The American Dream has slowly but surely turned into the American Nightmare; the notion that anybody, regardless of wealth, race or social class, can make it to the top has become thoroughly discredited.

Wealthy parents bribing and cheating to ensure their kids into elite schools is nothing new; the upper classes have long since rigged the system in their favor to ensure that the door remains closed to all but their own, often mediocre offspring. But while the concept of the 1% looking after themselves is well known, it’s not often that a concrete, infuriatingly obvious example of the process actually occurring is made public.

The college admissions scandal has finally shone a light onto this shadowy world of influence and coercion, and it might just open up a whole can of worms. This case involved “Fifty people, including Hollywood stars, top CEOs, college coaches and test administrators, who allegedly took part in the scheme to cheat on tests and admit students to leading institutions as athletes, regardless of their abilities.”

The scandal has rocked the academic world in the U.S, raising questions about whether “qualified students were denied entry to accommodate children of the rich and famous.” Actresses Lauri Loughlin and Felicity Huffman have been implicated in the scheme, although it’s unclear whether their children were aware of it at the time. One of Loughlin’s daughters, influential Vlogger and social media star Olivia Jade, will not be returning to one of the Universities heavily involved in the scam, the University Of Southern California.

If this kind of bribery and blatant cheating happens in schools it begs the question: where else is corruption occurring? Who knows what dirty secrets are hiding in the worlds of politics, high finance and the weapons industry, for example?

Writer Jaimie Leigh has done us all a service recently, by penning an eye-opening piece that further exposes the festering injustice that runs deep through American society. The post, which has already been shared over 30k times, details her experience working for wealthy clients, writing papers and doctoring resumes to ensure that lazy, entitled rich kids get the right ‘personal brand’ for Ivy league universities. Because once you have the right credentials, parentage and connections, your actual talents and work ethic cease to matter. You’ve made it and you can tell everybody that you are ‘self-made,’ while bright and hard-working people from less privileged backgrounds find the doors locked shut.

With 2020 elections on the horizon, these are exactly the kind of conversations that America needs to be having, rather than the endless distractions over the personalities of individual politicians. The problem goes far beyond any individual, it is systematic and needs to be rooted out if the American Dream is ever going to remotely achievable.

This is why a very select few companies I've worked for will do working interviews and really put the new hire to the test. Kinda sad how many kids can't do what they should be able to. When administering the tests myself I can't count the number of frustrated people yell that it's unfair to expect the bare minimum of them straight out of school. It kills them to learn that I went to a community college for my degree, and that I am the one who decides who gets hired. "It all comes out in the wash." Go ahead and cheat your way through life if you must, but don't think for one second that I care what school you attended. I only care that you can do the job I am paying you to do,and most people these days either can't or won't

Our politicians have made it perfectly obvious that they lack common sense and a basic education, and people were surprised that college representatives were helping the rich kids cheat to get into college? Puh-leez! What really makes me angry is the number of students that worked their asses off to earn a place at those colleges only to be denied because some rich kid had to cheat their way in.

Oh..and people that think you can buy your way into this upper crust of rich people..don't kid yourself. To find out what I'm talking about..read up on a woman known as "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." She was a poor woman who became a rich divorcee after her husband became successful in the mining industry. She was never fully accepted into the upper crust because she came from new money and was very outspoken on issues surrounding women and juveniles.

Yep, old Bushie Jr is one of the more famous average, C- students and a perfect example of the nepotism and advantage family name and lots of money can give. SMH...and to think there is some genius student from poverty or working class parents that worked their a*s off with a 4.8 GPA and 1580 SAT score that *didn't* get into Yale....

And here I am rewearing clothing because I can’t afford to wash them at the laundromat. I doubt I’d be able to get into college. Yeah, scholarships exist, but there’s always someone with parents that can pay more. I think I’ll become a hermit and live with a few cats in a tree house, growing vegetables and hunting deer in the forests. Every so often, I’ll hunt down someone who did this with their kids and throw cats at them. Murder via cats.

Reilly, I know I don't know you, but please, please try. Anyone who is determined and creative enough to execute murder via throwing cats belongs in college (if that's what you want.) I got in and made it through even though my parents didn't have the money. Apply. Apply to 5-6 different places. If you can't afford the application fee, ask your school counselor or pick up the phone and call the admissions office and explain that you can't afford the fee. Some places will help out with that. And if you want any advice from me, reply to this message. I can give you my email.

