“I Paid Extra To Have This Specific Seat”: Woman With Lupus Refuses To Hand Kid Her Window Seat

“I Paid Extra To Have This Specific Seat”: Woman With Lupus Refuses To Hand Kid Her Window Seat

Interview With Expert

Traveling, though exciting, can also be incredibly exhausting—especially when it involves flying. Between the mad dash to the airport, the hassle of getting through security, and hours crammed into a tight space with strangers, it’s a lot to deal with.

To make her journey more bearable, one woman with chronic pain decided to pay extra for a window seat on a long flight. But her peace was short-lived when a fellow passenger insisted she give up her spot so his 7-year-old son could enjoy the view.

When she refused, the situation spiraled into hours of complaints and nagging that left her questioning whether she’d made the right call.

Incidents involving rude passengers on flights are on the rise

There’s no shortage of entitled people anywhere, but they seem to be particularly common on airplanes. Whether it’s the stress of travel, unexpected delays, or the discomfort of being stuck in a small space 30,000 feet in the air, flying often brings out the worst in some passengers.

Unfortunately, this type of behavior appears to be on the rise. According to 2022 data from the International Air Transport Association, incidents involving unruly passengers increased by 47% globally compared to 2021, even as pandemic restrictions eased. However, some professionals believe these numbers might only scratch the surface.

“The public does not hear about the 99% of would-be incidents that are resolved by flight attendants without event,” said Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants, speaking to NBC News. “We deescalate conflict as aviation’s first responders on nearly every flight.”

Aviation security expert Jeffrey Price, founder of airport consultancy Leading Edge Strategies, suggested that post-pandemic attitudes might also play a role. “I’m not sure if there is an overall increase in a feeling of self-entitlement,” said Price, “or if people are, for some reason post-Covid, feeling more empowered to assert what authority or influence they believe they have.”

Here’s what annoys travelers most about fellow passengers

Rude passengers don’t just create headaches for airline staff—they can make the entire experience miserable for fellow travelers.

Earlier this year, YouGov surveyed Americans about the worst offenses in air travel etiquette. Unsurprisingly, more than 80% agreed that letting children run in the aisle, getting drunk, leaving their seats during turbulence, and watching movies or shows without headphones are unacceptable behaviors.

Other pet peeves include passengers leaving trash in the seatback pocket, hogging both armrests, eating strong-smelling food, and trying to exit the plane before the row in front of them.

Interestingly, some actions, like reclining seats, chatting with a seatmate, or asking to switch seats, were considered fine by at least half of respondents. Of course, those polled likely didn’t experience what the OP did—being pestered nonstop for an entire flight to swap seats.

Cabin crew do their best to accommodate needs, but options are often limited, says flight attendant

The cabin crew has limited options when passengers ask to move, though such requests are quite frequent, flight attendant Kyle Curmi told Bored Panda.

“Some passengers ask to change seats due to concerns like a crying infant nearby or an unpleasant odor from another passenger,” Curmi said. “Unfortunately, since most of our flights are fully booked, there’s not much we can do.”

“If there are available seats during the flight, we allow passengers to switch temporarily, provided they return to their original place for landing,” he added. “I’ve generally managed to accommodate everyone and ensure they sit comfortably.”

“Most travelers are understanding,” Curmi noted. “However, insisting that another passenger give up their seat or forcing them to move is not ethical at all.”

Commenters were fully on the woman’s side, agreeing that she had every right to keep her seat

Flight attendants are often terrible to people with hidden disabilities, even when you wear the sunflower lanyard, which is officially recognised as an indicator of invisible disabilities at airports and other places in (UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland and the UAE). Part of the issue is there's recourse if you face discrimination at the airport, but once you are in the air, it is much more complicated to take action, so the behaviour of the staff changes markedly, at least in UK, Ireland and US. I've gotten a lot of, you look fine. Or can you just... They ask you not to make a big deal about it, when it's something that could ruin you for a week, as if travelling with a disability isn't already incredibly difficult.

