“Ignored All My Calls And Texts”: Neighbors Move Out, Leaving Their Dog Behind, Now Want Him Back

Interview With Expert

There are few things more heartbreaking than seeing an animal abandoned by its owners. And yet, it still happens more often than we’d like to think.

The family in this Reddit story left their dog tied up in the backyard with just a little food and water before moving away without saying a word. Thankfully, a compassionate neighbor stepped in, rescued the pet, and gave it a loving home. But now, six months later, the original owners have returned, accusing the neighbor of theft and demanding the dog back.

Abandoned animals are often prone to developing trust issues and separation anxiety

As troubling as this story is, it’s just one example in a growing global trend of animal abandonment. In October 2023, the RSPCA reported 1,800 abandoned pets in England and Wales in just one month—an alarming 48% increase compared to October 2020. In the U.S., the problem is just as concerning, with 250,000 more animals entering shelters in 2023 than the year before, according to Shelter Animals Count, which gathers data from nearly 7,000 shelters nationwide.

It goes without saying that abandoning an animal can leave it in a state of great distress. To get a clearer picture of the emotional toll this takes on dogs, Bored Panda reached out to clinical canine behaviorist and nutritionist Alyssa Ralph and clinical animal behaviorist James Carroll.

“Just as people do, dogs form strong emotional attachments—especially to their caregivers,” explains Ralph. “When a dog is abandoned, this attachment may be heavily impacted and many dogs struggle to process the emotions this can trigger, an effect which can last a long time.”

“In these scenarios, a dog may grieve for their owner or be confused about what’s happening,” she adds. “They may also feel heightened anxiety and become generally more stressed. As a result, they may behave more fearfully, they may become aggressive, they may lose trust in people and struggle to form secure relationships with them, and they may even appear depressed.”

This stress can manifest in many different ways, often triggered by the most mundane circumstances. “Dogs that have been abandoned are much more likely to develop separation-related issues,” says Carroll. “And if their original owners left them, regardless of the reason, they can have significant trust issues. Even a new owner leaving for a short trip to the shops could trigger a trauma response, with the dog fearing they might not return either.”

How to take care of an abandoned dog? Be patient, understanding, and create a safe environment for them to heal

With so many pets being left in shelters or on the streets, you might one day find yourself adopting or rescuing an abandoned dog. If you do, it’s important to remember that they need time to adjust to their new life, so be patient and let the dog set the pace.

“Recognize their needs—such as for food, water, and a feeling of safety—and consistently make sure those needs are being met,” advises Ralph. “It also really helps to learn about dog body language and communication so you can recognize when they’re struggling with a situation and support them through it.”

“For example, a dog who has been previously abandoned may struggle with physical contact, and so may start licking their lips, showing the whites of their eyes, or even stiffening their body when someone approaches them. These would all be signals that this dog isn’t comfortable, and you can use this information to change your behavior and help them to feel more safe,” she says. “Over time, many dogs will respond positively to this and start to trust you more and more.”

Since abandoned dogs often fear being left alone again, spending extra time with them can make a big difference. “Try not to leave them alone until they’re settled in their new house,” Carroll suggests. “When they’re ready, start with short absences, see how they handle it, and gradually extend the time based on their response.”

Do owners deserve a second chance with the pets they’ve abandoned?

While it might be tempting to give a definitive “no” as an answer, the reality is more complex. “It’s in the dog’s best interest to live with whoever can provide the best life for them,” says Carroll. He offers an example from his practice, recalling a time when he recognized a dog he had worked with in a missing ad just a few weeks later.

“I reached out to the new owner, who immediately became defensive and didn’t want me to contact the original owner. But I was faced with an ethical dilemma—I felt obligated to inform the original owner that their dog was alive and well,” Carroll shares.

“There was a company called DogLost advertising the missing dog, so I had to anonymously reach out to them and ask them to notify the original owner. But since the new owner was now the legal owner (which had to be established), there was nothing more I could do, and I still think about this years later.”

“In my particular case, the new owner was leaving the dog alone for up to 12 hours a day and, unfortunately, didn’t consider that the dog might have had a better life with the original owner,” Carroll says.

As for the Reddit scenario, he recommends that both the original and new owners meet without the dog to discuss things openly. Each side should explain what they can offer for the dog’s well-being and long-term care. With the help of an intermediary, they can then work together to decide what’s truly best for the dog.

“Every dog and every situation is different, so you should always consider the individual circumstances and what may be best for the dog,” adds Ralph. “Things such as emotional connection to the people involved should be considered, alongside aspects such as how well each caregiver can provide for the dog and meet their needs long-term.”

Most commenters were eager to support the woman and were relieved that the dog was now in good hands

However, one user felt she was at fault for not reporting it to animal control right away

While NTA in any way, form or shape, OP should have reported the issue to the police or animal control and told them the dog is abandoned and they volunteer to take him in. It would have been proof that the former neighbours relinquished ownership of the dog and cover OP's behind.

Yes, but sometimes animal control will take the abandoned dog, and put it in a shelter. When the owner can't be found, they don't offer them back to the rescuer, they'll put him up for open adoption. It's so sad. Sometimes they're put down before they're given a chance of being adopted.

Here’s your script to Mark and Julie and their supporters “You abandoned the dog without sufficient food and water to die. Since you were long gone, it wasn’t worth the trouble to report you to Animal Control and the police for animal cruelty. Now that you are back, and want the opportunity to abuse Buddy again, I think it’s best that I file a report.or we could never see you again. Your choice.”