This happens with Chinese students gaining entrance to American colleges too. Over 40% of international students in the US are Chinese and its because their parents pay services to write entrance essays, task entrance exams and do phone interviews because they believe that getting into ANY US college automatically gives their kid an edge. As a graduate I taught lower-level classes and I can tell you that nearly every freshmen Chinese student spoke EXTREMELY poor English and their written was not much better. I even had a fellow grad student who understood zero English and couldn't even fulfill the basic requirements and responsibilities required of her in the program so she had to be "demoted" of sorts. There is absolutely no way she wrote her own entrance essay and participated in her phone interview, the head of the program would have caught on. Colleges turn a blind eye because these students pay full international tuition. Its an epidemic they are happy to ignore.

The worst part of all of this? It is NOTHING NEW. It is not unusual nor is it something that a large segment of the population cares about. The wealthy have been buying their way through life since...well, probably since one cave person found a bigger and better stick than the other cave person. Take a glance at some of our (US here) politicians and decision makers. Many bought their degrees and many continue to buy their way through life. Wealth cares privileges the majority of us will never know.

Sometimes, colleges and universities pop out little dudes like Bill Gates, Michelle Obama, and Stephen Hawking, and sometimes, they unleash people like The Donald, Mark Zuckerberg, and that one kid who dressed as the school mascot so often he developed a furry fetish that he used as an excuse when he was caught with his d**k covered in peanut butter, and a hungry-looking dog sat in his bedroom. The sad part isn't that people doctor their resumes, and even their personalities, in order to make it big, the sad part is that they're allowed to do so, because the people who came before them are just as stupid, and consider it the right, and often only, way to do things. If the world was run by intelligence, instead of money, we'd have found the cures for cancer and AIDS years ago. Stupidity breeds stupidity, and we have to allow it, because of human rights.

With college tuition growing ever higher pretty soon the elite won't need to try so hard to keep the middle class or poor for rising to the top because only the wealthy will be able to afford college.

To be fair, college tuition has increased over 1,000% over the past 30 years not because schools expect only the elite to be able to pay (that's actually very stupid from a business standpoint and colleges are businesses), but it increased because the government started subsidizing tuition to all and everyone who wanted to attend. Giving out unlimited amounts of money to everyone who applied meant that the colleges could hike up the cost of tuition because they know the money is now there. You can blame big-daddy government for upsetting the college market system, not the elite.

All of this is 100% true! I have a friend who went to Harvard and another who graduated from MIT Sloan. Both are children of immigrants, both worked their way in. But the pressure out there to be part of the chosen few is relentless (unless you are chosen from birth!). My MIT friend left the finance field - it was all dominated by old white guys with long family histories connected to the field. Yes, she is white, but as an immigrant she's not white enough. And her merits never mattered - only working with the "right" people and getting along with them worked. I'm so happy that my field - arts and design - still does not rely on big names or money. As an artist, you are either good or bad, no names asked.

Art industry can be just as tricky sometimes. When I see galleries selling paintings from artists who earn thousands per picture and said to be genius but I barely see minimal effort (maybe half hour) gone into those paintings... while digital artists and designers work long hours, face impatient customers and deadlines for a not-so-high wage. Hurray.

Do not forget schools where teachers are only nice to kids donate LOTS of money to the school. For example, Bob donates tons of money to the school, but Kelly doesn't. Bob is going to get an A for an essay when he should have gotten a C+. It happens all the time, especially at my school.

I think she's afraid to name names. She refers to A*****e McGloatyFace as if it's a WASP plot. Ron Unz wrote an expose in 2012 about the massive over representation of a certain group in Ivy League schools and how that over representation doesn't match SAT scores. That story has gone nowhere, because it would expose the real problem facing the US today. Sure, money is important, but so are tribal connections.

In Ireland we don’t have essays to get into college, just points earned during anonymous exams (leaving certificate) and everyone applies for their course (list top 10 in order of desire) with the CAO and gets offered the highest one on the list that they have points for in the college it’s offered in. If you want medicine in UCD for 595 points and you get 600 points in your leaving cert then you get offered the course. If you want Arts in Trinity for 300 points and you get 600 points you still get offered Arts if it was your number 1 course choice. But this doesn’t mean that there isn’t nepotism in Ireland. Of course there is, and in some industries it’s guaranteed to be the case, but for most cases it does come down to personal drive and choice. That might also be why there are so few, relatively speaking, 1% people in Ireland. But the whole system is aimed at people who can do the exams and doesn’t work for people who’s intelligence shines in other ways, but that’s changing.

