Plus-Size Woman Quits Job After Being Told To ‘Cover Her Stomach’ Despite All Of Her Petite Coworkers Wearing Similar Clothes

It might be unclear how casual you’re allowed to dress, so the safest way to choose your outfits is to base them off what your co-workers are wearing. If sneakers and jeans are the unspoken uniform of the office, you might as well follow suit, at least in the beginning. And if everyone else is wearing a crop top that reveals their stomach, it is safe to assume that you can wear that too. Unless, of course, your manager has a ridiculous double standard for plus size people.
One woman, Abigayle Canterbury, recently shared on TikTok that she quit her new job after dealing with a fatphobic manager. Her videos have sparked a conversation online about discrimination in the workplace, so below, you can read her whole explanation, as well as an interview between Abigayle and Bored Panda and some of the replies her videos have received. It’s no secret that being thin is valued in society, as the media has always shown a blatant preference for smaller bodies. But it’s disheartening to know that even in the workplace, having a larger body can lead to discrimination. In fact, one study published in Science Direct even found that 45% of employers were less likely to recruit obese candidates. This same study also found that “obese people are less likely to be regarded as able leaders and had lower starting salaries”. Why do we allow arbitrary factors like the size of our bodies determine what jobs we qualify for? Weight has absolutely no impact on someone’s intelligence, capability and leadership qualities, yet employers maintain prejudices to the detriment of plus size workers.

We reached out to Abigayle on Instagram to hear whether or not any of her co-workers ever acknowledged that she had been treated poorly. Apparently, they were not too concerned, as all they told Abigayle was, “That’s so crazy.” We also asked what the most important thing she’ll look for in her next job is. “Fairness first of all,” Abigayle said. “And either a strict dress code or a dress code with no double standards.”
We then asked if she thinks fatphobia is common in the workplace. “[It is] definitely a very prominent thing in the workplace,” Abigayle says. “It happens so much, and until we start talking about it, nothing will change.” To anyone else who has dealt with similar discrimination, Abigayle says, “Don’t ever settle for a job that can’t give you basic respect. They need employees to run their business, and if they can’t give basic respect to them, why would they hire them in the first place?”

Lastly, Abigayle added, “I really want to thank every single journalist that took the time to listen to what I had to say. Until we start talking about these social issues, they’re never going to be taken seriously. Nobody deserves to feel bad about THEIR body.”
It is important to bring this issue to light to minimize the power of fatphobia. In the United States, Michigan is the only state out of 50, as well as a handful of cities around the nation, that has outlawed discrimination based on weight. Anywhere else in the country, employees can still be fired for being fat. There are activists fighting to increase civil rights protections for overweight individuals, but it’s unfortunately been a slow process. “My body is not a failure, nor does it need to be fixed,” says Janet Conroy-Quirk, an advocate for a bill in Massachusetts that would make weight-based discrimination illegal in the state. “The systemic flaws and fatphobic mentality that allow weight discrimination are the problem.”
Abigayle should have never been made to feel uncomfortable about her body, but I’m glad that she can now find a more positive environment to work in. By starting this conversation, she has taken a small step towards ending fatphobia in the workplace, and hopefully soon enough, no one will have to deal with it. Unless the girls she spoke to were affecting sarcasm, there's nothing in their words to suggest they were full of BS. Its possible they were being genuinely empathetic, especially the one who was "sort of dress coded once". How they treated OP during the rest of her time there should also be taken into consideration. I'm not saying she is wrong for feeling hurt, hell no, she's been treated terribly *by her boss*. It just feels a little projection-y to say the entire company was full of BS based only on what has been presented in the text here.

Load More Replies...If the business genuinely doesn’t have a dress code rather than one that isn’t strictly enforced (most businesses in my experience have loads of stuff buried in handbooks etc) then it would seem fair enough. However I would say a crop top may not be appropriate for an office environment but it really depends. I work in an office setting and we’re the scruffiest bunch ever but the line would certainly be drawn with crop tops as well as football tops etc. The key is the business should be consistent - I only skimmed but didn’t see here say others were wearing crop tops.

I have always been a bigger person and found that some outfits just don't suit all body shapes e.g leggings and a strap top can look nice on some girls but it just makes me look really trashy and I'd never even think about going out to work wearing anything like that although most of my colleagues do. I have to try harder to look presentable which is probably the same for this lady. Her manager should have been more professional about the way he/she approached the situation so this woman definitely has a right to be angry, but I do understand why an outfit like that would look appropriate on a smaller individual but not necessarily for this woman in particular. As I said I'm actually bigger than this woman so I'm not body shaming her, but sometimes being bigger does mean you have to try harder to look presentable and wearing tie dye jeans with a crop top just isn't appropriate for most workplaces

It looks like she was trying to start a fight and making it all about weight when it was really about the ridiculous outfit that no one should be wearing anyway, because hello - ugly!
While I feel sorry for the lady that posted the article (and honestly have zero issues with how she was dressed), I can honestly state I wish more places would enforce their dress code EVENLY... Can't tell you how many times I've gone into a bank and the female tellers are occasionally dressed as if they are at the bar after work, and the male tellers are wearing dress slacks, dress shirt, tie, and vest.
I've seen just the opposite- women wearing professional and or modest clothing while men walk around in shorts and TShirts and backwards hats. Dude, nobody in the office wNts to see your nasty hairy legs.

Just for the record, the opposite of plus-size is not petite. Petite are individuals under 160 cm or 5ft2. Petite individuals can also be plus-size. Plus-size is concerned with weight, petite with height. It is important to use these terms appropriately. There are many clothing items labeled petite to stroke the egos of thin, average height individuals, but that do not fit real petite frames as they are too long. Us petite women have a very hard time finding clothes that fit.
This outfit is not appropriate for work. For nobody, no matter their body type. It should be explained in the contract/ appendix.

I'm a fat girl... bigger than her... and I can sometimes understand there are certain things I don't think are appropriate for my size in relation to the type of job I have. I'm not going to wear daisy dukes and a bralette at my bank job because that's not appropriate and no one wants to see that. There are some common sense limitations to what that means in relation to how I dress at work. For instance not having a dress code doesn't mean you can show up in underwear. But if the thin girls wore this same outfit would they be penalized, too? That's where you get into discrimination territory. I'm curious as to the 'nicer clothes' comment more than even the fat issue. Is this some upscale clothing store? It sounds to me like the 'boss' was uncomfortable with her weight showing or that her clothes were not 'cool' enough and wanted to comment via her supervisor. Made him/her do the dirty work.

They probably don't. They just didn't like one outfit. And in my opinion that outfit is very unflattering. It is not a proper crop and the pants are too tight and not high enough to pull the crop top look. Not to mention the colors. It's just not at all ok. Would have flopped even in a skinny woman, IMO

We have a news anchor here who is slightly overweight, but she wears totally skin tight clothing that I have never seen on any slimmer anchors. When someone's navel is visible under their clothing, it's too tight. None of the other men or women wear anything like this.
If there’s no documented dress code you’ve signed up to the business can’t enforce one. Surely the business has discriminated against this person and essentially forced them to resign through discrimination?