OP was a wonderful human being who did the right thing. The neighbors are lower than something you would step in on the sidewalk. It would be concerning to contact your local authorities and then find out that legally the original owners are in the right and you'd still have to give the dog up. More than likely the neighbors will adopt another dog because it's so inexpensive to get one ( if you don't plan on caring for them properly.) sadly, the neighbors will treat the next dog as expendable. I wouldn't even leave a house plant alone and unattended if I had to "leave town quickly for personal matters". I hope OP had the forethought to take out a phone and record what she saw when she rescued the dog. Document everything people. Always take photos and videos that shows when something is wrong, you might need them later. I hope op and Buddy have a wonderful life together and that the neighbors never own another pet again.

What neighborhood does OP live in where anything that Mark and Julie say would matter? I don't know about y'all, but I barely know the neighbors on either side of me, let alone the whole neighborhood, and if this is a tight-knit neighborhood then everyone would already know that Mark and Julie abandoned the dog for six months, so nobody would be backing them. The story is believable up to the point that OP is claiming her reputation is being besmirched...

If the neighbors really thought it was theft, they would talk to the police and not the neighbors. I'm surprised the neighbors did not accuse the OP of being selfish because that seems to be the word of the decade, but usually used by the entitled when they're making unreasonable demands instead of simple requests

Let mark and Julie know that if they come down to the sunshine state and pull that c**p, Florida’s finest will find them and throw them in jail, don’t leave them in a hot car either, they will break out every window in your car to get the animal out, and be waiting for you when you come back to the car.

Nearly the same situation with my 3 newest pups. The owners are truck drivers and left these pups with a neighbor that didn't agree to keep them. No food or water. Covered in ticks. My dog Maxx ended up bringing one home. We called and asked about the pup and we're told by the neighbor "take them or I'll shoot them". That's when we realized there were 3 pups like this!! We bring them all home and care for them for 4 months vet visits and all. The "owners" come back and demand the pups. Uh no. You abandoned them to die. Get bent dude. Police called and they sided with us. Pups are living it up now! Just in case you're wondering, their names are Abby, Duke, and Karl. And before anyone jumps me about animal control, when we called they said we were outside their area and weren't to be bothered. So yeah, NTA

This happened to me years ago! But they wanted her back after less than a week. We couldn't prove they had abandoned her so I had to give her back. They took her miles away and poisoned her! But she knew what to do to save herself and late at night I heard a scratch at the door. I nursed her until we could get her into an emergency vet, promising that if she did not die in front of me I would give her a great life. $2600 later I was NOT giving her back this time. Because of her breed the most I could hope for if I reported was that they would euthanize the dog so we just got nasty ourselves. Yes, we intentionally menaced and intimidated the neighbors and kept their dog. I had that dog for over a decade and she passed away loved and treasured.

I would have told them to call the cops! If they are stupid enough to do so and a police officer hears that they left the dog six months ago chained up in the back yard while they were "sorting themselves out" They'd end up getting arrested for animal cruelty and still won't get the dog back.

One of my senior rescue was abandoned in the basement by his previous "family", and there's still an ongoing criminal investigation for animal cruelty against these AH. I hope they'll serve time or get a hefty fine. But the dog is safe and has been living happily with us, his forever family and home.

Agree. None of this makes sense. They abandon a dog in a yard. They would have no idea if he was even alive after six months. Yet, they return to the old neighborhood and go straight to OP, somehow knowing OP had the dog? They couldn't possibly have expected the dog to be happy and healthy, still tied up where they left him six months ago. Also, wouldn't they expect all their neighbors to know they had abandoned the dog? Yet, they still went back? This didn't happen.

A stray hold in a shelter is usually 48, 72hrs, or at most seven days. Owners should have responded to the calls within that time frame. She should have called authorities. But at this point, ownership of the dog goes to her. Although I am not a legal authority, just volunteered a lot in rescue.

The courts won't care who raised him. They'll care who has a current medical record, who got him vaccinated. They'll also care a LOT about a dog being chained up and abandoned for 6 months. OP should be sure to have good locks, never leave the dog out unsupervised, and perhaps put up a security camera.

NTA although for legal reasons and from a documentation stand point I would have contacted the police. You are doing the right thing if he were to go back I would be afraid they were going to abandon this sweet should again. They live in a hotel that s not a life for a dog. She did the right thing not reporting to animal control. They could have put the dog down.

A stray hold in a shelter is usually 48, 72hrs, or at most seven days. Owners should have responded to the calls within that time frame. She should have called authorities. But at this point, ownership of the dog goes to her. Although I am not a legal authority, just volunteered a lot in rescue.

The lesson I learn from this is that if this ever happens to me, the last message I should send the dirt bags is "Your dog died of starvation and neglect."

How is this even a real question or story? If you have to ask if you are the AH in this situation then you are just for asking. Most likely it's simply someone looking for attention by virtue signaling.

The courts won't care who raised him. They'll care who has a current medical record, who got him vaccinated. They'll also care a LOT about a dog being chained up and abandoned for 6 months. OP should be sure to have good locks, never leave the dog out unsupervised, and perhaps put up a security camera.

OP is NTA except for 2 things: Not reporting the issue to animal control or the police and also for not contacting John Wick the moment MnJ decided to just barge back in and demand Buddy back. People, SMH!!!

You’re NTA, you’re a hero!! Property is considered abandoned after 30 days and you now have vet records showing buddy is your dog. 🐶

Why did she even acknowledge she had the dog? "Sorry sir, I called animal control the day after you left him and you need to go speak to them."

OP would have had to be walking him, so probably another neighbour who was on better terms with the couple who left Buddy told them.

Do you really believe a couple that careless of their dog's welfare bothered to pay for microchipping?

NTA although for legal reasons and from a documentation stand point I would have contacted the police. You are doing the right thing if he were to go back I would be afraid they were going to abandon this sweet should again. They live in a hotel that s not a life for a dog. Its not even really a life for a human .