I am sorry to disappoint a lot of you people but I believe that Jaimie Leigh’s opinion about low-wealth rich people is fundamentally flawed. First of all, tutoring and counseling that prepare students better are a completely ethical option for students that afford it, as it indirectly ensures the success, without promising that the teen will automatically succeed. Courses are just a way to increase the chances of getting accepted into top universities but without some personal envolvement and the required aptitudes, not even the best of the best tutores can’t help. I am telling this as a foreign highschool student in Romania that has taken tutoring for the admition exam into highschol education. I worked very hard on my own and for my middle school classes and the tutoring was only meant to help me face my weak points and that wasn’t hurting anybody else, because I could have simply given a s***t about my parents efforts and not even been accepted by the same institution I was in.

Not to mention that tutoring is legal unlike bribe, which I totally disagree with(and that’s a good point of her exposé) and as long as it’s not directly putting others to disadvantage(although most people abroad take tutoring and counseling because they are not prepared for the different educational requirements in the US) it’s impossible to remove a habit that defines the modern world. Everybody is investing in education the way they can and if it seems like paying for tutors or writers to write your essay(which is, by the way, how MANY of the so-called illustruous foreigner students get their scholarships, including Romanians I know) is immoral, well then, why wouldn’t paying for books and school supplies be “unethical” as well, since that is how many American institutions and also European ones proceed.

This is exactly why we should place people in Jobs or Schools solely based off of Merit. We should remove people's names from job applications and applications to school insole Ebates all choices off meritocracy. That's the single best way to end the aristocracy. The requirements to get into schools should be public so that we all know the exact requirements for instance Harvard will select only the top 1000 applicants solely based off SAT scores. No one should be allowed to take these tests at a different time. If you cannot take the test with your schoo/classl you will have to wait till next year.

I think the saddest part is that the writer narrowly defines success or having "made it" as having millions of dollars and generally being considered rich. Rich is subjective. I have lived in poverty, but through my own merits, enjoy a career that is fast approaching 6 figures. I feel rich because I own my house, have a wonderful wife and child on the way. I want for nothing.

Sure, this isn't her best work, but why was this written like a 10th grader's Facebook status? Surely a person of her experience and background would know that the audience she was trying to reach were highly educated, self-made adults in the work force. We don't need ALL CAPS to pay special attention to certain points made. Yes, the rich elite will always get away with murder (sometimes literally), but it catches up. The dynasties you read about represent 0.1% of the top 1%-ers, while the rest are self-made millionaires who can't parent their kids properly, and the money is gone by the next generation or so. If it weren't for these A*****e McGloatyface's parents, our beloved author, Jamie Leigh, would not have the job she does now because she would have not been able to hone her craft and make good money to support her at the same time. Were it not for upper-middle class parents trying to give their kids a push in the right direction, I would have not been able to support my two kids.

I listened to a presenter speak about how important the "right" school was -- in other words, that "Brand-name university". He remarked how HR managers would weed-out resumes without looking at skillsets or relevant experiences. Years later, I met a woman who worked in HR. After a while, she shared that her boss asked her to go through a stack of resumes and to pull out only the ones from specific universities (of which, I could never dream of attending when I was applying years earlier). Her comment pretty much confirmed what the presenter had said. It's all about the college and connections made. Back in the day, fraternities and sororities were for building connections. I doubt that is true any more.

The parents suck. The fact that they realize their children are worthless pieces of s**t who will amount to very little so they must bribe their progeny's way into an elite university is appalling. They choose to cheat rather than teach their kids how to be better. I might catch hell for this but after seeing one of Olivia Jade's videos about her attitude towards school, I have concluded she is a s**t human being and every bit of that falls at the feet of her parents. If universities want to stop the rampant favoritism for the rich and powerful, there's a fairly simple solution. Set a reasonable standard for admission, and then use a lottery to select from all applicants who meet that standard. Coaching, practice tests, test academies and other tools of the wealthy won't help give anyone a boost above the rest.

Everyone always has an edge... either skill, money, talent, contacts... it's how you use this edge to get ahead of the pack. you don't need a university degree to become a millionaire... you just don't know how.... with the information era peaking... where can't you learn?

Great article ! Very honest and forthcoming. Everything that society deems successful is rigged. Everything. Just be happy with what you have. Enjoy the simple life. Don't worship the idiots. Even if they have lots of money. They can't take it with them. Everything they have and everything they do is meaningless.

