and documenting the situation. Let’s go into detail about each approach.

“Set the Boundary. Tell the person harassing you exactly what you want them to do and why. Look them in the eye and denounce their behavior with a strong, clear voice. Many people prefer to name the behavior. For example, you can say, ‘Do not [what they’re doing], that’s harassment.’ You can also simply say ‘that is not okay’ or ‘don’t speak to me like that.’ Say what feels natural to you,” May from ‘Hollaback!’ explained.

“The important thing is that you aren’t apologetic in your response, and that you don’t engage with them after you set the boundary. Oftentimes, people who harass may try to argue with you or dismiss you through further conversation or by making fun of you. As tempting as it may be to get into a verbal war with them, we don’t recommend it. The attention may further feed their abusive behavior and cause the situation to escalate. Once you’ve said your piece, keep it moving.”

The second approach is engaging bystanders by telling them what’s going on and what they can do to help you. “Not all bystanders have been trained to respond, but typically people do understand that street harassment is not okay and they want to help you, so what can you do to ask for that help? You will need to loudly announce to people around you what the harasser just said or did and identify them, like: ‘That man in the red shirt is following me. I need help!’” May explained.

The third and final approach is documenting the situation. If you feel that you’re safe and not currently in danger, you can consider taking a picture or a video of your experience. Or you can ask a bystander to do so.

“This could include the person harassing you, their license plate, or the scene. Some people use photos or videos to report an incident—for example, if the person was at work when this happened people may choose to report it to their employer.”

It often has the potential to be hugely transformative. If it feels right to you then do it. It doesn’t work that way for everyone so ask yourself, ‘Does it feel right for me?’ or ‘Is there another way to respond?’”

One thing that you can do is to develop a ‘quick ritual’ to help you ‘shake off’ what happened every time that you get harassed. Having a friend that you contact when this occurs can also help. Sharing your story with the people you trust can be very powerful and healing. What’s more, affirming to yourself that you deserve better and that you won’t let ‘the haters’ get you down is another response.

“The idea here is that you want you to develop resilience so that you can get out there and keep being you in the world,” May told Bored Panda.