OP is just trying to be as functional as possible at her destination, just leave her alone. I have chronic pain and swelling that flares up at altitude/on flights. The best way to manage it is to stay as still as possible. Getting up and down to let people pass, or getting bumped by people walking down the tiny aisles really aggregate things. This woman did the right thing, dad and flight attendant are jerks.

I would have shamed them all by bringing up my medical condition and showing them the meds (there are a LOT of meds for lupus). he wasn't prepared to pay the extra for his kid to take her seat, so they need to sit down and STFU. I would also contact the airline if I had a medical condition and being shamed into giving up my chosen seat.

How is this even a question? It is obvious who carries the burden of guilt here and it is NOT the woman with Lupus. I also have Lupus and Fibromyalgia and a few other issues. To put it plain: I live in pain. I function, I enjoy days, I have a rewarding job and great friends. But I live in pain. It is part of my being. I also travel for my work. Whenever possible, I put my comfort above almost everything simply because if I am in great pain nothing gets done correctly. I pay extra for better seating. Thankfully, I've never encountered the "karen" seat traveler. The OP is merely trying to get through her day without being overwhelmed with pain. She is doing everything right: paying more for a better seat. Being (initially) polite about why she will not switch seats. The father with the kid is out of line. If he wanted his kid to see out the window, he could have purchased a window seat. End of argument.

The offer to switch seats if compensation is given is more than fair. When the father refused to reimburse th OP, she should have called him cheap and told the kid to ask why daddy won't pay for me to have a window seat. Let him keep screaming "Daddy, why are you so cheap? That certainly would change the dynamics.. If I hadn't paid extra, I could see letting the kid have it. But if I paid extra, I would demand to be paid back. The OP offer was more than fair. It's dad who's the problem here.

"Gimme Gimme Gimme - No! I'm not paying for it!" Hate people like this. If you want a windowed seat, BOOK ONE! Flight Attendants shouldn't try to coerce you to swap your paid-extra-for-booked seat for entitled shits who wouldn't book their own.

Sounds like a father brought his untrained "service animal" onboard and then proceeded to let him cause a ruckus when he wasn't able to swap seats to see out the window. Pay for what you want when you book, train your kid how to behave in public, or leave the kid at home. The rest of us adults do not have the time or energy to deal with your choice to have children and then not properly train them to behave in public

My mother would have "blistered our @sses" if we had pestered an adult on a flight. If your kid wants to look out the window, buy the window seat. That said, how many different iterations of this same song and dance are going to be posted. We've had just about all of them now with the window seat occupant ill with lupus.

If my kid was being annoying about wanting the window seat, I would’ve stopped that c**p immediately. But then again I wouldn’t have even asked to swap seats when I hadn’t planned accordingly.

So sick of these entitled people and parents. They could just as easily picked out and paid for a window seat for his son.

My mother would have "blistered our @sses" if we had pestered an adult on a flight. If your kid wants to look out the window, buy the window seat. That said, how many different iterations of this same song and dance are going to be posted. We've had just about all of them now with the window seat occupant ill with lupus.

Tell the father "If the kid keeps harassing me, I'll tell him the truth about Santa Claus."

No honey, Daddy is mean for not buying you a window seat when he bought your ticket. He could have asked for one, but he didn't. Daddy is a mean mean badman. (Now Daddy has to deal with the spoiled tantrum thrower.)

F**k that. People who "keep the peace" is what perpetuates this. Here's how that should go "Excuse me..." "No."

There's more than one window seat on the plane. You needed yours. He might have been able to switch with someone else, and the flight attendant could have helped with this if it was such a big deal. NTA, he acted rude and entitled

She paid extra for her seat because of medical reasons which she doesn't need tell anybody about. She told the man no, she told the kid no who kept bugging her. Daddy didn't do his job and put a stop to that then the FA bugs her about it and the kid is crying and screaming about it. It was time for Daddy to take him to the bathroom for a conversation!

I'm unconvinced this has anything to do with covid. It is however symptomatic of inconsiderate entitled fools. I bet if the OP were male this scenario would not have arisen. As for the flight attendant she needs retraining asap.

Lupus should have f**k all to do with it. If someone with an assigned seat doesn't want to switch, then no explanation is owed or necessary.