I believe the expression from the old days is this is simply a case of the pot calling the kettle black. You wrote and got paid by those you now skewer, roast and burn as being low-life miscreants of the worst kind. Sorry, but needing the money and "not doing it any more" does not change the fact what is did is pathetically wrong. There is no question that paying the way forward for those who are not qualified is wrong on all levels but again, you're just a deep in the poo-goo as they are for supporting them.

The writer would like to blame everyone else but herself. She has ZERO integrity. The writer says she couldn't turn the work away....duh.... YES she could have turned the work away. She should ask herself "who pooped in my pants"? Honesty, integrity, and a great character is not black or white, it is not rich or poor. You build it within yourself through honest hard work. When parents give everything to their children, they rob them of the joy one feels when you work hard and accomplish the thing you set out to do. Those parents who worked so hard and scraped to make a living.... hoping their children would not have to work as hard, fail at parenting when they don't teach their children that when you fall you pick yourself up and figure out how not to fall again. Every time we face a difficult time in our life it teaches us a valuable lesson. It is a joy to earn your own way in life. No one is joyful when someone else pays the way.... Not parents nor the government.

Am I the only one who sees this woman as a pimp? She's as much of a scumbag crook as the rich douchebags who paid her. She took blood $$$ to help the elite cheat. The only reason she wrote this piece is to cover her a*s when it comes out that she is part of the "scheme". Also stop grouping "white people" with these rich pieces of s**t. Being white has nothing to do with it. I'm white, grew up on the lower end of the middle class. I joined the army at 19 to help with college. Supported myself from the time I was 19 and couldn't afford to go to college until I was 33 years old.

Ron Unz wrote an expose in 2012 about the massive over representation of a certain group in Ivy League schools and how that over representation doesn't match SAT scores.

As long as there are people/schools willing to accept bribes this practice will continue. As long as there are people willing to write papers for money it will continue.

What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

F*****g raise your offspring right for Chrissakes!

Whatever! Not one alternative presented. No solutions. No 'Now that we know, how do we change or overcome it. I don't have any either, but I don't feel like one of the rabble going, "Hey... mumble, murmur, mumble... Down with them! ... rabble, murmur, mumble... The way it is sucks!... They did and still do it and always will...murmur, boo them! mumble..."

Since when does having done the wrong thing "years ago" make it okay? This writer betrayed her own morals and helped perpetuate a rigged system. Everyone needs to eat. Most of us manage to provide for ourselves without making our living helping other people cheat their way to the top.

This is very true. And this applies for international students as well. I have personally been contacted for writing essays for students applying to Universities in USA. Thankfully, I was in the position of saying no to such unethical work.

The writer seemed to acknowledge that what they did was foul, which is more than what many can put on the table. They’ve experienced growth.

The people who knowing take money to write papers or resumes for someone else are just as morally corrupt as those receiving the benefit of their hard work. Rather than "exposing" the system you are part of why not decline to participate?

Am I the only one who sees this woman as a pimp? She's as much of a scumbag crook as the rich douchebags who paid her. She took blood $$$ to help the elite cheat. The only reason she wrote this piece is to cover her a*s when it comes out that she is part of the "scheme". Also stop grouping "white people" with these rich pieces of s**t. Being white has nothing to do with it. I'm white, grew up on the lower end of the middle class. I joined the army at 19 to help with college. Supported myself from the time I was 19 and couldn't afford to go to college until I was 33 years old.

Sorry, this woman is among the worst of the worst. She couldn't afford to turn down the work? So said every prostitute and drug dealer. She could have done something else, but she chooses to revile those who paid her rent, rather than accepting responsibility. If her rude and cliched names and descriptions show her talent, then it's a wonder any of these students were accepted. Bad form, Bored Panda, for letting her air her dirty linen on your lines.

Sexist BS, "the richest of rich parents get HIM there..." not the truth, "the richest of rich parents get him OR HER there..." A little biased perhaps? Disingenuous coming from a sellout like yourself.

So? How about, we're dumping you because you're female and a man needs a spot in college to make enough money to support his family. You'll just get married, so you don't need a college education. Happened to me. Let's talk sexist, chum.

"the notion that anybody, regardless of wealth, race or social class, can make it to the top has become thoroughly discredited." Oh FFS. It's impossible, except for all the people that do it all the friggin time. If you stopped whining and put your nose to the grindstone you might make something of yourself instead of just being a whiny b***h. I hate when people have examples all around them that demonstrably discredit them but they refuse to pay attention. Have fun blaming other people for your problems, you pussy.
